An optical device, comprising: a light waves-transmitting substrate having at least two major surfaces and edges;optical means for coupling light waves into said substrate by total internal reflection, and a plurality of partially reflecting surfaces located at a distance from each other and carried internally within said substrate wherein said partially reflecting surfaces are parallel to each other and are located at an angle to the major surfaces of the substrate;characterized in that at least two of said partially reflecting surfaces being anisotropic, each anisotropic surface having a major axis, the anisotropic surfaces being mounted with the major axis in different directions, wherein the reflection and transmission properties of the anisotropic surfaces substantially depend on the orientation of the polarization of coupled light waves in relation to the major axis of each anisotropic surface, the anisotropic surfaces being mounted with the major axis in different directions such that said coupled light waves are partially reflected out of the substrate by the partially reflecting surfaces.
