  1. 1
What is claimed is:1. A communication system comprising: a first backhaul node and a second backhaul node;and a plurality of sites that each comprise a respective seed node configured to: maintain a first communication link with the first backhaul node and a second communication link with the second backhaul node;operate in a first mode in which the respective seed node engages in communication with the first backhaul node over the first communication link and does not engage in communication with the second backhaul node over the second communication link;detect a triggering event associated with the first communication link;and in response to detecting the triggering event, dynamically switch from operating in the first mode to operating in a second mode in which the respective seed node engages in communication with the second backhaul node over the second communication link and does not engage in communication with the first backhaul node over the first communication link.
  2. 12
A communication node comprising:flexible millimeter wave radio equipment configured to establish multiple point-to-point or point-to-multipoint communication links, the flexible millimeter wave radio equipment comprising: a point-to-point radio module configured to establish point-to-point communication links;a point-to-multipoint radio module configured to establish point-to-multipoint communication links;and a digital module communicatively coupled to the point-to-point radio module and the point-to-multipoint radio module.
  3. 20
A communication node comprising:flexible millimeter wave radio equipment configured to establish multiple point-to-point or point-to-multipoint communication links, the flexible millimeter wave radio equipment comprising: a point-to-point radio module configured to establish point-to-point communication links;a point-to-multipoint radio module configured to establish point-to-multipoint communication links;and a digital module communicatively coupled to the point-to-point radio module and the point-to-multipoint radio module, wherein the digital module is configured provide switching operations for the communication node to operate in a first mode in which the communication node engages in communication with a first backhaul node or a second mode in which the communication node engages in communication with a second backhaul node;and wherein the communication node is configured to: maintain a first communication link with the first backhaul node and a second communication link with the second backhaul node;operate in a first mode in which the communication node engages in communication with the first backhaul node over the first communication link and does not engage in communication with the second backhaul node over the second communication link;detect a triggering event associated with the first communication link;and in response to detecting the triggering event, dynamically switch from operating in the first mode to operating in a second mode in which the communication node engages in communication with the second backhaul node over the second communication link and does not engage in communication with the first backhaul node over the first communication link.
  4. 21
A communication system comprising:a first layer of a mesh network comprising a first set of nodes that are configured to establish both ultra-high-capacity communication links and non-ultra-high-capacity communication links;and a second layer of the mesh network comprising a second set of nodes that are configured to establish non-ultra-high-capacity communication links but not ultra-high-capacity communication links, wherein each node in the first set of nodes is communicatively coupled to (1) at least one other node in the first set of nodes via a respective ultra-high-capacity communication link and (2) at least one node in the second set of nodes via a respective non-ultra-high-capacity communication link, and wherein each node in the second set of nodes is communicatively coupled to at least one other node in the second set of non-ultra-high-capacity nodes via a respective non-ultra-highcapacity communication link.
  5. 31
A communication system comprising:a first layer of a mesh network comprising a first set of nodes that are configured to establish both ultra-high-capacity communication links and a first type of non-ultra-highcapacity communication links;a second layer of the mesh network comprising a second set of nodes that are configured to establish the first type of non-ultra-high-capacity communication links but not ultra-highcapacity communication links;and a third layer of the mesh network comprising a third set of nodes that are configured to establish a second type of non-ultra-high-capacity communication links but not ultra-highcapacity communication links or the first type of non-ultra-high-capacity communication links, wherein each node in the first set of nodes is communicatively coupled to (1) at least one other node in the first set of nodes via a respective ultra-high-capacity communication link and (2) at least one node in the second set of nodes via a respective first type of non-ultra-highcapacity communication link, wherein each node in the second set of nodes is communicatively coupled to at least one other node in the second set of non-ultra-high-capacity nodes via a respective first type of nonultra-high-capacity communication link, and wherein each node in the third set of nodes is communicatively coupled to the second layer of the mesh network via one or more of the second type of non-ultra-high-capacity communication links and zero or more other nodes in the third set of nodes.
  6. 37
A method carried out by a computing system, the method comprising:deploying a first layer of a mesh network comprising a first set of nodes that are configured to establish both ultra-high-capacity communication links and non-ultra-highcapacity communication links;and deploying a second layer of the mesh network comprising a second set of nodes that are configured to establish non-ultra-high-capacity communication links but not ultra-high-capacity communication links, wherein each node in the first set of nodes is communicatively coupled to (1) at least one other node in the first set of nodes via a respective ultra-high-capacity communication link and (2) at least one node in the second set of nodes via a respective non-ultra-high-capacity communication link, and wherein each node in the second set of nodes is communicatively coupled to at least one other node in the second set of non-ultra-high-capacity nodes via a respective non-ultra-highcapacity communication link.
