Method and system for scalable mobile-terminal platform

Abstract

A mobile terminal includes an access subsystem and an application subsystem. The access subsystem includes at least one access-technology interface. The application subsystem is inter-operably connected to the access subsystem. The application subsystem and the access subsystem are separated via a functional split. The access subsystem provides access by the application subsystem to a first wireless network via a first access-technology interface of the at least one access-technology interface.

  1. 1
CLAIMS:1. A mobile-terminal platform system comprising: an application subsystem comprising hardware and software for providing userapplication services;5 an access subsystem comprising hardware and software for providing connectivity services;wherein the application subsystem and the access subsystem communicate via a defined interface;wherein each of the application subsystem and the access subsystem may be 10 independently scaled;wherein the access subsystem comprises a communication-standard access service stack adapted to operate according to at least one wireless-communication standard;characterized in that: 15 the access subsystem further comprises a data-communications service stack adapted to provide external services for at least one of sockets services and communication-port services;and access to the application subsystem and the access subsystem is permitted via middleware;20 the access subsystem is a gateway and is adapted to route data between different interfaces via an IP-based network;the application subsystem comprises middleware adapted to allow application developers to access the application subsystem and to access the access subsystem through the application subsystem. 25
  2. 21
A method of creating a mobile-terminal platform system, the method comprising the steps of:providing an application subsystem comprising hardware and software for providing user-application services;providing an access subsystem comprising hardware and software for providing connectivity services;inter-operably connecting the application subsystem and the access subsystem via a defined interface;independently scaling at least one of the application subsystem (104) and the access subsystem;permitting access to the application subsystem and the access subsystem via middleware;wherein the access subsystem comprises a communication-standard access service stack for handling air-interface;and wherein the access subsystem further comprises a data-communications service stack for providing external interfaces for sockets services and communication-port services;the access subsystem is a gateway and routes data between different interfaces via an IP-based network;and the application subsystem comprises middleware adapted to allow application developers to access the application subsystem and to access the access subsystem through the application subsystem.
