16 claims: 4 independent, 12 dependent

  1. 1
Claims What is claimed is:1. A spread spectrum channel apparatus which accommodates variable received data bit rates having forward error correction encoder means for receiving data bits at a particular bit rate and encoding the received data bits at a predetermined encoding rate into data symbols and having modulator means, operatively coupled to the forward error correction encoder means, for deriving predetermined length orthogonal codes from the data symbols, the Improvement is characterized by: (a) the forward error correction encoder means setting the predetermined encoding rate in response to the received data bit rate;and (b) the modulator means setting the predetermined length of the orthogonal codes in response to the received data bit rate.
  2. 5
A spread spectrum channel apparatus which accommodates variable received data bit rates having forward error correction encoder means for receiving data bits at a particular bit rate and encoding the received data bits at a predetermined encoding rate into data symbols and having code division channel means, operatively coupled to the forward error correction encoder means, for determining a particular channel to transmit the data symbols by spreading the data symbols with a predetermined length orthogonal code, characterized in that:(a) the forward error correction encoder means set the predetermined encoding rate in response to the received data bit rate;and (b) the code division channel means set the predetermined length of the orthogonal code in response to the received data bit rate,
  3. 9
A method of communicating a spread spectrum signal while accommodating variable traffic data bit rates of the type having the step of encoding received data bits at a predetermined encoding rate into data symbols and the step of deriving orthogonal codes of a predetermined length from the data symbols, characterized by the steps of:(a) determining the particular bit rate at which received traffic data bits were provided to a spread spectrum channel apparatus;and (b) setting a predetermined encoding rate and a predetermined length for an orthogonal code in response to the predetermined particular bit rate.
  4. 13
A method of communicating a spread spectrum signal while accommodating variable traffic data bit rates of the type having the step of encoding received data bits at a predetermined encoding rate into data symbols and the step of determining a particular channel to transmit the data symbols by spreading the data symbols with a predetermined length orthogonal code, characterized by the steps of:(a) determining the particular bit rate at which received traffic data bits were provided to a spread spectrum channel apparatus;and (b) setting a predetermined encoding rate and a predetermined length for an orthogonal code in response to the determined particular bit rate.
