The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for producing labels for receptacles, which consist of a shrinkable polymeric material, being predecorated in the form of a sheet, then.
transferred to a receptacle. which is. at room temperature and heat-shrunk on said receptacle. in order to intimately encircle the neck or neck, as well as the closing of said receptacle. ..Preferably, in the case of bottles provided with threaded plugs for example, the retrae10 label hot tée also comprises. before.
In the French patent application n ° 2551/19 filed in the name of the plaintiff meaning the title of Label intended to be affixed to .. a .. neck, .flacon which it closes inviolably, it is mentioned the need to have a manufacturing process and machine for producing labeled bottles. .
Since the nature of the product calls for the contact of a material, a cellular polymer which is oriented for removal under sufficient heat above a glass bottle, which is filled, for example, with food, .of beer or any other beverage, the wrap label is caused to retreat on a relatively cold bottle, without benefiting from preheating. On the other hand, the cellular polymeric material is of a heat-insulating nature, exhibiting a relatively low rate of thermal transmission from the outside to the inside. In the processes of the prior art, such as those described in US Pat. Nos. 3 * 767,496 and 3 * 802,942 filed in the name of the Applicant, the cellular polymeric material is subjected to a heating phase on its opposite surfaces by preheating to a temperature of 110 ° C. or beyond the article to which .is applied. in annu35 form laire the ..matter in question. When the cellular shrinkable material is applied in the annular form above the capped bottles * containing food products or the like, it is obvious that such preheating is impracticable, the bottles having to be at ambient temperature.
40 .. when the removal process takes place under the effect of heat. This requires that the material be removed from the bottle in the cold state by applying sufficient heat to be able to contract said material from the exterior surface. . By doing so, ... the insulating effect of cellular plastic material invariably results in the appearance of wrinkles in the skin. enveloping material during its removal. When the said material is used as a label or for decorative purposes for the bottler the random and uncontrolled wrinkling of the material during the removal process deteriorates the appearance of the final product.
The present invention provides a practical method for applying a hollow tubular sheath or sleeve in a shrinkable organic thermoplastic material, and more. particularly a cellular material, above the collar and the skirt of the. closing of a bottle in the cold state, as well as for the control of wrinkling of the product, in order to obtain a product, of labeling of superior quality .....
better, both from the point of view. of its appearance, that of the point of. functional view. The method also aims to make the product inviolable, and this by partially entering the thickness of the material along a line continuing all around the annular perimeter of the edge of the skirt of the closure of the bottle, so that the uncorking beyond, bottle by unscrewing the cap or manipulation of the latter is visually manifested by the tearing of the label on said line. annular weakening. To ensure that the sleeve-shaped label is firmly attached to the neck of the bottle and that it can be torn on said line of weakness, the present invention allows if necessary to attach adhesively to ' the bottle the part, of the label which covers the neck of this one. In the preferred embodiment of the method of the invention, the neck of the bottle is pretreated with an adhesive. A suitable adhesive for this purpose consists of an aqueous emulsifier which dries on the glass. retaining adhesion properties. The retracted sleeve is caused to adhere to the neck of the bottle in a similar fashion to the action of an adhesive of the pressure-sensitive type, thereby firmly pressing the portion of the label in the retracted state against it. surface of the bottle. A twist applied to the part of the label covering the skirt of the stopper, determines the tear of the label along the partially split line, dividing it into an upper part and into a lower part on the skirt. closing and on the. neck of the bottle, respectively.
The present invention also relates to. a machine or apparatus capable of automatic operation for producing sleeves of shrinkable material from a pre-printed or pre-decorated sheet or web, as well as for assembling. sleeves above the upper ends of the bottles provided with corks and which are manipulated in the mahine · in order to enter into perfect mutual coincidence- The bottles .with their labeling sleeve are evacuated from the mahine and fed into a reheating device applying the appropriate reheating temperature to them, allowing the hot adjustment of the labels on the bottles.
In the machine or apparatus of the invention, the subassemblies allow the following various operations to be carried out: .......
