System and method for restoring data on demand for instant volume restoration

Abstract

A technique is disclosed for restoring data of sparse volumes, where one or more block pointers within the file system structure are marked as ABSENT, and fetching the appropriate data from an alternate location on demand. Client data access requests to the local storage system initiate a restoration of the data from a backing store as required. A demand generator can also be used to restore the data as a background process by walking through the sparse volume and restoring the data of absent blocks. A pump module is also disclosed to regulate the access of the demand generator. Once all the data has been restored, the volume contains all data locally, and is no longer a sparse volume.

  1. 1
We Claim:1. A method for use with a first storage device, comprising;detecting a failed volume on a first storage device (160) coupled to a first storage system (120a), where the failed volume is stored across the first storage device (160);replacing the failed volume with a new volume;creating an organization of infrastructure for the new volume;populating the new volume with pointers to one or more blocks indicating that data for the blocks is located on a second storage device coupled to a second storage system (120b), characterized by: restoring data of the one or more blocks on demand, wherein one or more pointers to one or more blocks indicating that data for the blocks is located on the second storage device are replaced by pointers to data stored on the first storage device upon receiving a specific request for that data, wherein that data is acquired from the second storage device.
  2. 11
A system for use with a first storage device (160), comprising:a first storage system (120a) with a first volume stored across the first storage device (160), where the first storage device is coupled to the first storage system;a second storage system (120b) configured with a backup copy of the first volume, with the backup copy stored on a second storage device coupled to the second storage system (120b);and in response to the first volume failing, the first storage system (120a) configured to create a sparse volume stored across the first storage device, wherein the sparse volume is initialized with volume infrastructure and a plurality of pointers to data in the backup copy stored on the second storage system (120b), characterized in that the data is restored on demand to the first storage system (120a), wherein one or more pointers to one or more blocks indicating that data for the blocks is located on the second storage device are replaced by pointers to data stored on the first storage device upon receiving a specific request for that data wherein that data is acquired from the second storage device.
