BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to a data transmission system, more specifically to a programmable universal modem, and to a method of using it which is selectively applicable to a landline telephone system or a variety of other telephone systems, particularly radiotelephones.
Recently, mobile data transfer has been difficult because there was no public medium capable of selectively interconnecting highly separate mobile users who wanted to exchange data with one another. The first mobile information transmission system of this type became widely available to the public only in the last decade, in the form of cellular radiotelephone systems. These cellular radiotelephone systems are primarily designed for voice transmission, but the inventors in the art have developed data modems that can be used with these cellular radiotelephone systems. A commercially available and commercially available modem of this type is described in U.S. Patent No. 4,697,281 and was an early modem capable of detecting cellular line characteristics, but such modems were designed for a particular type of cellular telephone and therefore, this modem is not was used for many other phones.
An early attempt to solve this problem resulted in the development of a microprocessor-controlled interface that connects to the cellular phone bus
78591-5203 was populated and provided an external connector that mimicked a standard RJ-11 landline telephone connector. Some of these interfaces, such as those described in U.S. Patent No. 4,718,080, were suitable for connection to a variety of cellular telephones and modified their operation so that each telephone could be used effectively. The AB-3X interface by Morrison and Dempsey Communications was able to work with different cellular phones using different connection cables and using internal target-oriented semiconductor crumbs installed in the device. US 4,012,596, US 4,658,096, US 4,775,997, US 4,922,517 and US 4,737,975 disclose conventional cellular interfaces that mimic conventional landline telephone line connector.
At the same time, though, these interfaces mimicking the ear telephone lines are capable of achieving the stated purposes, but have a number of drawbacks which render them unusable for certain desirable uses. First and foremost, these interfaces reduce the connected computing devices to the smallest common divisor in terms of control capability, similar to an old type of mechanical telephone. Thus, although the computer and modem connected to such an interface are capable of performing complex control tasks, and the microprocessor-controlled cellular telephone is capable of performing many tasks and providing digital status information, however, the location of a two-wire standard analog telephone interface78591-5203 • · · · ·
- 4 does not allow for complex cooperation between interconnected systems between these two microprocessor systems. In addition, these interfaces, which mimic a conventional landline telephone connector, include expensive and power-intensive circuits, such as a dial tone generator. Finally, using such a system when coupled with a modem to a cellular telephone does not promote the high level of integration and portability required to make the portable data transmission device practical for multiple users, such as the need for additional cables, external power, must win.
One such shortcoming is exemplary of circuit boards, cases, and what is disclosed to the user today in U.S. Patent No. 4,837,812 is a telecopier (telefax machine) that is capable of operating in both landline and radiotelephone systems. Its output level can be set with a variable resistor to the correct value required by the wireless phone. This unit automatically switches from wired to radio mode, depending on the loop status of the telephone connected to it. However, this patent does not sufficiently describe a radiotelephone dialer that would be operated by this fax machine.
U.S. Pat. No. 4,868,863 discloses an interface for connecting a modem to a landline telephone system that varies from country to country, and recommends that the modem be digitized. _ _ ·· · · ··. · ♦ ...........
It can be used to output analogue output, but does not • provide a solution for connecting the modem to a radio telephone to control it.
With the development of more and more types of telephone systems, such as airplane passenger phones, digital cellular telephone systems, low power personal telephone systems and others, the shortcomings of prior art interface solutions have become more and more apparent as more and more interfaces you have to get it and carry it, which is less and less acceptable.
U.S. Patent Application Serial No. 07 / 531,762, entitled System and Method for Adapting Computers to Various Telephone Networks and Applicant's Applicant, discloses a novel interface system in which standard modem transmits analog data signals and generic digital control signals through a single connector. When connected to a conventional landline telephone connector, it produces a standard DTMF (Dualtone Multifrequency) signal to transmit call and ring data. A suitable external interface cable compatible with one or more of these alternative telephone systems may be connected between the modem connector and the devices of the various alternative telephone systems. so when connected, the modem controls its telephone using its generic digital control language and

<img file="HUT67256A_D0001.tif" />
converts general commands into control signals that are appropriate for the bus circuitry of the telephone being used, which is located in the interface cable.
This interference arrangement has a number of significant advantages over pre-emptive interface layouts, as only a single, relatively simple modem can be used virtually for any type of telephone system or telephone set. The interface cable of this system is part of the interface layout and is tailor-made for a particular phone, very lightweight, cheap to manufacture compared to previous interfaces, and powered by either a laptop battery or a phone battery without adversely affecting battery life. However, if a modem of this type is to be used in conjunction with a variety of alternative telephone systems such as those currently being developed, the use of cables containing converter circuits and processing parts is less and less desirable due to the cost of creating such cables. Therefore, there is a need to develop an interface system and method that is capable of connecting a standard modem to many different types of telephone systems without the need for an intermediate signal processing structure.
Therefore, it is an object of the present invention to provide a system that includes a general purpose modem and is capable of cooperating with many different types of telephone systems.

