  1. 1
WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:1. A stopper for a medicament delivery device, the stopper comprising: a base for sealing an opening of the device, the base having a central axis;one or more elongated members extending away from the base in a direction parallel to the axis, the one or more elongated members set radially away from the axis and defining: a portion of a central well coaxial with the axis, the central well tapering continuously toward the base, a septum extending continuously, transverse the axis, between the base and a floor of the well;and, between circumferentially adjacent portions of the one or more elongated members, a void partitioned from the central well, the void extending farther than the well toward the base;wherein: in a first operational configuration, the one or more elongated members engage an inner wall of the device to support the base away from the opening such that the void provides exchange of gas between an interior and an exterior of the device;and, in a second operational configuration, the base engages the inner wall to seal the opening.
  2. 5
A method of lyophilizing and sealing a medicament within a medical delivery device, the method comprising:placing the medicament into the delivery device;engaging an inner wall of the delivery device with one or more resilient elongated members that are fixed to a sealing base that defines a central axis, the one or more elongated members set radially away from the axis and extending away from the base in a direction parallel to the axis, circumferentially adjacent portions of the one or more elongated members defining therebetween: a portion of a surface of a webbing of a central well tapering continuously toward the base 02456036\153-01 249694/4 coaxially to the axis, a septum extending continuously, transverse the axis, between the base and a floor of the well;and, exterior the central well, a void partitioned from the central well by the webbing, the void extending farther than the well toward the base;advancing the one or more elongated members into the device until the base is set apart from the inner wall by a predetermined offset, the base held in place relative to the device only by the one or more elongated members;lyophilizing the medicament to produce a vapor that escapes via the void, between the inner wall, the adjacent surfaces of the one or more elongated members defining the void and the base;and, then, further advancing the one or more elongated members until the base seals against the inner wall.
  3. 9
The stopper of any one of claims 1 to 4 further comprising a flange orthogonal to the axis.
  4. 12
The stopper of any one of claims 1 to 4 further comprising a resilient material.
  5. 16
The stopper of any one of claims 1 to 4 wherein the base comprises a peripheral ridge configured to sealingly engage the inner wall of the device.
  6. 17
The stopper of any one of claims 1 to 4 wherein, in the first operational configuration, the gas comprises a lyophilization byproduct.
  7. 19
The stopper of any one of claims 1 to 4 wherein the central well tapers to a curved floor.
  8. 22
The method of any one of claims 5 to 8 wherein the one or more resilient elongated members bear a lubricious coating.
  9. 23
The method of any one of claims 5 to 8 wherein the base comprises a peripheral ridge configured to sealingly engage the inner wall of the device .
  10. 24
The method of any one of claims 5 to 8 wherein, when the base seals against the inner wall, a 02456036\153-01 249694/4 flange of the base remains exterior to the device and abuts a terminal surface of the inner wall .
  11. 25
The method of any one of claims 5 to 8 wherein, when the base seals against the inner wall, the base seals a lyophilized product within the device between the base and a plunger that is sealingly engaged with the inner wall.
  12. 26
The method of any one of claims 5 to 8 wherein the septum is:a sealing septum of resilient material;and configured to be penetrable by, and self-sealing around an outer wall of, a needle configured for fluid communication through the base between an interior and an exterior of the device.
