10 claims: 7 independent, 3 dependent

  1. 1
12 208012/2 CLAIMS 1. A microstrip antenna comprising:a loop element configured to generate a magnetic field;a phase tracker comprising a triangular element conductively coupled to the loop element and configured to alter the electric length of the loop element in response to an RF signal applied thereto;and an electric-field radiator configured to generate an electric field, electrically coupled to the circumference of the loop element at a position such that, at the frequency of operation, there is a substantially 90 degree phase difference between the electric field and the magnetic field produced by the antenna.
  2. 4
The antenna of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the phase tracker is positioned at an opposing side of the loop element to the electric-field radiator.
  3. 5
The antenna of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the phase tracker is positioned at a same side of the loop element as the electric-field radiator.
  4. 6
The antenna of any one of the preceding claims, wherein the phase tracker is electrically equivalent to a plurality of L-C components, only some of which resonate at any given frequency and thereby after the electrical length of the loop. 13 208012/2
  5. 7
The antenna of any one of the preceding claims, having an operational bandwidth of approximately 1.8-2.7GHz.
  6. 8
A multi-element antenna comprising a plurality of antennas as claimed in any one of the preceding claims.
  7. 9
A method of transmitting or receiving an RF signal using a microstrip antenna comprising:a loop element generating a magnetic field;a phase tracker comprising a triangular element conductively coupled to the loop element and altering the electric length of the loop in response to an RF signal applied thereto;and an electric-field radiator generating an electric field and electrically coupled to the circumference of the loop element at a position such that, at the frequency of operation, there is a substantially 90 degree phase difference between the electric field and the magnetic field produced by the antenna.