1) the sheet of material is conveyed.through .a.
cutting device which traces a partial groove there along a longitudinal line; .......
2) the sheet of material is displaced beyond a device capable of forming therein;or.crosses. or folds at. . spaced apart intervals, so that each sleeving section cut out from said material sheet comprises two or more plies; . .
3). the sheet of material is then advanced on a feed device which measures a given length of material on a drum surface, while a rotary knife cuts said length of material on the drum into a blank or blank. 'label; the drum brings the front end of the blank into contact with a rotary mandrel. which has a cylindrical winding surface whose periphery dimension is somewhat less than the length of said blank;
4) the rotary mandrel mechanism is provided on its. . periphery of a negative pressure device to hold the label blank in place, while a mechanism actuates the mandrel in order to rotate it around its longitudinal axis in order to wind up the strip of the blank label; several mandrels are supported on a rotary turret of the machine, each mandrel comprising a nozzle-for blowing hot air so as to be able to weld or thermally join the ends of the covering of the blank on the mandrel; hot air is blown through the nozzle which extends over the entire length of the blanking seam of the blank when the opposite ends. (i.e. the front and rear ends of the blank) are. . about to overlap; at the time of entry into f
contact of the covering parts, the heat is sufficient to be able to obtain a thermal seal of the material on a side seam. view of forming a manehôn;
5). a rough guide block is used, said guide block being located adjacent to the path of the mandrels during the rotation of the. turret; - the surface of the. guide block is perforated "-in parallel with ... the path of the mandrels beyond the. drum, feed; a .. .
suction is exerted on the guide block in a sense. ...
opposite the mandrel., and. during the trip. beyond the .....
guide surface, perforated the free terminal part of. the blank (i.e., the portion not wound on the surface of the mandrel). is set; .. 6) a pressure roller device is arranged in the. mandrel path, all just beyond the block. guide, .. to come into contact with the seam of the sleeve on the mandrel in order to compress the heated part of the sleeve and, if necessary, to compress somewhat. the thicknesses, of. covering.of the material, in order to equalize or smooth the seam on the label;
7) the machine includes a device for handling. bottles that. . synchronizes the introduction of the bottles into the machine and routes them into an indexed coaxial position of coincidence under a mandrel; the device à.mandï'in comprises an axial demoulding mechanism which is actuated to separate the sleeve from the mandrel, and then bring it above the. collar and. of. bottle cap, in its labeling position;

8) the machine comprises, in association with the bottle synchronization device, an indicator device which coats the neck of the bottle with a given quantity of adhesive during the introduction of said bottle into the machine;
9) and a control system which activates the various devices in synchronism, with a view to obtaining continuous operation of the machine if necessary.
Although the method and the apparatus described in the present invention relate to a preferred embodiment relating to glass bottles with a heat-shrinkable label, the present invention can also be used for shaping and applying a heat-shrinkable sleeve to a wide variety of items, including, for example, plastic bottles, jars, jars, cups and other containers of varying types and shapes.

In Figs. 1 to 4 and 18 is illustrated a heating device comprising, a hollow angular heating nozzle. area 2.10 ending in a narrow and elongated slot 211 at the tip of said nozzle 210. Each mandrel assembly has a similar slot 211. A hollow cylindrical body 212 is rigidly connected to the underlying surface of the fabric. rotating 172 for fixing the mandrels 149 (fig. -4) .. The central axis of the body 212 is coaxial with the central shaft 154 .. of the machine. The .210 reheating nozzles are fixed radially towards the. down to. the outer surface of the body 212, entering into communication with the radial slots 213 extending through the wall of said body 212. All the slots 213 are at the same height, so that they enter into communication with the outlet head .fixed 170 of the heating element. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the head 170 of the heating element has a curvilinear surface 170a which comes into tight contact with the interior wall of the body 212. The heat is sent to the head 170 via hot air pipes 2.14 which establish the connection between a source of hot air and the lower pipe 170b of the heater. The hot air exits from the top of the pipe 170b, being oriented radially above the curvilinear part of the radial collecting chamber 170c of the heating element. During the rotation of the body 212 beyond the chamber 170c, the heat diffused by the hot air is directed through an orifice 213 and inside the body of the nozzle 210, coming out 'under a predetermined pressure. at the location of the narrow elongated slot 211. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, heat is applied through slot 211 at the interface interval of. material about to be overlapped on the mandrel. 149 at the location of the sleeve seam. The duration of heat application is established by the speed of rotation of. the turret, as well as the duration of the. rotary movement of an orifice 213 in communication with the curvilinear part of the chamber 17Qc on the.
