  1. 1
CLAIMS 1. A parallel plate actuator apparatus comprising:an actuator array comprising a plurality of two-sided actuators elements (110) arranged in rows and columns, the two sided actuators elements including: • a moving element (120) mechanically connected to stationary portions of the actuator element by means of a bearing (150), the bearing (150) defining an axis (125) along which the moving element (120) can travel, preventing the moving element (120) from travelling in other directions and defining an at-rest position of the moving element (120);• a pair of electrodes (130, 140) disposed on opposite sides of the moving element (120) so that application of a voltage between the moving element and either electrode can generate a force driving said moving element away from its at-rest position and towards the respective electrode;electrical connections, the electrical connections between the two-sided actuator elements being such that: • the moving elements (120) are electrically connected along one of the rows or the columns of the array;• a first set of electrodes (130) are electrically connected along a first set of the other of the rows or the columns (410) of the array;and • a second set of electrodes (140) are electrically connected along a second set of the other of the rows or the columns (420) of the array;a controller (50) operative to receive a digital input signal and operatively associated with the actuator array so that voltage can be applied between any selected row and column thereby enabling control Signed by: MmistryOfJustice Reason: of the actuator elements within the actuator array for generating a Date Time: 24 May 2016 10:00:25 sound at least one attribute of which corresponds to at least one characteristic SPSjgTI digital input signal sampled periodically in accordance with a sampling clock. 32
  2. 4
The apparatus according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the actuator elements further comprise dimples (210, 220) formed on the surfaces of the electrodes (130, 140) facing the moving element (120).
  3. 5
The apparatus according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the controller (50) is operative to determine that motion of a i,j'th element, comprising the j'th element in the i'th row is mandated in order to generate the sound and to cause motion of the i,j'th moving element by changing the voltage difference between the j'th column and said i'th row.
  4. 8
The apparatus according to any of claims 5-7, further comprising a position sensor sensing the position of said i,j'th moving element along said axis.
  5. 10
The apparatus according to any of claims 5-9, wherein said voltage is applied for a predetermined period of time after which at least one of the i'th row and j'th column are disconnected from said voltage source. 33
  6. 14
An actuator apparatus comprising:a plurality of actuator arrays, each actuator array comprising o a plurality of two-sided actuators elements arranged in rows and columns, the two sided actuators elements including: a moving element (120), a pair of electrodes (130, 140) disposed on opposite sides of the moving element (120) so that application of a voltage between the moving element and either electrode can generate a force driving said moving element away from its at-rest position and towards the respective electrode;o electrical connections, the electrical connections between the twosided actuator elements being such that at least: a first set of electrodes (130) are electrically connected along the rows of the actuator array;and a second set of electrodes (140) are electrically connected along the columns of the actuator array;a controller (50) operative to receive a digital input signal and operatively associated with said plurality of actuator arrays so that voltage can be applied between any selected row and column of any actuator array of said plurality of actuator arrays, thereby enabling control of the actuator elements within said plurality of actuator arrays for generating a sound at least one attribute of which corresponds to at 34 least one characteristic of the digital input signal sampled periodically in accordance with a sampling clock. 14. The actuator apparatus of claim 13, wherein the controller is a single controller.
  7. 15
The actuator apparatus of any of claims 13 or 14, wherein the controller controls, for each actuator array of said plurality of actuator arrays:- each row of said actuator array through one electrical connection connecting said controller to said row, - each column of said actuator array through one other electrical connection connecting said controller to said column.
  8. 17
The actuator apparatus of any of claims 13 or 14, wherein:- for at least a first subset of the actuator arrays of said plurality of actuator arrays, each row of each actuator array belonging to said first subset is electrically connected to a row of the other actuator arrays belonging to said first subset to form a unified row, the controller being connected to each unified row of said first subset through one electrical connection, and/ or - for at least a second subset of the actuator arrays of said plurality of actuator arrays, each column of each actuator array belonging to said second subset is electrically connected to a column of the other actuator arrays belonging to said second subset to form a unified column, the controller being connected to each unified column of said second subset through one electrical connection. 35
  9. 18
The actuator apparatus of any of claims 14 to 17, wherein the plurality of actuator arrays comprises active arrays. 36