Figures 1a and 1b show a portable data transmission system according to the present invention, which is shown schematically in the figure.

11 is configured for use while the portable data transmission system 102 of FIG. 1b is configured for use with a conventional telephone system. In both embodiments, the data transmission system 102 comprises a computer 104 comprising a central processing unit 106, a program store 108, and a modem 110.
The computer 104 may be of any type. In a preferred embodiment, computer 104 is an IBM-compatible notebook computer running Microsoft's MS-DOS operating system. The 106 CPUs are typically of the Intel 80X86 series. The central processing unit 106 is connected to access the program storage 108, which is housed in a memory unit such as a random access, read-only or reprogrammable non-volatile memory, or a mass storage device such as a magnetic disk, optical disk, or bubble memory. It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the computer 104 includes a plurality of other operating elements connected to the central processing unit 106. For example, various memories and storage units, I / O ports, auxiliary processors and other necessary auxiliary elements are incorporated. Preferably, the computer 104 is further provided with a means for assisting and interacting with the computer 104. Examples of such items are the screen and the keyboard or touch screen. Because this other construction is generally conventional, we have omitted both la and lb,
78591-5203 as the figure is clearer and does not need to be described in more detail.
The central unit 106 is connected to a new type of modem 110 whose gate 112 connects the modem 110 to a telephone network device. The modem 110 is preferably mounted on the motherboard of the computer 104 or on a separate circuit board and inserted into the dedicated connector of the computer 104 for this purpose. However, modem 110 can also be configured as an external unit that can be connected externally to computer 104. The gate 112 of modem 110 is preferably in the form of a conventional eight pin standard RJ-45 telephone connector.
1a is a gate 112
114 The cable 116 is connected to the connector 118 of the device 116, which device 116 forms a terminal for connection to an alternative telephone system. The term alternative telephone system will hereinafter be used to denote telecommunication systems other than conventional analogue terrestrial telephone systems which permit the transmission of information between a first station and one of a plurality of other stations that can be selected by the first station, by dialing at the first station. or an equivalent operation. The invention will now be described with reference to an example of a cellular radiotelephone system, wherein the device 116 is a terminal implemented by a radiotelephone. It will be understood, however, that the invention is not limited to such use, but to any other alteration
78591-5203 may also be used with native and existing alternative telephony systems, presently or in the future, including cellular telephones, low power personal telephones, satellite telephones, airplane seat telephones and other types of telephones.
The control unit 120 of the conventional radiotelephone 116 comprises a transceiver 122 and a bus 124 connected between the control unit 120 and the transceiver 122. The bus 124 is provided with a connector 118 which allows the external connection of one or more lines thereof. The device 116 may be an integrated handheld device, but the control unit 120 and the transceiver 122 may be housed in a separate housing, whereby the bus 124 includes a cable connecting the control unit 120 and the transceiver 122. If the device 116 is an integrated handheld radiotelephone, the connector 118 is a self-contained connector in the body of the device 116, which allows external access to selected data and control lines of the bus 124. If device 116 is housed in a plurality of separate housings, connector 118 may be incorporated as a tap into the connection between control unit 120 and transceiver 122.
The connecting cable 114 is provided with an RJ45 connector at one end for attaching to modem 110 gate 112, and at the other end with a counterpiece mating to connector 118. Cable 114 includes receive (RX) line 126, data transfer (TX) line 128, one or more programmable digital input / output DIO lines 130.
78591-5203
It should be noted that in the preferred embodiment, the connection between the radiotelephone device 116 and the modem 110 is described, but other embodiments are contemplated. For example, parallel digital data transmission lines may be provided for receiving and / or transmitting (RX and / or TX) functions. Further, wireless interconnection using radio frequency or infrared transceivers and receivers, which may replace physical interconnection by physical wiring, is also possible.
It has been found that the devices of most telephone networks can be controlled by alternative telephone networks, such as the radiotelephone 116, with only a few programmable digital input / output 130 DIO lines. Of particular importance is the recognition that many alternative types of phones can be effectively controlled and operated for data transmission and reception using the RX126 line and the TX128 line, with up to three programmable 130 DIO lines. A larger number of DIO lines 130 can be used if there is a second connector in addition to the RJ-45 connector or if the connector has multiple connection points. In a secondary embodiment, the lines carried by the gate 112 of the modem 110 are distributed between a plurality of connectors. For example, loop and ring lines from port 112 may be carried by a standard RJ-11 connector, while RX-126 and TX128 and DIO lines 130 may be carried by a separate connector, such as an RJ-45 connector.
