  1. 1
What is claimed is:]. A composite material, which is an ophthalmic device, with one of several wettable surfaces capable of holding a continous layer of aqueous fluid thereon, which composite material comprises a) a bulk material, and b) a hydrophilic coating, characterized in that the hydrophilic coating consists of a carbohydrate attached covalently to reactive groups at the surface of the bulk material, wherein said carbohydrate is attached either directly or via functional groups of an oligofunctional compound, wherein said oligofunctional compound has functional groups being capable of reacting with said reactive groups at the surface of the bulk material and with the carbohydrate, and wherein said reactive groups are either inherently (a priori) present in the bulk material or wherein said reactive groups have been attached to the surface of the bulk material by a plasma surface treatment;with the exception of those ophthalmic devices wherein the carbohydrate is D־glucosamin which is attached to reactive groups of the bulk material via an epoxy group of an an oligofunctional compound having a single epoxy group, and with the exception of those ophthalmic devices wherein the carbohydrate D-glucosamin is attached to reactive groups of the bulk material which are epoxy groups and which are inherently present in the bulk material.
  2. 5
A composite material according to claim נ wherein the carbohydrate is attached covalently to the reactive groups via a oligofunctional compound. ־32־
  3. 14
    16. A composite material according to claim 14 wherein the oligofunctional compound is a di isocyanate.
  4. 17
    19. A composite material according to claim 17 wherein the oligofunctional compound is a bis-oxirane having different reactivity with respect to its two functional groups.
  5. 24
    26. A composite material according 10 claim 1 wherein reactive groups are inherently present in the bulk material, wherein the carbohydrate is a polysaccharide which is directly bonded to the reactive groups.
