Wound dressing to control severe bleeding and method for manufacture thereof

Abstract

Dental dressing assemblies are formed from hydrophilic polymer sponge structures, such as a densified chitosan biomaterial. The invention also contemplates systems and methods that can be used in conjunction with stents and periodontal dressings to promote hemostasis and secondary healing in free gingival graft palatal donor sites and all other oral and maxillofacial surgical sites.

/ CLAIMS:1. A method for producing a chitosan wound dressing comprising • providing an aqueous solution including a chitosan biomaterial;5 . placing the aqueous solution in a mold;• freezing the aqueous solution within the mold by cooling the mold and aqueous solution according to prescribed conditions to form a frozen chitosan structure within the mold;• removing water from the frozen chitosan structure by a prescribed freeze-drying 10 process to form a sponge chitosan structure having a thickness and a density;• compressing the sponge chitosan structure by the application of heat and pressure to reduce the thickness and increase the density of the sponge chitosan structure to form a densified chitosan structure;and • preconditioning the densified chitosan structure by heating the densified 15 chitosan structure according to prescribed conditions to form a wound dressing having adhesion strength and resistance to dissolution in high blood flow bleeding situations.
  2. 9
A wound dressing to control severe bleeding containing a chitosan biomaterial and a backing comprising a polymeric material, characterized in that the chitosan biomaterial comprises a freeze-dried and heat-pressed structure having a density of 10 between 0.5 g/cm 3 to 0.14 g/cm 3 .
  3. 10
A method of manufacturing a wound dressing to control severe bleeding comprising freeze-drying a chitosan biomaterial, and heat pressing the freeze-dried ך ך chitosan biomaterial to a density of between 0.5 g/cm to 0.14 g/cm .
