20 claims: 14 independent, 6 dependent

  1. 1
CLAIMS:ן 1. An oil adsorbent polymeric composition for adsorption of chemicals and hydrocarbons from land and water, the adsorbent composition including polyethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, catalyst, cross linking agent, lubricant, blowing agent and bulking agent, wherein said lubricant is a fatty acid.
  2. 3
An adsorbent polymeric composition as claimed in claims 1 or 2 wherein said polyethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer is present in the composition in an amount of 75-95% w/w.
  3. 4
An adsorbent polymeric composition as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein said polyethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer is made up of 2-30% w/w vinyl acetate.
  4. 5
An adsorbent polymeric composition as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4 wherein said catalyst is selected from the group consisting of one or more of zinc oxide, zinc stearate, lead, chromium, copper, cobalt, nickel, silica, compounds or ionic forms thereof and is present in amounts of 0.2-2.0% w/w.
  5. 6
An adsorbent polymeric composition as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5 wherein said crosslinking agent is selected from the group consisting of one or more of diacyl peroxide, dialkyl peroxide, ketone peroxide, peroxy dicarbonates, peroxy esters, tertiary alkyl hydroperoxides, tertiary amyl peroxides, acid chlorides or hydrogen peroxides and is present in amounts of 0.2-1.8% w/w.
  6. 7
An adsorbent polymeric composition as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 6 wherein the bulking agent is selected from the group consisting of calcium carbonate or talc and is present in amounts of up to 25% w/w.
  7. 8
An adsorbent polymeric composition as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 7 further including one or more of odour masking agents, antimicrobial agents, antifungal agents, wetting agents, colourants or dyes.
  8. 9
An adsorbent polymeric composition as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 8 including polyethylene/ethyl vinyl acetate, blowing agent, dicumyl peroxide, stearic acid, zinc oxide and calcium carbonate.
  9. 10
A method of manufacture of an oleophilic adsorbent polymeric composition for use in retrieving and recycling oils, chemicals or hydrocarbons from land or water environment including:forming an admixture of polyethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, catalyst, cross linking agent, lubricant, blowing agent and bulking agent into a crepe;subjecting said crepe to pressure of about 1,000 -12,000 tonnes/m 2 , and temperature in the range 70-400°C, in a sealed vessel;and forming the resultant cake into a shape or form suited to the environment to be treated.
  10. 13
An oil adsorbent polymeric composition for adsorption of chemicals and hydrocarbons from land and water, the adsorbent composition including polyethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, catalyst, cross linking agent, lubricant, blowing agent and bulking agent, wherein said lubricant is a fatty acid, manufactured by a method including:forming an admixture of said composition into a crepe;subjecting said crepe to pressure of about 1,000 -12,000 tonnes/m 2 , and temperature in the range 70400°־C, in a sealed vessel;and forming the resultant cake into a shape or form suited to the environment to be treated.
  11. 16
A method of treating an environment to remove oil, chemical or hydrocarbon pollutant including applying to said environment an adsorbent polymeric composition as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 9 or 13 to 15. I
  12. 17
A filter for off site treatment of soil or water contaminated by oil, chemicals or hydrocarbons, said filter including an adsorbent polymeric composition as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 9 or 13 to 15.
  13. 18
The composition according to any one of claims 1-9, 13-15 substantially as described hereinabove.
  14. 19
The method according to any one of claims 10-12 and 16 substantially as described hereinabove.
