151306/2 THE CLAIMS DEFINING THE INVENTION ARE AS FOLLOWS:- 1. A method for controlling a population of target aquatic pest microorganisms in an aquatic environment infested with the target aquatic pest microorganisms by adding to water infested with the aquatic pest microorganisms an effective amount of at least one aquacidal compound selected from the group consisting of: (a) quinones, (b) naphthalenediones and (c) anthraquinones, where the aquacidal compound has the chemical structure: 0
  2. 14
    17. The method of any one of claims 1 to 16, where the population of target aquatic pest microorganisms is selected from the group consisting of viruses, protists, fungi, holoplanktonic organisms, meroplanktonic organisms, molds, plants, demersal organisms, benthic organisms, detached or floating biota, bacteria, encysted bacteria, protozoans, algae, pjorophyta, cryptophyta, chrysophyta, porifera, platyhelminthes, .. 151306/2 -27- pseudocoelomates, annelid worms, zebra mollusks, bivalves, larval forms of copepods, ostracods, mysids, gammarids, larval forms of decapods, and larval teleost fish.
  3. 21
    24. A method of any one of claims 17 to 23 where the population of target aquatic pest microorganisms includes pest microorganisms from a plurality of species.
  4. 24
    27. A method of any one of claims 1 to 26 where the water infested with the aquatic pest microorganisms is an enclosed volume of water.
  5. 25
    28. A method of 27 where the enclosed volume of water is a ballast water reservoir.
  6. 26
    29. A volume of water treated according to the method of any one of claims 1 to 28. '
  7. 27
    30. A method for killing a target population of mollusk pests in an aqueous system hosting said population comprising the step of adding to said aqueous system a toxic amount of an aquacidal compound selected from the group consisting of:2-methyl-5-hydroxy-l,4-naphthoquinone;2-methyl-1,4-naphthalenedione;2-me£hyl-2-sodium metabisulfite-1,4-naphthalenedione;3 -methyl-1, S-dihydroxyanthraquinone;2-methylanthraquinone;1,4-naphthalenedione;and mixtures thereof.
  8. 30
    33. The method of any one of claims 3 0 to 32 where the mollusk pests are exposed to said aquacidal compound for a period of time sufficient to kill said pests. 151306/2 - 29 -
  9. 31
    34. The method of one of claims 30 to 33 where the mollusk pests are exposed to said aquacidal compound for a period of time within the range of 1 -96 hours.
  10. 32
    35. Ballast water including an effective amount of at least one aquacidal compound selected from the group consisting of:(a) quinones, (b) naphthalenediones and (c) anthraquinones, where the aquacidal compound has the chemical structures:
  11. 40
    44. The ballast water of any one of claims 35 to 42 where the aquacidal compound 151306/2 is present in the water in an amount of less than 1 wt %.
  12. 44
    49. A method for killing a target population of mollusk pests in an aqueous environment, substantial])' as herein described with reference to any one of the embodiments of the invention illustrated in the accompanying examples. 50. Ballast water including an effective amount of at least one aquacidal compound, substantially as herein described with reference to an)' one of the embodiments of the invention illustrated in the accompanying examples.