78591-5203
Modem 110 may be configured to provide a plurality of input and output signals to DIO lines 130, depending on the type of device 116 of the alternative telephone system being used. Then, by connecting the modem 110 and the telephone 116 of the alternative telephone with a suitable cable 114, the user can transmit data using the computer 114 in connection with the alternative telephone network. In the illustrated embodiment, that is, the user is able to select the type of device 116 to be used by using the program of the computer 104 stored in the appropriate program memory 108. Appropriate portions of the program can then be loaded into modem 110 and selected for use, so that the lines carried by the cable 114 effectively operate the device 116 and control the making of calls and the transmission and reception of data. Thus, the modem 110 can be used with any type of alternative telephone system, including cellular telephones, low power personal telephones, airplane seat telephones, satellite and other telephone systems which are already known or will be developed. Preferably, modem 110 can operate in a variety of protocols, depending on the characteristics of the telephone system used for data transmission. When used in conjunction with a cellular telephone system, modem 110 preferably operates in accordance with the protocol described in U.S. Patent 4,697,281, which is not described in detail herein.
78591-5203
As shown in Figure 1b, computer 104 including modem 110 may be connected to a telephone interface 132 of a conventional land-based telephone system, which is in fact a telephone for use with a conventional telephone system. As mentioned above, gate 112 is preferably implemented in the form of an RJ-45 connector. The telephone interface 132 may be implemented as an RJ11 wall plug that provides a loop and a ring connection to the local exchange. A cable 134 is connected between the RJ-45 connector of the modem 112 port and the telephone interface 132 of the telephone network, which connects the loop and ringing lines of the modem 110 port 112 to the corresponding loop and ringing lines of the conventional telephone system 132. Preferably, the RJ-45 connector 4 and 5 of the RJ-45 connector 110 that connects to the modem 110 are associated with the loop and ring lines, so that the cable 134 is a conventional and standard telephone cable having an RJ-11 connector at each end. Thus, the modem 110 is compatible with a large number of telephone systems, but remains compatible with the analog loop and ring lines of a conventional telephone system. Further information on the operation and programming of modem 110 is provided in U.S. Serial No. 07 / 531,762, issued June 1, 1990. filed on filing date, the contents of which are deemed to be within the scope of this application. When the computer 104 and the modem 110 are connected to a telephone interface 132 of a conventional telephone system as shown in Figure 1b, the modem 110 is a standard,

- Generates and transmits 17 multi-frequency dual-tone telephone control signals (DTMF signals) to the loop and ring lines to initiate a call, and subsequently transmits data over the loop and ring lines. Connected to an alternative telephone system, such as a cellular telephone system 116 as shown in FIG. 1a, the modem 110 generates digital control signals and thereby controls the initiation of a call. The generated control signals are transmitted via programmable DIO lines 130 and / or RX-126 and TX-128 which are typical of the type of alternative telephone used and can be selected by software or program.
The software stored in program memory 108 is a telecommunication program designed for this purpose and initiates and controls the operation of modem 110. The primary function of the program is to select and load to the modem 110 a driver program designed for a particular telephone set used for data transmission system 102. The term "controlling" is used to mean a combination of various program instructions and / or data that have the characteristics of the type, model, or type of device that you want to connect to the telephone network. In one embodiment, there is a specially designed software driver for each of the telephone sets used with the system.
In another embodiment, a driver program for this purpose handles conventional telephone systems and a generic driver program serves the alternative

for the operation of devices of braiding systems. The generalized driver uses a data table that contains driver data that defines the interface layout of different alternative telephone sets. The generalized program works properly with the specified alternative type of telephone system by calling this feed and retrieving the various information as needed at each step of the program. The first table contains a typical list of data elements sufficient to perform some of the basic functions of the data transmission system 102. In many cases, this datasheet contains bit masks that identify which RX, TX, and DIO lines should be used for a particular transmission or sensing operation. Since less than eight of these lines are preferred in the preferred embodiment, a single byte size mask is sufficient to determine the function of these lines in a given operation. The basic list of data items in the first table can be expanded as desired to include any information about the phone that is required to perform the desired operation.

Typically, the driver for a particular type of handset must be downloaded into the memory of the modem 110 (for example, a so-called flash upgradeable memory) before being used with the modem 110. The choice of driver design depends on the number of telephones you wish to use with a single 110 modem. If a very large number of telephones are to be used, the memory required to store different drivers will be large for each telephone, and it may be desirable to create a generic operating program that uses the data table shown in Figure 1 for each telephone, e.g. program at the same time and allows you to replace or upgrade your drivers as needed.
2 is a generalized flow chart of the program stored in program storage unit 108. When control of the central unit 106 is taken over by the program in the program storage unit 108, it first determines the type and type of telephone to be used to establish a telecommunications connection. This process is illustrated by 150 steps in the flowchart. Preferably, it provides the user with a baseline based on preventive uses, but the baseline may be based on the type of cable connected or the reception of a signal specific to a telephone line or bus, which is detected by the gate 112 of modem 110. If the cable is detected, then the default value for all devices is basic
78591-5203
- It is feasible in 21 classes, that is, a setpoint for loop and ringing devices, and a setpoint for alternative telephone sets. If you have previously downloaded the driver information for specific telephone sets into the memory of the modem 110, this information can also be used to determine the default value. For example, if the information stored in modem 110 relates to a conventional telephone device driver and another driver information relates to a NEC P300 cellular radiotelephone, detecting a cable connected to the modem 110 port 112 may determine whether it is different from loop and ring lines. selects the driver for the NEC P300 as a default.
