  1. 1
Claims 1. Apparatus comprising a measurement system for performing non-invasive measurements on a subject's body, the system comprising:a measurement unit comprising: an acoustic unit configured to direct acoustic radiation toward a region of interest within the subject's body;and an optical unit comprising: an illumination assembly that comprises at least one light emitter, and at least one first and at least one second light guiding unit, the light emitter and the first and second light guiding units being optically coupled to each other via a first optical coupler;and a light detection assembly that comprises at least one light detector, the at least one second light guiding unit, and at least one third light guiding unit, the light detector, the second light guiding unit, and the third light guiding unit being optically coupled to each other via a second optical coupler, the measurement unit being configured to provide a first operating condition such that: the acoustic unit directs acoustic radiation toward a region of interest within the subject's body, at a single operating condition, a first light portion is transmitted from the light emitter to the light detector, by being transmitted along the second light guiding unit, from the first optical coupler to the second optical coupler, without passing through tissue of the subject, and a second light portion is transmitted from the light emitter to the light detector, by being transmitted from the first light guiding unit to the third light guiding unit via the region of interest within the subject's body, such that scattered light of the first light portion that passes into the third light guiding unit contains a tagged component corresponding to photons tagged by the acoustic radiation, and an untagged component corresponding to photons untagged by the acoustic radiation, and 56 a control unit configured to determine a property of tissue of the region of interest, by decoupling from each other the tagged and untagged components of the second light portion received at the light detector, based upon an interaction between light of the first light portion and light of the second light portion received at the light detector, the property of the tissue of the region of interest being determined without the operating condition of the acoustic radiation being varied during operation of the acoustic unit.
  2. 13
A method for performing non-invasive measurements on a subject's body, the method comprising:directing acoustic radiation toward a region of interest within the subject's body, at a single operating condition;transmitting light from a light emitter to a light detector under a first operating condition, such that: a first light portion is transmitted from the light emitter to the light detector without passing through tissue of the subject, a second light portion is transmitted from the light emitter to the light detector via the region of interest within the subject's body, such that scattered light of the second light portion that is received at the light detector contains a 59 tagged component corresponding to photons tagged by the acoustic radiation, and an untagged component corresponding to photons untagged by the acoustic radiation, transmitted light of the first light portion is optically coupled to transmitted 5 light of the second light portion, and light of the first light portion undergoes an interaction with received light of the second light portion at the light detector, by received light of the first and second light portions being optically coupled to each other;detecting the light received at the light detector;and 10 determining a property of tissue of the region of interest, by decoupling from each other the tagged and untagged components of the second light portion received at the light detector, based upon the interaction between the received light of the first portion and the received light of the second light portion, the property of the tissue of the region of interest being determined without the operating condition of the acoustic radiation 15 being varied while the acoustic radiation is directed toward the region of interest within the subject's body.
