16 Claims:1. A method of treating a wastewater product comprising: introducing the wastewater into a biological treatment unit to provide a wastewater having a reduced nutrient content;separating the wastewater having the reduced nutrient content to provide an effluent and a waste activated sludge;contacting the waste activated sludge with an amount of chlorine dioxide for a period of time sufficient to reduce a concentration of microorganisms in the waste activated sludge and provide a treated waste activated sludge;aerobically digesting the treated waste activated sludge to provide a digested waste activated sludge;dewatering the digested waste activated sludge to provide a dewatered product;seeding the dewatered product with microorganisms to provide a seeded product;drying the seeded product to provide a cake having about 50% total solids;composting the cake at a temperature of less than 60° C to provide the composted product.
  2. 8
A system for treating a wastewater comprising:a source of wastewater;a biological treatment unit connected to an outlet of the source of wastewater;a clarifier connected to an outlet of the biological treatment unit, the clarifier having an effluent outlet and a waste activated sludge outlet;a digester connected to the waste activated sludge outlet;and a chlorine dioxide generator connected to the waste activated sludge outlet.
  3. 14
A method of enhancing methane production in a wastewater treatment process comprising:introducing a wastewater into a biological treatment unit to provide a wastewater having a reduced nutrient content;separating the wastewater having the reduced nutrient content to provide an effluent and a waste activated sludge;contacting the waste activated sludge with an amount of chlorine dioxide for a period of time sufficient to reduce a concentration of microorganisms in the waste activated sludge and provide a treated waste activated sludge having a soluble COD concentration of about 10% of the total COD concentration of the treated waste activated sludge;and anaerobically digesting the treated waste activated sludge to provide a digested waste activated sludge and methane..
  4. 22
A system for enhancing methane production in a wastewater treatment process comprising:a source of wastewater;a biological treatment unit connected to an outlet of the source of wastewater;a clarifier connected to an outlet of the biological treatment unit, the clarifier having an effluent outlet and a waste activated sludge outlet;a digester connected to the waste activated sludge outlet;and a chlorine dioxide generator connected to the waste activated sludge outlet.