head 170 of the heating element, etc. The heating element preferably operates at a hot air temperature of the order of 150 to 260 ° C. for the treatment of a sheet of polystyrene foam. with a thickness of the order of .0.00375 mm. The heat is applied through the slot 211 of the nozzle in the form of a puff of hot air under a slight positive pressure for a period of between 0.1 and 0.2 seconds. This phase satisfactorily heats the terminal covering parts of the interface of the blank. coiled.on the mandrel, for sealing with hot. .
2C and their connection along a vertical ... seam S such as that shown in FIGS. 28, 29 and 31, 32. The degree of overlap is indicated by the part of the longitudinal dimension S 'in FIG. 21.
After the blank has been wound up and joined in the form of a sleeve, the mandrel moves away from the curved guide surface 220 of the winding control device 215, after which the mandrel is brought almost directly against a roller-, presser- or sealing 225 which compresses the two covering surfaces in the hot state (seam S), in order to effect a rigid sealing of the material at the location of said seam S.
With reference to fig. 2 to 4 and 8, the sealing roller 225 comprises a peripheral rubber surface, being pivotally attached to a vertical shaft 226 extending inside, of a swing arm 227. Said swing arm 227 e.st pivotally attached to a. support 228. by means of a hinge pin 229. Support 228 is rigidly fixed to the vertical upright 150B of the frame of the machine. The support 228 has an oriented leg.
downwardly 230 and provided with a threaded sliding rod 231 extending through said tab 230 and which is retained by a nut 232. A circular retaining element 233 is screwed onto the rod 231 to adjust the tension exerted by the helical spring 234, being compressed on the one hand against the tab 230 at one of its ends, and on the other hand against the 'surface of the retaining element 233 at its other end. The other end of the rod 231 is provided with a clamping ring 235 which is connected to the swinging arm 227 at the location of the dehipped shoulder 236.
It can be seen that the sealing roller 225 is slightly disposed inside the orbital path of the mandrels 149, being able to flex elastically on the spring mount described above. The mandrel 149 is oriented towards the point of entry into contact between the coiled blank 18 therein and the roller 225, so that the overlapping end portions momentarily come to bear against the rubber surface of the roller 225 · When the mandrel passes beyond of the roller 225, the pivoting mounting of the said roller allows the arm 227 to deviate slightly from the mandrel against the bending pressure exerted in this direction by the elastic assembly 231, 233 and 234. This contact action of the roller on the blank in the covering state firmly compresses the seam S of the labeling sleeve, ensuring that a perfect seal is obtained.
With reference to fig. 6, it can be seen that the endless path of the cam 196 takes place around the central shaft 154 of the machine, the major part of said endless path of the cam being represented by broken lines. During the rotation of the turret (canvas 172), the cam plunger 197 forming part of each mandrel assembly is displaced along the raceway of the cam 196. The path of the hinge pin 201 and the shaft end 174 of the mandrel is of circular configuration, as shown by the path N in FIG. 6. The path of the cam 196 is shown in FIG. 6 in the form of a circular line in broken lines. The mandrels rotate clockwise around the central shaft 254 of the machine, along the path N. In the position shown in the upper part in FIG. 6, the toothed sector 203 is moved to its most 27 2291908 advanced anti-clockwise, position it maintains until the mandrel approaches the po.sitien represented by 90 °, sqr what the path of ... cam rallying 196 begins to move with respect to the path N, from which bracket which toothed sector 203 is actuated clockwise, which determines the rotation of the mandrel, when the position is reached. , B, the position of the mandrel is now adjusted by rotation to take a labeling blank at the transfer station .. At 1.'location. designated, by fa reference Β ^, the raceway of the cam 196 prints a winding rotation to the mandrel. Said rotation is transmitted by the toothed sector. 203- which imprints it bit by bit. After a complete turn when the line referenced C ^ is reached. The rotation of the mandrel stops approximately at this point. Correspondingly, the label wound on the mandrel is reheated at the opposite ends which are. .
