    CLAIMS:1. Use of a linear metal-binding peptide which does not have a metal ion bound to it or a physiologically-acceptable salt thereof in the manufacture of a medicament for binding a metal ion (a) in an animal in need thereof or (b) in an organ or tissue that has been removed from an animal, the formula of the peptide being: P!-P2> wherein: P! is: Xaa, Xaa^ His or Xaa! Xaaj His Xaa 3 ;P 2 is (Xaa״(״;Xaa, is glycine, alanine, valine, leucine, isoleucine, serine, threonine, aspartic acid, asparagine, glutamic acid, glutamine, lysine, hydroxylysine, histidine, arginine, ornithine, phenylalanine, tyrosine, tryptophan, cysteine״ methionine, or a-hydroxymethylserine;Xaa, is alanine, β-alanine, valine, leucine, iso leucine, threonine, aspartic acid, asparagine, glutamic acid, glutamine, lysine, hydroxylysine, histidine, arginine, ornithine, phenylalanine, tyrosine, tryptophan, cysteine, methionine, or a-hydroxymethylserine;Xaa-j is glycine, alanine, valine, lysine, arginine, ornithine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, asparagine, glutamine or tryptophan;Xaa 4 is any amino acid;and n is 010־.

    Use according to Claim 1 ofthe peptide or physiologically-acceptable salt thereof in the manufacture of a medicament for binding a metal ion in an animal in need thereof.

    Use according to Claim 2 wherein administration to the animal of the peptide or physiologically-acceptable salt thereof reduces the damage done byreactive oxygen species in the animal.

    Use according to Claim 2 wherein administration to the animal of the peptide or physiologically-acceptable salt thereof reduces the concentration of a metal ion in the animal.

    . Use according to Claim 2 wherein the animal is in need of the peptide or physiologically-acceptable salt thereof because the animal is exhibiting symptoms of possible ischemia.

    Use according to Claim 2 wherein the animal is in need of the peptide or physiologically-acceptable salt thereof to treat an ischemic disease or condition. ך. Use according to Claim 2 wherein the animal is in need of the peptide or physiologically-acceptable salt thereof because of the need to reperfuse an ischemic tissue or organ in the animal.

    8. Use according to Claim ר wherein the peptide or physiologically-acceptable salt thereof is administered to the animal prior to reperfusion, during with reperfusion, after reperfusion, or combinations thereof.

    9. Use according to Claim 6 or 7 wherein the animal is suffering from cerebrovascular ischemia and the ischemic tissue is located in the brain of the animal.

    10. Use according to Claim 6 or 7 wherein the animal is suffering from cardiovascular ischemia and the ischemic tissue is located in the heart of the animal.

    11. Use according to Claim 2 wherein the animal is in need of the peptide or physiologically-acceptable salt thereof because of the need to perform surgery on the animal.

    12. Use according to Claim 11 wherein the peptide or physiologically-acceptable salt thereof is administered to the animal prior to surgery, during surgery, after surgery, or combinations thereof.

Use according to any one of Claims 1-22 wherein:Xaa! is glycine, valine, leucine, isoleucine, serine, asparagine, glutamic acid, glutamine, lysine, hydroxylysine, histidine, arginine, ornithine, phenylalanine, tyrosine, tryptophan, cysteine, methionine, or a.-hydroxymethylserine;and Xaaj is alanine, β-alanine, valine, leucine, isoleucine, threonine, aspartic acid, asparagine, glutamic acid, glutamine, lysine, hydroxylysine, histidine, arginine, ornithine, phenylalanine, tyrosine, tryptophan, cysteine, methionine, or a-hydroxymethylserine.
