  1. 1
45 CLAIMS 1. A method of electromagnetic heating comprising:(a) placing an object to be heated in a cavity (10);(b) feeding input UHF or microwave energy at a controlled input power into the cavity via a plurality (16,18,20) of antennas, and measuring the input power;(c) automatically changing the transmitted frequency and determining corresponding reflected powers;and (d) heating the object by feeding input UHF or microwave energy at a controlled heating input power;the method being characterised by: (e) for each antenna in the plurality of antennas, and for each frequency: (i) measuring a reflected power at the said antenna;(ii) measuring a coupled power (Sij) between the said antenna and the other antenna or antennas;(iii) determining an energy absorption efficiency (η) as a portion of the input power that is not output from the cavity as coupled or reflected power;and (f) during heating, automatically adjusting the heating input power to the said antenna, for each frequency, in dependence upon the energy absorption efficiency for that frequency.
  2. 4
A method according to any of claims 1 to 3 including adjusting the heating input power such that the product of the energy absorption efficiency (η) and the heating input power is substantially constant over a plurality of frequencies. 46
  3. 6
A method according to any one of the preceding claims including adjusting a field adjusting element (24) in the cavity (10).
  4. 8
A method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein different antennas transmit differing frequencies at differing input powers.
  5. 9
Apparatus for electromagnetic heating comprising:a cavity (10);means for feeding input UHF or microwave energy at a controlled input power into the cavity via a plurality (16,18,20) of antennas, and measuring the input power;means for automatically changing the transmitted frequency and determining corresponding reflected powers;and means for heating the object by feeding input UHF or microwave energy at a controlled heating input power;the apparatus being characterised by: for each antenna in the plurality of antennas, and for each frequency: (i) means for measuring a reflected power (Su) at the said antenna;(ii) means for measuring a coupled power (Sij) between the said antenna and the other antenna or antennas;(iii) means for determining an energy absorption efficiency (η) as a portion of the input power that is not output from the cavity as coupled or reflected power;and means for automatically adjusting the heating input power to the said antenna, during hearing, for each frequency, in dependence upon the energy absorption efficiency for that frequency.
