  1. 1
229619/2 Claims:1. A composition having antimicrobial activity comprising: particles comprising copper halide having an average particle size of less than or equal to 1000 nm and a solubility of less than or equal to 100 mg/liter in water, wherein the surfaces of said particles are modified by at least one functionalizing agent.
  2. 8
A composition having antimicrobial activity comprising:a. a metal halide selected from the group consisting of copper halide and silver halide;and 97 229619/2 b. non-zeolitic porous carrier particles supporting said metal halide within pores of said carrier particles, wherein average pore size of said carrier particles is greater than 2 nm to permit said metal halide to deposit in the said pores.
  3. 9
The composition as in any one of claims lor 8, further comprising an agent selected from an antibiotic and an antimicrobial agent.
  4. 10
A liquid comprising the composition of any one of claims 1, 3, 4, or 8.
  5. 12
An article of manufacture comprising the composition of any one of claims 1 or 8.
  6. 13
A coating comprising the composition of any one of claims 1 or 8.
  7. 14
A process for making a polymeric antimicrobial product containing copper iodide wherein the said product is made by first preparing a polymeric masterbatch with a higher concentration of copper iodide, and reducing the concentration of the said copper iodide in the final product by incorporating a portion of the said masterbatch.