caused to overlap during the orbital movement between the reference points θ £, and.D ^. While the rotation of the mandrel is stopped during the circular movement between the reference points and E ^, the covering part or seam, of. the label is advanced beyond the sealing roller in order to complete the vertical seam of the sleeve, The state of immobility of the mandrel is. continues beyond the reference point E ^, while the sleeve is demolded vertically downwards with respect to the. ... mandrel and suitable above the aligned bottle below, in the manner which will be described below. The toothed roller 203 is brought to zero, between the reference E3 and the point 90 °, in order to be able to start another work cycle.
As soon as the labeling sleeve is found on the mandrel, it is demolded down on a bottle, in the assembly position for the heat removal phase. The release takes place after the bottle has been brought into a pocket 40, 41 (fig. 2) of the bottle positioning wheel, by means of the star wheel 35 ·
Since the machine turret has a rigid connection between the bottle positioning wheel 38, 39 and / or the upper fabric 172 (fig. 4), the pockets 40, 41 for the bottles are always placed vertically , in axial alignment with a mandrel 149 of the mandrel device. Consequently, the orientation of the bottles by the star wheel 35 brings the latter into a position of axial coincidence on the turret when they are housed in the pockets 40, 41. This occurs approximately on the line referenced E2 (fig. 2). Then, the labeling blank 18 is demolded axially downwards above the bottle 10 and the stopper 11, by means of the device described below.
With reference to fig. 9, 19 and 20, it can be seen that each set of mandrel comprises a collar, demoulder with a C 240 profile which is telescopically disposed, which is normally supported in the most raised return position shown in FIG. 9. The release collar 2.40 is fixed by its lateral boss 245 to one end of a linkage which is constituted by a vertical link 241 and a crank coupling by means of a hinge pin 242. The rod 241 is connected by its opposite end to the movable end of the horizontal crank coupling 243 by means of a lateral articulation pin 244. The other end of the crank coupling 243 is pivotally connected by means of a hinge pin 247 to a boss 246 which is rigidly fixed to the mandrel column (fig. 9) · The crank coupling 243 comprises a boss protruding laterally 248 at an intermediate point between its ends, which is provided with a cam roller 249 which is articulated there by means of an axis 250. The roller cam 249 moves in a cam raceway 241 which constitutes an endless horizontal (circular) path extending all around the machine turret (see fig. 9 and fig. Ί to 3), The cam 251 rises and falls vertically, as it
2É91908 is shown diagrammatically in FIG. 20, in order to bring the collar 240 to the mandrels between a lowered position (demolding) and a raised position (inactive). The cam 251 normally moves the roller 249 along a raised path (fig. 19), as indicated also at the ends in fig. 20. The mandrels move from right to left relative to fig. 20. After the labeling sleeve. 18 is formed. on the mandrel 149 (right-hand position in fig. 20) and the bottle 10 is aligned axially with the mandrel (as shown), the raceway of the cam 251 is lowered in the position shown in the center in fig. 20. The cam roller 249 follows the profile of the cam and pivots the crank coupling 24j downwards (ie anticlockwise, clockwise), pushing down the vertical link 24l . This pushes the collar with a C-profile 240 axially along the mandrel 149, from its raised position or inactive to its lowered or demolded position, pushing the labeling sleeve stage 18 in this direction and possibly encircling telescopically the neck of the bottle and the skirt of the cap, as shown in the center of FIG. 20 .. This represents the assembly position for the retractable labeling sleeve on the bottle and its cap. The whole sleeve, bottle, etc. is then ready to be transferred via the third and fourth star wheels 45 and 48, then onto the conveyor 53, in the direction of the heating device .54 ”An additional movement (from left to right) brings the path up , of roule3® ment of the cam 251, driving the roller 249 and lifting the release collar. en.C 240 profile in its inactive position, for the next work cycle. The operating phase of the release collar for the transfer of the labeling sleeve from the mandrel to the bottle takes place during the rotation of the turret between the reference points Eg and A in FIG. 6.