If real bus signals are detected, and not just a common cable connection, the program stored in program memory 108 may be capable of identifying, or at least approximating, a particular model of the telephone set by providing the standby signal levels on the bus 124 of the alternative telephone set. This means that the telephone can switch some lines to high and others to low.
The bit pattern detected on the RX, TX, and DIO lines can then be compared with the bit mask specified for each alternative telephone type in order to probe or determine the type of connected telephone.
The program storage 108 may contain driver programs which are commercially available
78591-5203 • ·· • · · Available for alternative types of phones. However, as the latest types of drivers are difficult to store and distribute and may not bring significant benefits, the user will usually encounter only a few alternative types of phones. Generally, therefore, the driver for the conventional landline telephone system is integrated in the program store 108 and the driver for the particular alternative type of telephone may be sold in separate packages with a corresponding cable 114. Thus, only a few (maybe one to ten) driver programs can be used by a single user for a telephone within the telephone system, and it may be possible to identify all but one of the connected telephones, and in a very rudimentary way by detecting lines in the telephone.
Preferably, the user can view in the menu the telephones for which there is a driver program in the data transmission system 102 and select the device to be used or the preferred telephones to be used.
If the default telephone used as the default telephone is accepted or manually selected by another user, the program store program 108 determines in step 152 of the flowchart whether the required driver is included in the modem 110's memory. If the selected driver is not included in the modem 110, the program will preferably download the driver into the memory of the modem 110 in step 154 of the flowchart.
78591-5203

Mass. Preferably, the driver is stored in non-volatile memory and is only required for download the first time it is turned on, after the user has acquired a new handset to connect to the telephone network, but no download is required each time the modem 110 is operated. However, if desired, the program in program memory 108 may instead operate by downloading the desired driver program into the forgotten-type bath in modem 110 each time the program in program memory 108 begins to operate.
The program in program memory 108, after ensuring that the desired driver is available, in step 156 designates the driver as a working drive, for example, by pointing to the appropriate memory location for the instructions of the desired driver and / or your data. In this way, the modem 110 operates with the selected drive.
Then, in step 158 of the flowchart, the program sends instructions to modem 110 to determine the desired operation. For example, if a data call is to be made to 555-1234, an instruction for this purpose (preferably part of a predefined or standardized modem instruction set) is sent by the computer 104 to the modem 110.
Then, in step 160, the program operates by transmitting digital data in one or both directions between the computer 104 and a remote modem through the interconnecting telephone system. This information is transmitted in several ways

24 may be implemented which are known in the art and may include script processing functions, file transfer functions, or the computer 104 may be placed in terminal emulation mode to interactively interact with a remote device.
Of course, one skilled in the art will recognize that the system of the present invention can perform the same operations with different processing, storage, and software configurations as with other embodiments other than those described, such as modem 110 being directly controlled by computer 104 program is also on the computer 104 instead of being downloaded to the modem 110. This mode may be advantageous when modem 110 is integrated into the motherboard of computer 104.
FIG. 3 is a schematic diagram of the modem 110 and cable 114 of FIG. 1a configured for a device 116 of a NEC P300 cellular radiotelephone. Modem 110 has a computer connector port 202, controller 204, memory 206, data pump 208, operational amplifiers 210 and 212, disconnect transformer 214, loop switch 216, and resistors and capacities for biasing, charging, isolating, leveling, and associated with each element. Controller 204, memory 206, and data pump 208 are conventional designs. For example, the controller may be a Rockwell C19, a memory 206 such as a Toshiba TC55257 and a data pump 208 may be of the Rockwell R6634 type.
78591-5203
Modem 110 gate 112 includes 8 lines terminating in an externally accessible RJ-45 connector. The pin 8 of this connector is connected to the RX or receive line 218, which is operatively connected to the RX-In terminal of data pump 208 and to the first I / O port of controller 204. Contact 7 is connected to ground. Pin 6 is connected to a +5 V DC via a resistor connected to the supply voltage and is connected via a DIO line 220 to the second 1/0 port of controller 204. The five-pin terminal of the RJ-45 connector is connected to the four-pin terminal of the RJ-45 connector via the loop switch 216 and the primary winding of the isolating transformer 214. The secondary winding of the isolation transformer 214 is connected via the operating amplifiers 210 and 212 to the RX-In and TX-Out terminals of the data pump 208. The RJ-45 connector's three-pin terminal is connected to the third I / O port of controller 204 with a DIO line 222. The RJ-45 connector 2 is grounded to a zero-volt voltage by pulling the two signal terminals of the RJ-45 connector and is also connected to the fourth I / O line of the controller 204 on a DIO line 224. Single Signal Terminal of the RJ-45 Connector The single sign terminal of the RJ-45 connector is connected via data line TX226 to the TX-Out terminal of data pump 208 and to the fifth I / O port of controller 204. The additional line and ring interface circuits are not shown, but are well known and can be used. An example is a ring that senses a ringing voltage.

