Cutting tool insert

Abstract

A polycrystalline diamond abrasive cutting element consists generally of a layer of high grade polycrystalline diamond bonded to a cemented carbide substrate. The polycrystalline diamond layer has a working surface and an outer peripheral surface and is characterized by having an annular region or a portion thereof adjacent the peripheral surface that is lean in catalysing material. A region adjacent the working surface is also lean in catalysing material such that in use, as a wear scar develops, both the leading edge and the trailing edge thereof are located in a region lean in catalysing material.

12 claims: 4 independent, 8 dependent

  1. 1
Claim Set 1. Abrasive element with polycrystalline diamond, having a layer of polycrystalline diamond, which is bonded at the interface to a base and having on the side away from the interface a working surface and a lateral surface, situated between the working surface and the interface, wherein the abrasive element has a region enriched in catalytic material promoting the sintering during the formation of the polycrystalline diamond, and an annular region depleted in catalytic material, situated on the lateral surface and adjacent to the working surface.
  2. 4
Abrasive element according to any of the preceding claims, in which said annular region extends from the working surface in the direction of the interface for a distance equal to at least half the overall thickness of the layer of polycrystalline diamond, and falls short of the interface by at least approximately 500 pm.
  3. 9
Abrasive element according claim 1, in which the base is made of cemented carbide.
  4. 10
Abrasive element according claim 2, in which said annular region and the region adjacent to the working surface that are depleted in catalytic material form a covering element which fully or partially covers the region enriched in catalytic material.
