  1. 1
CLAIMS 1. A medical device, comprising:a catheter that includes a first cylindrical member that defines a first lumen, the first cylindrical member having a proximal and a distal end, the catheter dimensioned to deliver fluid from a fluid source at the proximal end through the first lumen and into a void of a hollow metal structure at the distal end, and a second cylindrical member that defines a second lumen that is dimensioned to allow for the passage of a guidance member, or guide wire;a compressed, hollow metal structure with a proximal neck and a distal neck, detachably engaged to the catheter, wherein the hollow metal structure, when expanded, assumes a generally rounded form, comprises a single lobe, having a wall comprising a metal sheet, with an interior surface defining a void, and an exterior surface, with an opening in the wall that allows for the passage of fluid from the first lumen into the void, wherein the void of the hollow metal structure and the first lumen of the catheter are fluidly connected, and wherein the passage of fluid from the catheter directly into the void of the compressed hollow metal structure results in expansion of the hollow metal structure;wherein a portion of the wall of the hollow metal structure is formed by electroforming or sputter deposition;and wherein the expanded hollow metal structure, when placed into an artery, vein, or other vascular structure, has sufficient rigidity to remain in an expanded state in vivo, without at least one of: i) the assistance of a higher pressure inside the expanded balloon than outside the expanded balloon;ii) the presence of rigid or semi-rigid material inside the expanded balloon;or iii) the presence of a valve.
  2. 18
A method of filling a portion of the lumen of a saccular aneurysm in a non-human subject with a hollow metal structure, the hollow metal structure having a wall with an exterior surface and an interior surface, whereby the interior surface defines interior space, the method comprising the steps of:positioning a compressed hollow metal structure within the lumen of the void with an attached catheter using a guidance member or guide wire;passing fluid under pressure from a fluid source through a lumen of the catheter and into the interior space of the compressed hollow metal structure until the hollow metal structure is expanded;separating the expanded hollow metal structure from the catheter wherein, after separation, the expanded balloon remains expanded without at least one of: i) the assistance of a higher pressure inside the expanded balloon than outside the expanded balloon;ii) the 02235920X111-01 227440/4 presence of rigid or semi-rigid material inside the expanded balloon;or iii) the presence of a valve;and leaving the hollow metal structure in the lumen of the void while removing the catheter from the void.