The RX-Ιη and RX-Out terminals of the data pump 208 are thus connected to the loop and ring lines (terminals 4 and 5 of the RJ-45 connector) via a suitable interface circuit and facilitate data transmission using a conventional loop and ring interface. The RX-Ιη and RX-Out terminals are also operatively connected to the respective RX and TX lines of the RJ-45 connector. Thus, a two-wire to four-wire conversion device is formed which operatively connects the loop and ring interface and RX-TX interfaces to the data pump 208 at the same time as the data pump 208.
The loop switch 216 serves to selectively connect the loop and the ringing lines and thereby establish a closed or open loop state and the controller 204 controls its operation by a switch which has been omitted from the drawing for simplicity. Although not shown in the drawing, isolation switches can be provided for the RX and TX terminals of the RJ-45 connector, which are controlled by controller 204 to prevent transmission of signals on the RX and TX lines when the loop and ring interface are in use and vice versa. The controller 204 is provided with means for selectively activating either a loop and ring interface or an RX-TX interface, which operates according to the requirements of the connected telephone. However, in the preferred embodiment shown, both the RX / TX and the loop and ring interfaces are activated and operable when modem 110 is activated, and which interface carries the data is determined by the connection of terminals 114 or 134. Preferably, the cables used for the system connect either RX / TX lines or loop and ring lines to the telephone, but not both at the same time.
The data pump 208 has analog data transfer capability by connecting it to loop and ring lines or RX-TX lines. In essence, in addition to selecting the interface standard, controller 204 is capable of selectively operating modem 110 in either analog or digital data transmission mode. This capability is facilitated by the connection of the RJ-45's eight-digit RX terminal and single-digit TX terminal to the first and fifth 1/0 ports of controller 204. The controller 204 selectively deactivates the data pump 208 and activates its first and fifth 1/0 gates to transmit serial digital data through the RX and TX lines of the modem 110 gate 112. As a result, the modem 110 of the present invention may also be used with telephone systems employing analogue data transmission, such as public cellular radiotelephones, but also with systems in which the transmission is digital, such as some digital and cellular telephone systems incorporating their own. modulation and demodulation means for transmitting digitized audio signals.
Connecting the I / O ports to the RX and TX lines allows the presence of signals on these lines to be detected, especially when modem 110 is not transmitting data. Thus, for example, a ring signal can be generated by the radiotelephone
78591-5203 ···· ···································· ·
116 on the loudspeaker line of your device which is connected to the RX line and this signal can be detected by the controller 204 and can initiate a call answering sequence on the modem 110. Such an I / O port connection solution facilitates the biasing of RX and TX lines, and as will be appreciated below, may be desirable for controlling the operation of alternative telephones.
Gate 202 serves to connect a computer 104 and provides an operative connection that facilitates interactive control and data transfer between modem 110 and computer 104 (as shown in Figures 1a and 1b). The gate 202 may be a serial or parallel gate, a bus connector, or other suitable configuration, depending on how the computer 104 is configured to interface with the modem 110. From an operational point of view, gate 202 is connected to controller 204, which is operatively coupled via multiple lines to both data pump 208 and memory 206. The memory 206 performs read / write data recording during the operation of the modem 110 and stores the program operating the modem 110 either permanently or in a semi-permanent manner. Preferably, the memory 206 may include a flash upgradeable memory storage element into which a desired and defined instruction set can be loaded or reloaded, which memory 206 then retains until it is replaced by a subsequent programming operation.
In this first example, the modem 110 is configured for use with a cellular telephone, a NEC P300. However, it is obvious to one skilled in the art that

By designing the cable 114, the DIO line 130 is connected to the specific lines of the bus 124 on the radiotelephone 116 which must be activated to make and receive calls using this 116. As shown, for certain radiotelephones, such as the NEC P300, the number of lines to be activated by the cellular bus 124 may be greater than the number of programmable DIO lines 130 carried by the port 112 of the modem 110. In such cases and in the example shown, the TX 128 line and the RX 126 line can be connected to more than one line of the bus 124, for example through biasing resistors. Preferably, the lines of bus 124 that share a single line on port 112 of modem 110 are grouped so that the signals they require do not need to be generated at the same time as other lines of bus 124 that connect to the same line on port 112 of modem 110. Alternatively, if such grouping is not feasible, the TX 128 line in particular may be used to preload a line of the cellular bus 124, which must be maintained at a high level during data transmission. The TX 128 line can then be maintained at a high level during periods of non-transmission. In many cases, dropping the TX 128 line level of the transmitter to a low low level during data transmission cannot adversely affect the operation of the cellular bus 124, since its internal capacity may prevent the additional biased line in the cellular bus from

- 31 to become untensioned due to the tilting of the TX 128 transmission line.
