  1. 1
What is claimed is:1. A method implemented in a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) for accessing a contention-based uplink random access channel (RACH), the method comprising: randomly selecting a RACH subchannel among a plurality of available RACH subchannels;randomly selecting a signature among a plurality of available signatures;and transmitting a preamble using the selected signature via the selected RACH subchannel at an initial transmission power level that provides a high probability of successful decoding of the preamble by the base station.
  2. 5
A method implemented in a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) for accessing a contention-based uplink random access channel (RACH), the method comprising:randomly selecting a RACH subchannel among a plurality of available RACH subchannels;randomly selecting a signature among a plurality of available signatures;and transmitting a preamble using the selected signature via the selected RACH subchannel;monitoring an acquisition indicator channel (AICH) to detect an acquisition indicator (Al), each Al being carried on a unique time and frequency resource and one־to־one mapped to the preamble used;and if a positive acknowledgement (ACK) is detected on the AICH, sending a message part.
  3. 7
A method implemented in a base station for detecting a contention־ based uplink random access channel (RACH), the method comprising:receiving a preamble on a RACH, an initial transmission power level of the preamble being set to a level providing a high probability of successful decoding of the preamble at the base station;and sending an acquisition indicator (Al) via an acquisition indicator channel (AICH) if a preamble is detected on the RACH.
  4. 26
A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) for accessing a contention־ based uplink random access channel (RACH), the WTRU comprising:a RACH processor configured to randomly select a RACH subchannel among a plurality of available RACH subchannels and a signature among a plurality of available signatures;and a transmitter configured to transmit a preamble using the selected signature via the selected RACH subchannel at an initial transmission power level that provides a high probability of successful decoding of the preamble at a base station.
  5. 30
A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) for accessing a contention־ based uplink random access channel (RACH), the WTRU comprising:a RACH processor configured to randomly select a RACH subchannel among a plurality of available RACH subchannels and a signature among a plurality of available signatures;a transmitter configured to transmit a preamble using the selected signature via the selected RACH subchannel;and an acquisition indicator channel (AICH) processor for monitoring an AICH to detect an acquisition indicator (Al) , each Al being carried on a unique time and frequency resource and one־to־one mapped to the preamble used, wherein the RACH processor sends a message part if a positive acknowledgement (ACK) is detected.
  6. 43
A base station for processing contention-based uplink random access channel (RACH) transmissions, the base station comprising:a preamble detector configured to detect a preamble transmitted by a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) on a RACH subchannel, an initial transmission power level of the preamble being set to a level providing a high probability of successful decoding of the preamble at the base station;and an acquisition indicator channel (AICH) processor configured to send an acquisition indicator (Al) via an AICH to the WTRU when a preamble is detected on the RACH, the Al being one of a positive acknowledgement (ACK) and a negative acknowledgement (NACK).
  7. 47
A base station for processing contention-based uplink random access channel (RACH) transmissions, the base station comprising:a preamble detector configured to detect a preamble signature transmitted by a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) on a RACH subchannel;and an acquisition indicator channel (AICH) processor configured to send an acquisition indicator (Al) via an AICH to the WTRU when a preamble signature is detected on the RACH, each Al being carried on a unique time and frequency resource and one־to־one mapped to the preamble used.
