  1. 1
CLAIMS 1. A system for treating a brain disorder of a patient having at least one cranial nerve, the system comprising:at least one electrode configured for coupling to the at least one cranial nerve of the patient 5 having a brain, and an implantable electrical signal generator coupled to the at least one electrode and capable of applying an electrical signal having a plurality of microbursts to a portion of the at least one cranial nerve of the patient using the at least one electrode to modulate the brain of the patient to treat a brain disorder, each microburst of the plurality of microbursts of the electrical signal being 10 characterized by being patterned and comprising from 2 to 6 pulses per microburst;at least one interpulse interval, each interpulse interval of the at least one interpulse interval occurring between adjacent pulses of the microburst, each interpulse interval ranging from 2 to 10 milliseconds;and 15 a microburst duration of less than or equal to 100 milliseconds, wherein each microburst of the plurality of microbursts is separated from an adjacent microburst by an interburst period of at least 100 milliseconds, and wherein at least one of the number of pulses per microburst, the interpulse interval, the microburst duration, and the interburst period is selected to generate afferent cranial nerve evoked 20 potentials.
  2. 7
An implantable medical device for using to treat a brain disorder in a patient, comprising:10 a means for applying an electrical signal having a plurality of microbursts to a portion of a cranial nerve of said patient, the electrical signal being configured to generate afferent activity on the cranial nerve of the patient to treat the brain disorder, wherein each microburst of the plurality of microbursts is patterned and comprises: from 2 to 6 pulses per microburst;15 at least one interpulse interval, each interpulse interval of the at least one interpulse interval occurring between adjacent pulses of the microburst, each interpulse interval ranging from 2 to 10 milliseconds;and a microburst duration of less than or equal to 100 milliseconds, wherein each microburst of the plurality of microbursts is separated from an adjacent microburst 20 by an interburst period of at least 100 milliseconds.
  3. 11
The implantable medical device according to any one of claims 7 to 10, wherein the means for applying an electrical signal comprises an electrical signal generator coupled to at least one electrode. 10
  4. 16
The system of any one of claims 1 to 6 and 13 to 15 being an implantable medical device.
