Multicast transmissions in IP compatible wireless communication systems

Abstract

A zone controller receives a call set up request from a mobile station MS and before the zone controller allocates channel resources and sends a call grant message (203), the zone controller sends a prompt message to network routers to enable the router network to form a multicast tree (203, 213, 215 then 217). This enables the multicast tree to be substantially formed before the transmission of traffic information begins (211). This is especially useful if one or more of the target MSs or base stations BS has a satellite link to the communication network. In the prior art method, the BSs receive and relay the call grant message from the zone controller, then send join messages to routers who later form the multicast tree (201, 203, 205, 207, 219, 221 then 223).

24 claims: 8 independent, 16 dependent

  1. 1
CLAIMS 1. A method of operation in a communication system including a plurality of hosts, a controller operable to allocate resources for communications to be sent between hosts in the system, and a network of routers operable to route communications between the hosts by multicast transmission, the method including the controller sending to target routers associated with target hosts which are to receive a communication from a sending host a prompt message prompting the target routers to form a multicast tree via which the communication is to be deliverable.
  2. 9
A method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein an originating router receives from the sending host the communication to be delivered to the target hosts of the group and delivers the communication via the multicast tree which has been established.
  3. 10
A method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the sending host comprises a base station serving a plurality of user terminals by wireless communication and one of the user terminals sends to the controller via its serving base station a reguest to make the communication to a designated group of target user terminals served by other base stations and in response the controller allocates wireless channel resource for the communication.
  4. 14
A method according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the prompt message is a standard message in accordance with Internet Protocol compatible procedures .
  5. 16
A method according to any one of the preceding claims 7 to 15 wherein the join response message comprises a standard PIM-SM ( (Protocol Independent Multicast - Sparse Mode) message.
  6. 17
A method according to any one of the preceding claims 7 to 16 wherein the communication is sent via the multicast tree as a packet data communication in accordance with Internet Protocol procedures.
  7. 18
A method according to any one of the preceding claims 7 to 17 wherein the originating router delivers the communication by use of an Internet Protocol multicast address included in data packets of the communication.
  8. 19
A communication system operable to use a method according to any one of the preceding claims the system including a plurality of hosts, a controller operable to allocate resources for communications to be sent between hosts in the system, and a network of routers operable to route communications between the hosts by multicast transmission, wherein the controller is operable to send to target routers associated with target hosts which are to receive a communication from a sending host a prompt message prompting the target routers to form a multicast tree via which the communication will be deliverable.
