111 claims: 8 independent, 103 dependent

  1. 1
130295/2 •· - 19- I claim:1. An ocular scleral prosthesis adapted for insertion into the sclera of an eye in the region of the ciliary body comprising: • a base member having an elongated planform with a major dimension, a minor dimension, an inner major surface and an outer major surface, said outer major surface being generally smooth and adapted to contact ocular tissue within a pocket surgically formed within scleral tissue of the eye, and • a ridge member on said base member that applies an outward force to the pocket to thereby elevate the sclera in the region of the ciliary body.
  2. 29
The prosthesis of any one of claims 1 to 28 for insertion into the sclera, for use in treating a disorder selected from presbyopia, hyperopia, primary open angle glaucoma, and ocular hypertension, wherein • said sclera comprises a plurality of elongated pockets formed in said sclera of an eye in the region of the ciliary body to serve to said insertion, each pocket having a lengthwise dimension being oriented generally transversely to a meridian of said eye, • said pockets have an anterior margin and a posterior margin, said anterior margin being located a distance of from about 0.5 millimeters to about 4.5 millimeters posterior to the limbus of said eye;and • said scleral prosthesis comprises an elongated base having a first end and a second end and means for expanding said sclera to increase the effective working distance of the ciliary muscle of the eye.
  3. 30
A scleral prosthesis for use in treating certain eye disorders comprising a body having a first end and a second end and adapted for association with the sclera of an eye, said body having a shape prescribed 130295/3 -23- to exert a force with respect to the eye to increase the working distance of the ciliary muscle of the eye.
  4. 33
A prosthesis adapted for contact with the sclera of an eyeball, said prosthesis comprising an elongated base having a first end and a second end and means for expanding said contacted sclera to increase the effective working distance of the ciliary muscle of the eyeball.
  5. 46
A prosthesis adapted for surgical implant into a pocket in the sclera of an eyeball, said prosthesis comprising an elongated base having a first end and a second end and one of a ridge and a crest, said implanted prosthesis applying an outward force on said scleral pocket to elevate the portion of the sclera attached thereto to increase the effective working distance of the ciliary muscle of the eyeball.
  6. 52
A prosthesis adapted for contact with the sclera of an eyeball, said prosthesis comprising an elongated base having a first end and a second end and one of a ridge and a crest, said prosthesis expanding said 130295/2 -26- contacted sclera to increase the effective working distance of the ciliary muscle of the eyeball.
  7. 53
An ocular scleral prosthesis of any one of claims 1 to 52 comprising:• an elongated body adapted to be implanted in an elongated pocket surgically formed within scleral tissue of an eye, said pocket being formed in the zone of the globe of said eye exterior to the ciliary body and extending generally circumferentially of said zone for a predetermined length, • said pocket having a base comprised of inner layers of said scleral tissue, a flap formed from outer layers of said scleral tissue, an anterior margin and a posterior margin, • said elongated body having a first surface and a second surface, said first surface and said second surface being adapted to contact said base and said flap of said scleral pocket, • said first surface and said second surface being separated by a distance sufficient to elevate said flap and exert outwardly directed traction on at least said anterior margin of said pocket.
  8. 110
The prosthesis of claims 53 for insertion into the sclera, for use in treating hyperopia, wherein • said eye has a sclera forming a generally globular outer layer of said eye, a transparent cornea forming anterior surface of said eye, a limbus formed by the junction of said cornea with said sclera, a generally circular ciliary body located inwardly of said sclera posterior to said limbus, and a crystalline lens located centrally within said ciliary body and having an equator, said equator of said lens defining a plane intersecting said sclera in a generally circular intersection posterior to said limbus, 130295/2 -34- • said sclera comprises a plurality of elongated pockets formed in said sclera to serve for said insertion, each pocket having a lengthwise dimension being oriented generally transversely to a meridian of said eye, and. • said pockets have an anterior margin and a posterior margin, said anterior margin being located a distance of from about 0.5 millimeters to about 4.5 millimeters posterior to said limbus.
