211540/3 CLAIMS 1. A method of identifying Αβ peptides in vivo in a mammal's retina, the method comprising:systemically administering curcumin to the mammal for staining the Αβ peptides in 5 the retina;imaging the mammal's retina with an optical imaging system;and examining the images for stained Αβ peptides.
  2. 4
A method of evaluating the effectiveness of treatment for an Ae peptide associated retinal ailment in vivo in a mammal, the method comprising:20 systemically administering curcumin to the mammal for staining Ae peptides in the retina;imaging the mammal's retina with an optical imaging system;examining the images for stained Ae peptides;and evaluating the effectiveness of treatment for the Ae peptide associated retinal ailment 25 based upon the level of stained Ae peptides in the mammal's retina.
  3. 7
The method of any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein the optical imaging system is 5 selected from the group consisting of a spectrometer, a fluorescence microscope, a stereomicroscope, a mercury arc lamp, a variable wavelength light source, a xenon arc lamp, a CCD gated camera, a color digital camera, an acoustic-optic tunable filter-based spectral image acquisition system, adaptive optics, imaging software, and combinations thereof.
  4. 8
The method of any one of claims 1 to 7, wherein the amount of curcumin 10 administered is less than 12.0 grams and greater 7.5 mg. For the Applicants, WOLFF, BREGMAN AND GOLLER -33 -
