220879/3 CLAIMS 1. Apparatus for the modified atmosphere packaging of products placed in trays, of the type comprising opposing housings, namely an upper housing containing the welding means and the cutting means for use on the barrier film for sealing the trays, and an upwardly open lower housing with a chamber for housing the trays which can be moved into and out of this chamber by suitable means, and comprising means for positioning a stretched portion of film between the two housings and above the trays, as well as means for bringing said housings towards each other to clamp between them the edges of the tray and said film above these edges, and also comprising means for extracting air from the tray and subsequently injecting process gases into the tray to preserve the product placed therein, before the subsequent step of welding the film to the edge of the tray and the subsequent cut along the perimeter of the portion of film welded to the tray there being provided, between the two housings, and below and parallel to the film, a frame having openings with shapes and dimensions suitably greater than the shapes and dimensions in plan view of the underlying trays to be packaged, supported by any means such that, during the closure of the housings, this frame interacts with its own sealing means and/or those of the housings to form a main chamber delimited by the inner surface of the tray containing the product and by the film above this edge, this chamber being initially connected to the inner chambers of the two housings, for the step of removing the air from these chambers and forming the desired degree of vacuum therein, characterized in that, in a subsequent step, said main chamber is isolated by suitable means from the inner chambers of the two housings, so that the process gases for preserving the product can be injected directly into this main chamber through a dedicated circuit connected thereto, while a suitable quantity of atmospheric air is directed into said inner chambers of the housings to counterbalance the pressures on the opposite faces of the film, which, when the process gases have been fed in, is welded in a sealed way to the edge of the tray, two annular sealing means being provided, forming a sealed connection, in said step of the closure of the housings, between the upper face of said frame and the lower edges of the upper housing with the film interposed, while the frame interacts with underlying first annular sealing means which circumscribe the perimeter of the 11 02172248\56-01 220879/3 chamber of the lower housing in which the tray is housed with its edge bearing on suitable supporting means, the whole arrangement being such that the lower face of the frame, together with the portion of film lying above it and the edge of the tray, forms said main chamber which communicates, through apertures distributed along said frame passing through its thickness and located between said upper annular sealing means, with both the inner chamber of the upper housing and the inner chamber of the lower housing, in such a way that the air can be extracted from said main chamber by means connected to at least one of the lower and upper inner chambers, while avoiding undesired deformation of the film;and being further characterized in that it comprises means to bring the two housings closer to each other, when the air has been extracted, to make the interposed frame interact with second annular sealing means on the lower housing beneath it, these means being positioned outside the chamber which contains the trays and being circumscribed by said first annular outer sealing means, in such a way that the space between the two lower sealing mean communicates with the inner chambers of the housings, while the main chamber is isolated from all the rest of the apparatus, making it possible to introduce the process gases into it through at least one of the means which delimit the perimeter of this main chamber, while a corresponding or adequate quantity of atmospheric air is directed into the inner chambers of the two housings.
  2. 5
Apparatus according to the claim 1, characterized in that the outer of the lower gaskets with which said frame interacts and which is carried by the lower housing is 5 of any type which can undergo considerable deformation in the vertical direction, for example a composite gasket.
  3. 6
Apparatus according to the claim 1, characterized in that it is designed to act simultaneously on a plurality of lines of trays and on more than one tray in each line, with the possibility of supplying process gases which may have different 10 characteristics through the lateral manifolds to the lines of trays cyclically treated.
  4. 7
Apparatus according to the claim 1, characterized in that the upper housing is mounted on the appropriate support and vertical movement structure with the interposition of sprung guide means and by means of vertical rods, which have upper rollers interacting with cams which are slidable on guides orthogonal to said rods, the 15 rods being movable by actuators which are also mounted on said structure from a raised position of said rods, in which the apparatus is prepared for the formation of the vacuum in the trays to be packaged, to a lowered position of the rods and of the upper housing connected to them, for the step of injection of the process gases into said main chamber. 20 13 02172248\56-01