The various lines of the 118 connectors of the NEC P300 cellular telephone are described in general terms only, but are sufficient to understand the present invention. It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the structure and programming of the system of the present invention should be designed to work with any particular alternative telephone system, and consideration should be given to the bus interface specifications provided by the manufacturer of the specified alternative telephone. For example, the specification for the NEC P300 cellular telephone was developed by NEC America under the name TR5E-800-21A data / audio interface specification, which specifies precisely the sequences and characteristics that can be controlled externally and the content of the specification. is known in the context of this application. The signals and their order are to be varied depending on the manufacturer and type of telephone used and are not part of the present invention.
3 as an example. In the embodiment, the RX pin 8 is connected to the SPK pin 2, which is the audio output or external speaker connector of the bus 124. The DIO contact 6 is coupled to the SCK contact 11, which carries a serial clock signal that is tapped from high to low by either the telephone or an external device to indicate when there is valid data on DATA pin 4. can be tensioned to deactivate the microphone and earpiece of the 116 device. The level of BUSY pin 10 can be raised and lowered to indicate whether bus 124 is currently accessible or not. The DATA pin 4 is a bidirectional serial digital data line capable of transmitting and receiving signals that can indicate the status of the device 116 and initiate operations such as call initiation by external control. TXAF pin 8 is a tone frequency signal input that receives analog microphone signals.
Operation of modem 110 for making a call, transmitting and receiving data using the NEC P300 cellular telephone is described below, based on the flowchart of Figure 4. The flowchart of Fig. 4 shows the steps taken by the program routine stored in memory 206 and by the controller 204 in response to a program start signal sent from the computer 104 through port 202. The program routine you use can be designed to be tailored specifically to the NEC P300, but you can use a generalized program in combination with a nameplate that provides matching and sketching information for the NEC P300, allowing a generalized program to work with the NEC P300 as described below.
FIG. 4 illustrates the steps that the modem program 110 performs when calling and transmitting data using an alternate telephone network device. These steps are shown with particular reference to Figure 3
78591-5203 • · · · · · · «* ·· · · ··· as an example! which utilizes 116 devices of the NEC P300 cellular telephone system as an alternative telephone network device. First, in step 302, modem 110 confirms that device 116 is connected to it and is operational. One or more lines of modem 110 port 112 (see Figure 3). FIG. 2) can be monitored by the controller 204 to determine if the cable 114 is properly connected and connects the modem 110 to the device 116. Modem 110 can determine if device 116 is ready to receive control commands by sensing the status of BUSY line of device 116. The low signal level on the BUSY line indicates that the radio 116 is not receiving instructions.
Once the modem 110 has determined that the device 116 is properly connected and ready to make a call for data transmission, the modem 110 disables the microphone and earpiece of the device 116, as shown in step 4 of Figure 4. The microphone of the device 116 is switched off so that ambient noise interferes with data transmission. The handset of the handset 116 is also switched off and the user does not have to listen to the sound of the data carrier and / or the modulated data signal through the handset of the handset 116. In the embodiment associated with the NEC P300, the microphone and the listener are disabled by pulling the RX receiving line 126 to +5V DC using the first 1/0 gate of the control connector 204 and the TX 128 data line +5 V
78591-5203, such that a high level is connected to the second I / O port of the controller 204. Switching RX and TX lines to +5V DC switches a high level signal to the SPK, HFRAST, and TXAF lines in the NEC P300, which turns off the microphone and headset while activating the audio signal to the 118 connector.
Step 300 shows that the modem program 110 then adjusts the audio output level of the data pump 208 to an appropriate level for analogue reception and transmission on the receive RX line 126 and the data transmission TX line 128. For the NEC P300 cellular radiotelephone, it is preferable to set the tone level to -28dB. Other cellular radiotelephones or other types of alternative telephones may require different frequency levels. Since the data pump 208 is capable of controlling its own tone frequency, as a result of a program-defined command from the controller 204, the modem 110 can be used with a variety of alternative telephones. If this alternate telephone has its own modulating and demodulating units and is similar to the data pump 208, then modem 110 can transmit and receive digital signals via the RX and TX lines using the 1/0 ports of controller 204 as previously described. . If operation in such a mode is required, the data pump 208 sets the audio signal level to zero, i.e., the data pump 208 shuts down. If the connected equipment requires a lower frequency than that of a

208 range of the signal provided by the data pump, the cable receiving cable 114 can be used to reduce the output voltage
A resistor can be inserted into the RX 126 line.
After optimizing the functions of the modem 110 for the specified alternative telephone, the modem 110 outputs the control signals for initiating a telephone call, as indicated by step 308 of the flowchart of FIG. The instructions are transmitted by assigning specific functions to the 130 DI0 lines, depending on the type of alternative telephone being used. In the case that the device 116 is an NEC P300 cellular radiotelephone, the programmable DIO lines 130 are connected to the SCK, BUSY and DATA lines in the bus 124 of the device 116. Obviously, the program-controlled function of the DIO lines 130 is selected depending on the characteristics of the alternative telephone being used. In addition to the required connections, the exact signals (and signal timing) transmitted to the alternate telephone to create the desired operations are determined on the basis specified by the manufacturer of the type of alternative telephone for interface specifications. For the NEC P300 cellular radiotelephone, the dialing instructions are transmitted in accordance with the NEC DATA / AUDIO Interface Specification referred to above. Generally, for the NEC P300 Cellular Cellular Network 116, the modem 110 generates a dial command that lowers the BUSY line to take control of the bus and then sends the command in serial digital format to the DATA line and gives a scheduling clock.