The raceway of the cam 251 is circular, being produced on the inner surfaces of the uprights t / vertical 15CA to 150D of the frame, of the machine (fig. and being 'pO fixed by mechanical screws 2ÊC extending through horizontal slots 26l formed in a support plate 262 ec coming to be screwed in the threads of the cam 251. The elongated slots 261 formed in the support plate 262 make it possible to effect a circular adjustment of the cam 251 relative to the turret, in order to be able to advance on delaying the time of demolding of the sleeve.
As previously mentioned, the tamper-evident characteristic of ... the label on the bottle is further enhanced by attaching. the lower part of the labeling sleeve below the weakening line 85 on the surface of the neck of the bottle, in order to prevent any movement of the label on the bottle with respect to any movement of the closure. With reference to fig. ί and 24, we can see that the sleeve is fixed to the bottle au.moyen of an adhesive which is dispensed, in the form of a drop on the • surface of the neck, when the. bottle is routed through the star wheel 24. on the supply conveyor 21.. The adhesive is preferably made up of a sticky or pressure-sensitive substance, which acts during the withdrawal phase of the sleeve. Labeling above the.
part comprising .the adhesive, the withdrawal ensuring - a strong clamping action on the part treated with the substance. . adhesive. As an example of an adhesive, an aqueous emulsion can be mentioned which dries to a tacky state when a label is applied to the bottle. The adhesive is supplied to the storage tank of the control device 268 containing a pulse pump and an adjustment system. The adhesive is sent into the flexible pipe 267 which is connected to an adhesive injection nozzle 265. The nozzle 265 is fixed at. placed opposite the neck part of the bottle, by means of a vertical support. 266. The assembly described above constitutes conventional equipment, comprising in combination one. photocell and a light beam which are arranged across the width of the conveyor 21, the control light beam being interrupted by the front edge of the bottle when the latter approaches a first star wheel 24.
When the bottle interrupts the photoelectric control circuit, the valve of the nozzle 265 is actuated in order to discharge a certain quantity or drop of adhesive 269 on the surface of the bottle which is opposite to the nozzle 265.
Each bottle is treated as shown diagrammatically in FIGS. 24 to 26 * After the labeling sleeve has been placed telescopically above the drop of adhesive 269 (fig. 25) and the label has been preheated in the heater 54. (fig. 26) , the removal of the label determines a bond by adhesion between the surface of the neck 14 of the bottle and the interior surface of the label 18 applied to the bottle. .
The control system for handling the bottles, the turret, the sheet of material, as well as the feed mechanism of said sheet, are shown diagrammatically in FIG. 5 * A synchronous electric motor 163 is functionally connected by a transmission device.
force 162 (a belt or chain) with the input shaft l6l of the driving force transmission l60. The output shaft .159 of the transmission is connected so as to bring the control wheel 158 into engagement with the main drive wheel 157 "Which rotates the machine turret and actuates the chucks 149 long. Of their circular path around the tree 154. The control wheel 158 also engages with a wheel 270 fixed to the shaft 132 of the rotary knife device, in order to rotate the cylinder 143. The directions of rotation of the elements of the machine are indicated diagrammatically by arrows on fig. 5-. The wheel 131 of the rotary knife is driven with the wheel 130 on the shaft 122 of the feed drum 121 * The energy is transmitted from the wheel 130 to the shaft 108 via its wheel 273 by means of a cooperating pair of idler wheels 2? 1 and 2/2. The power transmitted to the shaft 108 actuates the rotary sectioning device 106. The shaft 108 also constitutes the input shaft of a positive standard continuously variable transmission 274 provided with an indexing wheel 275 · The rotation of the wheel 275 inside the transmission 274 'in the one in the other direction determines the advance or the delay of the phase position of the output shaft 280. The wheel 275 is controlled by an indexing motor 278 which is actuated by a manual control device 279.
