  1. 1
187384/2 CLAIMS:1. A method for use by a wireless location system (WLS) for locating a wireless device operating in a geographic area served by a wireless communications system, comprising: 5 monitoring a set of predefined signaling links of the wireless communications system, wherein said predefined signaling links include at least an A link between a base station controller (BSC) and a mobile switching center (MSC) and a GSM-MAP link;detecting at least one predefined network transaction involving a pre-set trigger 10 occurring on at least one of said predefined signaling links;in response to the detection of said at least one predefined network transaction involving a predefined trigger, correlating mobile identity data (MSID) detected on said A link with the mobile station ISDN number (MSISDN) detected on said GSM-MAP link for the 15 wireless device associated with said predefined network transaction, wherein said MSID comprises at least one of international mobile subscriber identity (IMSI) data and temporary mobile subscriber identity (TMSI) data;and using the correlated MSID and MSISDN data in subsequent location processing.
  2. 8
The method as recited in any preceding claim, wherein said subsequent location processing comprises at least one predefined location service.
  3. 21
A wireless location system (WLS) configured to be overlaid on a wireless communications system, the WLS comprising:25 a plurality of location measuring units (LMUs) capable of being co-located with a corresponding base trabsceiver station (BTS) of the wireless communications system;63 01790377X75-02 187384/2 a link monitoring system (LMS) for monitoring predefined signaling links of the wireless communications system, wherein said predefined signaling links include at least an A link between a base station controller (BSC) and a mobile switching 5 center (MSC) and a GSM-MAP link;a mechanism for detecting at least one predefined network transaction involving a predefined trigger occurring on at least one of said predefined signaling links, and means responsive to the detection of said at least one predefined network transaction for correlating mobile identity data (MSID) detected on said A link with the 10 mobile station ISDN number (MSISDNP) detected on said GSM-MAP link for a wireless device associated with said predefined network transaction, wherein said MSID comprises at least one of international mobile subscriber identity (IMSI) data and temporary mobile subscriber identity (TMSI) data;and a serving mobile location center (SMLC) for locating the wireless device based 15 on radio signals transmitted by the wireless device using the correlated MSID and MSISDN data.