78591-5203 ··· «·« «« · · VV «· · · · · · ········································································· ··· to the SCK line for serial data transmission. Typically, dialing instructions take the form of a keystroke emulation instruction obtainable from a set of alternative telephone system instructions. For example, using a NEC P300 as a cellular radiotelephone network device 116 to dial a 555-1234 phone number, the modem 110 provides a DATA line emulation which starts with 5 digits and ends with 4 digits. Modem 110 then sends a command to the DATA line mimicking the send button of device 116. As a result, the device 116 performs the operations that would be performed if a user pressed the number on the keyboard and then press send, and as a result, a call to the specified phone number would be initiated.
In the next step 310 of the flowchart of FIG. 4, the modem 110 determines whether the connection is established to the selected telephone number. You make this determination by receiving status information from an alternative type of phone. For NEC P300 116, call status information is returned to the modem 110 over the DATA line. If the alternate device is not capable of providing detailed status information, the modem 110 may also operate under the assumption that the connection is established and wait for the carrier to appear on the RX126 line issued by the appropriate modem on the called telephone number. After a business time, for example 20 seconds, if
78591-5203 * « ·
37 still does not receive a signal from the remote location, then the modem 110 assumes that the connection attempt was unsuccessful and operates accordingly. Specifically, in the case of an unsuccessful attempt to establish a connection, the control returns to control in step 316 of FIG. 4, and modem 110 sends an instruction to the alternate telephone instructing it to terminate the call origination attempt. For the 116 NEC P300, the end key will output a mimic command. Then, in step 318, modem 110 resumes internal operation and releases control of bus 116 of device 116. For the NEC P300 116, modem 110 allows the BUSY line to return to a high level and returns control of the bus. Preferably, modem 110 provides the user with an indication that the call has been lost or the connection could not be established.
Once the connection is established, in step 312, the control is transmitted and the data is transmitted and / or received on the TX128 and RX126 lines. This step typically involves receiving carriers, which the modems must detect at both ends to enable data transmission. The modem 110 may participate in determining the protocol to use, including the error correction protocol and the data transmission rate with the remote remote modem. The protocols preferred by modem 110 during setup are determined by the type of telephone system being used. For example, in a cellular system, more advanced error correction protocols are preferred because of the fading interference and interruptions that occur in such systems.
78591-5203 and have to be corrected. Once the connection is fully established, modem 110 can transmit and / or receive data on TX128 and RX126.
The transfer of data can be accomplished by a number of general methods that can be selected by the user. For example, the data transmission program may enter terminal emulation mode, which allows the user to interact directly with a remote computer. Otherwise, the program may switch to file transfer mode when transferring data from a memory or storage device.
The transmission of data continues until the transmission is completed in accordance with step 314, either because there is no more data to be transmitted or the telephone connection is somehow interrupted and this causes a permanent interruption of the data connection. Advantageously, temporary interruptions, such as those caused by interruptions in cellular telephone systems, are tolerated as long as such interruptions do not exceed a prescribed interruption time, which can be determined by the characteristics of the alternative telephone system in use. It is generally preferred to automate the initiation of data transfer calls by controlling the computer 104 based on the flowchart of Figure 4. It is also desirable to automate other other line controls known in the art of modems. For example, automatic call answering can be accomplished when the modem is put in standby mode to receive data calls. • · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · ·. When the modem is in automatic call answering mode and receives a ring signal, the same general steps as in step 4 will be followed. with the exception that the instructions transmitted to the alternative type of telephone in step 308 refer to incoming call and not to call initiation. Although less advantageous, it is possible that modem 110 has only a very limited ability to control an alternative type of telephone connected to it, such as the 4th modem. Steps 308 and 316 of the flowchart of FIG. 2B are optional and the call initiation and termination must be manually performed by the user when using the control elements of an alternative type of telephone. Modem 110 still disables the microphone and earpiece during operation and, after making a call, takes control of the telephone bus and, after data transmission is complete, releases the bus and enables the microphone and earpiece.
In addition to the numerous operating modes that allow selective operation with various types of telephone systems, the modem 110 can also be used with a standard terrestrial telephone system, as described in Figure 5. Figure 5 shows a modem 110 operatively connected to a landline telephone system, an arrangement previously shown in Figure 1b. Terminals 1-3 and 6-8 are not turned on at the RJ-45 connector on port 112 of modem 110. The loop and ring lines (pins 4 and 5) are connected to the loop and ring lines of a standard land line telephone wall jack using 134 cables
78591-5203 has an RJ-11 connector on both ends. To accomplish such a connection, modem 110's RJ-45 connector is of a kind that can accommodate another plug-in RJ-45 connector, but centrally inserts a slightly narrower RJ-11 connector with 6 contacts instead of 8 contacts. Thus, pin 4 and pin 5 of the RJ-45 connector of modem 110 that connects to port 112 are connected to the third and fourth pins of pin 6 of the RJ-11 connector when inserted into the RJ-45 connector.