'' ; ·. · I
The power of the transmission 274 on the shaft 280 is transmitted via a wheel 28l which is engaged with a wheel 105 to the traction rollers 98. The roller 9θ acts with the roller 86 via the wheel 104 which is engaged with the wheel 105 to pull the ply 15 through the cutting device 68, also advancing the ply 15 inside the rollers of pleating 106 and 107, thereby determining the speed and the phase position of the ply on the supply drum 121. The conveyors 21 and 53 for bringing the bottles onto the machine turret, then evacuating them out of said turret and through the heating element 54, are actuated by separate electric motors (not shown) at a speed compatible with the speed machine production. To this end, said conveyors can be actuated at a synchronous speed, as being slaved to the main control motor 163 which regulates the production speed of the machine. The star wheels 24, 35, 45 and 48 are actuated in synchronism by any suitable transmission means (not shown).
As is apparent from the foregoing description of the machine, the invention provides a method of producing tamper-evident labeling for receptacles by means of a series of phases comprising the provision of a sheet of shrinkable organic thermoplastic material. heat and pre-printed, said web having a predetermined width and thickness; the web is notched lengthwise along a predetermined lateral position, in order to obtain a line of weakness in the form of a groove corresponding to a predefined height on the labels formed from said web; at the same time, approximately, the web is provided with transverse folds at predetermined intervals in the direction of its length, but not taking the entire length of the material of the label., sections are cut from the web in order to obtain labeling blanks, each blank comprising several transverse folds; the labeling blanks are each wound on a mandrel, with the weakening line extending circularly around the mandrel, the surface of the ply comprising said weakening line being arranged adjacent to the surface of the mandrel that said line of weakness is not directly visible from the outer surface of the label wrapped around the mandrel; the multiple folds produced in the label extend as a whole in the axial direction of the latter as disposed on the mandrel; the ends of the labeling blank are caused to overlap when said blank is wrapped around the mandrel, the covering ends being joined together under the action of a heat source applied at their interface open before joining; the heat source welds the ends together in the form of a seam, the latter being compressed by contact with a roller device; the labeling sleeve is then demolded from the mandrel in the axial direction and downwards, above the upper end of a receptacle which is in coaxial alignment with the mandrel. In the example of the present description, the receptacle consists of a bottle provided with a screw cap at the end of its neck or neck, the sleeve being disposed axially therein so that the circular internal weakening line of the the labeling sleeve is disposed adjacent to the annular bottom edge of said cap; the labeling sleeve fits relatively loosely above the skirt of the cap and the neck of the bottle; said labeling sleeve is then preheated to a temperature sufficient to cause it to retract in intimate contact with the neck and the skirt of the bottle cap, the folds made in the labeling sleeve absorbing any possible ripple in order to ensure the good quality of the label in the retracted state. The label can be attached by adhesive to the neck of the bottle, whereby the unscrewing of the cap determines the sectioning of the label along the weakening line, separating said label into an upper part and a lower part, the lower part remaining attached to the neck of the bottle. A similar sectioning of the label inevitably reveals visually that the bottle has been opened.
The method and the apparatus of the invention therefore relate to the application of heat shrinkable materials to the neck, the shoulder and the cap or cap of a receptacle in the cold state, and this in a practical manner. and highly efficient in terms of manufacturing yield, all of which results in obtaining a label and / or a means of tamper-proof covering of the receptacles, the bottles among others.
It should be understood that the foregoing description 10 has been given for illustrative purposes only and is not limitative and that any variations or modifications may be made thereto without departing from the general scope of the present invention as defined in the appended claims.
