Modifying route table enable mask

Abstract

A router (106) routes packets among a plurality of nodes (102) based on entries (210) in a route table (206). Entries (212) in a route table enable mask (208) characterize the enablement of the route table entries (210). The router (106) receives (302) a packet including an indication to modify the route table enable mask (208) from one of the nodes (102). The router (106) produces (320) an update mask (402) and determines (324) which logical operation to perform on the update mask (402) and the route table enable mask (208) in response to at least one of the received packet, the update mask (402), and the route table enable mask (208). The router (106) generates a new route table enable mask (404) by performing (326) the appropriate logical operation on the update mask (402) and the route table enable mask (208) in response to the determination (324) of which logical operation should be performed and the route table enable mask (208) is replaced with the new route table enable mask (404).

10 claims: 3 independent, 7 dependent

  1. 1
What is claimed is:1. A method for modifying the routing of packets in a system (100) where packets are routed among a plurality of nodes (102) in accordance with a route table (206) having a plurality of route table entries (210) and a route table enable mask (208) having a plurality of route table enable mask entries (212) that characterize the enablement of corresponding route table entries (210), the method comprising: a. receiving (302) a packet from one of the nodes (102), the packet including an operation code and an update mask (402);b. reading (322) the route table enable mask from a memory (112) location;c. generating a new route table enable mask (404) by performing (326) a logical operation on the update mask (402) and the route table enable mask (208) in response to the operation code;and d. storing (328) the new route table enable mask (404) in the memory (112) location.
  2. 4
The method according to any of claims 2 and 3 wherein the value to enable is a 1, the value to disable is a 0.
  3. 5
A method for updating a route table enable mask (208) in a system (100) where packets are routed among a plurality of nodes (102) in accordance with a route table (206) having a plurality of route table entries (210) where the route table enable mask (208) has a plurality of route table enable mask entries (212) that characterize the enablement of corresponding route table entries (210) , the method comprising:a. receiving (302) a packet from one of the nodes, the packet including an indication to modify the route table enable mask (208);b. producing (320) an update mask (402);f c. determining (324) which logical operation to perform on the update mask (402) and the route table enable mask (208) in response to at least one of the received packet, the update mask (402), and the route table enable mask (208);d. generating a new route table enable mask (404) by performing (326) the appropriate logical operation on the update mask (402) and the route table enable mask (208) in response to the determination of which logical operation should be performed;and e. replacing (328) the route table enable mask (208) with the new route table enable mask (404).