The control actuator program 204, which is said to be stored in memory 206, defines four different operating parameters for the configuration of Figure 5, as opposed to the configuration of Figure 3. As noted above, the program used may include a separate program for operation on the landline telephone line, or it may be generalized, in which case the program includes a data table and this table specifies the operations to be performed and which lines to use for each operation. in order to accomplish the operations described herein and which fit into the terrestrial telephone systems. 6. FIG. 4A is a flowchart illustrating the operation of the modem program 110 when a modem 110 is connected to a landline telephone system as shown in FIG. In step 502 of the flowchart, the call initiation operation begins by verifying that the terrestrial telephone system is connected and is ready for use by the modem or for making a call. This is it
78591-5203 • · Generally, you can perform the check operation by using the 216 loop switch to turn on the land line (a raised handset) and detect if there is dial tone in the loop and ring lines. This operation thus differs from the operation defined by step 302 of Figure 4 in that no digital data is exchanged between the modem 110 and the telephone system connected to it.
Then, in step 504, the audio pump level of the data pump 208 is set by the controller 204 to the most favorable value for the landline telephone connection. In the preferred embodiment, for the terrestrial communication, the audio frequency level is set to a range of -10 to 25 dB.
In step 506, the conventional circuit associated with modem 110 generates a Multi Frequency Dual Telephone Call Sign (DTMF) and outputs it to the terrestrial telephone system via loop and ring lines. Such a multi-frequency dual-tone call signal may be generated by a suitable data pump 208 or by a separate DTMF generating circuit (not shown), which may be located in modem 110 and operatively coupled to loop and ring lines. In Figure 4. 308, this call operation does not involve transmitting digital control signals and handshakes over the variable function programmable DIO lines 130, but instead outputs a standard DTMF telephone control signal analogously to the loop and ring lines.
78591-5203
Modem 110 monitors the signals on the loop and ring lines in step 508 to ensure that a connection to the called telephone number is established. In particular, the data pump 208 may be operable to detect a carrier signal emitted by a remote modem on the called telephone number and, upon receipt of the carrier signal, indicate that a data connection has been established. After the data link has been established, the digital data to be transmitted is transmitted and received by the data pump 208 on the loop and ring lines and the loop and ring interface circuit. The data pump 208 outputs modulated signals carrying digital data to be transmitted through the TX-Out contact and receives modulated signals carrying digital data through the RX-In contact. Controller 204 receives data to be transmitted from computer 104 via port 202 and transmits it to data pump 208 for transmission. The controller 204 receives the incoming data from the data pump 208 in digital form and transmits this data through the port 202 to the computer 104. Controller 204 determines which error correction and other protocols to use during data transmission, depending on the computer program. Due to the greater reliability of the physically wired terrestrial telephone system, simple error correction protocols can be used which generate less redundant information and are therefore advantageous for terrestrial telecommunications. As mentioned above, because systems incorporating radio data transmission are more susceptible to interference, fading, tax avoidance or transmission, and other error-prone phenomena and sources of error, they may require more sophisticated error correction protocols, such as pre-bug fixes, different size packages, and other methods. which can be used for alternative types of telephone systems.
Upon completion of the transmission of the desired data, in step 512, control is passed from step 510 to step 514, and controller 204 actuates loop switch 216 to bring the loop and ringing lines to an extended position (hang up) and thereby hang up the call. In cases where the desired call cannot be completed by data transmission, control is passed from step 508 to step 514, thereby avoiding transmission and reception of data and the call is disconnected. In this case, the controller 204 preferably sends a signal to the computer 104 to alert the user to the cause of the call failure.
Because DIO lines 130 can be operated in a variable manner to accommodate different types of devices 116, a single modem can be used for all existing terrestrial and cellular networks, as well as other types of telephone networks that may become commonly used. Therefore, this modem eliminates the need for a computer user to have multiple modems. In addition, due to the standard and generic nature of the modem, it can be mass-produced and commercially small-volume only, as no large number of models are required. The general nature of the modem and the fact that the program stored in program memory 108 can be reprogrammed using the computer 104 allows it to work with new and different types of devices 116 and thus allows the modem 110 to be mounted on the motherboard 104 of the computer 104. An integrated modem such as this can be used
78591-5203 can be made available with newer phones and phone-like systems, which requires a new operating program but does not require a structural replacement of the modem itself. Due to its generic nature, the modem of the present invention can be manufactured in mass dimensions at little more than a land-only modem. The modem of the present invention includes all the complex circuits needed to implement telecommunications. All you need is a phone cord that is typical of a modem and is relatively simple and inexpensive. Thus, the system of the present invention further reduces the costs incurred by multiple network end-users in implementing data transmission.
