A method of manufacturing a patterned, coloured surface on an object as well as an object manufactured by the method and a paint for carrying out the method.
Abstract
A method of manufacturing a patterned, colored surface on an object of wooden or cellulose material comprises as the first step preparation of the pattern on the surface by removing or depressing predetermined portions of the surface, so that grooves or recesses are created therein. To create, by only one application of paint to the surface, a two-colored pattern in which the grooves have a color differing from that of the remainder of the surface there is subsequently applied to the whole surface, including recesses, a paint which in addition to dissolved dye or dye pigments and solvent, contains about 0,5 - 8%, calculated on the entire quantity of finished paint, inert or non-soluble, fine-grained particles of metal, glass, plastic, metal alloy, metal compound or the like having a maximum cross dimension which is substantially larger than the maximum cross dimension of the dye pigments and is comprised within the range 2 - 200 w, preferably being less than 20 µ. The invention also relates to articles manufactured by the method and a paint for carrying out the method.

Method for coating an object, in particular of wood or cellulosic material, on a textured, painted surface, and in particular a color for carrying out the method
The present invention relates to a method for producing a patterned, colored surface, in particular for an article of wood or cellulosic material, as generally defined in the preamble of claim 1, as well as to a paint specifically for carrying out the method.
Painting and coloring of surfaces of different materials can be performed with colors of very different species and by applying one or more layers of paint and / or varnish to the surface in different ways. When it comes to painting surfaces made of wood and pulp15 material, completely or partially covering stains are often used as paint. In the case of objects made of sheet metal, e.g. cars, the painting is often carried out with a so-called metal lacquer, which contains metal powder and which is then always covered with at least one layer of preferably clear lacquer.
The old method of painting a surface with two or more colors is to paint each part of the surface separately with the color intended for that part (in which case any priming or other treatment of the surface is ignored). Another method of painting a surface, for example with two colors, is to first paint the entire surface with the colors intended for one and then to paint the predetermined surface portions with a layer completely covering the second color.
A rational embodiment of the latter method, which can be used in the case of profiled or embossed surfaces, is to first paint the entire surface, e.g. with an equivalent that does not give off any color to the embossed valleys. The embossing can be made by milling or otherwise making grooves or recesses in the surface. This method therefore requires at least two painting operations.
JP 58-137.472 discloses a method for producing a decorative wood panel having an obvious resemblance to natural wood. The surface 10 is brushed or fluffed so that the summer wood forms protrusions and the spring wood forms recesses in the surface. The fluffed surface is first painted with a transparent plastic varnish, after which a colored paint containing pearl pigment is applied to the entire surface. Before the paint layer has dried, a part of the pearl pigment is given a directed direction and the rest of the main part is removed.
The object of the invention is to provide a simplified method of applying such a two-color pattern to a surface with higher or raised and correspondingly lower or recessed parts, and this by a single painting operation. This object is achieved by carrying out the method according to the invention as defined in the characterizing part of claim 1.
Another object of the invention is to provide a dye of the type defined in claim 8 for carrying out the above-mentioned method.
Thus, the invention provides a first, predetermined hue for raised portions of the article with a remaining or retained surface layer and a second hue for the deeper portions 50 of the article, as opposed to the first hue, and this by a single painting operation.
The accompanying drawings illustrate, by way of non-limiting example, wood fiber boards pattern-painted in accordance with various embodiments of the method according to the invention.
Figure 1 shows on an enlarged scale a partial cross-section of a fibreboard or panel treated in accordance with the invention.
Figures 2-8 are plan views of panels treated and painted in accordance with the invention.
The invention thus relates, firstly, to the pattern painting of objects of wood and cellulosic material, in which case solid wood and various types of fibreboard, in particular masonite, plywood, particle board, so-called MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard), other fibreboards and the like, and secondly such patterned objects in particular a color for carrying out the method according to the invention. Significant areas of application for such objects in the form of panels and tiles are cabinet hatches, door panels, wall panels and possibly table panels, headboards and sides, picture frames, moldings, roof panels and others.
If a clear contrast between the higher and lower parts of the surface is desired, in many cases, especially in the case of particle board and other non-surface-sealed boards, the first step in carrying out the method according to the invention is to ‘topcoat’) to reduce or eliminate the absorbency of the surface.
After any preparatory clearcoating or priming, the surface is embossed or embossed. In this case, in the preferred embodiment, low grooves, which preferably have a considerably greater width than depth, are milled into the surface to a predetermined shape. Virtually any pre-programmed, easily replaceable model can be provided with computer-controlled cutters, which are now beginning to become available. Instead of milling the grooves, these can possibly be obtained by some other chip or material removal machining or pressing, for example by means of a replaceable embossed roller.
The paint for painting, which is suitably a completely opaque color provided with normal color pigments, preferably comminuted micropigments and / or soluble dyes, according to the invention contains a fine-grained powder consisting of metal, metal alloys or metal compounds, glass, plastic or the like. The fine-grained micropigments preferably have a maximum diameter of 1. The inert color particles or powder granules are insoluble in the solvent and are preferably hard, but may also be a softer material. The term “inert” as used herein means that the particles are such (or so treated) that they do not stain with other dyes of the color. When the powder granules are metal, they can be, for example, aluminum or copper or an alloy, in particular a so-called gold bronze. A suitable material for inert, coarser powder granules is pearlescent pigment, i.e. small mica granules coated with a transparent or opaque layer of paint. Such transparent paint layers are also suitable in the case of, for example, a metal powder such as aluminum powder. The size of the powder granules should be less than a few hundred pm. The preferred size range is 2-20 pm, and 5 pm is a good value. The particle size depends on the shape of the particles and its ability to adhere to the surface of the absorbent substrate. For example, the aluminum pigment may be only about 7 μm, while the mica pigment may be 10-80 μm in cross section. In any case, the coarser, inert particles should have a maximum diameter that is substantially larger than the maximum diameter of the Imin color pigment. The amount of inert color particles is between about 0.15ο10%. Typical values are 1-5%, always calculated from the total number of finished 10 colors. The total amount of color pigments is usually between about 2% -25%.
The paint also contains a limited amount of binder. The binder combination is selected so that the binder, together with the finer color pigments, is absorbed in the grooves, but also sufficiently covers the higher, inert pigments on the non-absorbent surface. Examples of binder: Nitrocellulose VF-1, Bofors, Cellulose Acetobyrate 0.05, Eastman, USA. The binder concentrations should usually be between 2% and 25%, preferably less than 10-15%. The depth of penetration of the dye into the wood or cellulosic material can be controlled by the addition of silicas.
The color is thus designed so that the finer color pigments define the hue on the non-absorbent substrate by covering the coarser particles, and the coarser particles define the hue with absorbent portions (grooves or the like) where the finer pigments are absorbed into the substrate. Opacity is provided by either smaller color pigments (micropigments) or inert particles, e.g., aluminum powder colored with transparent dyes, being opaque. In order to prevent the relatively heavy me50 granules from falling to the bottom of the toner container from which the paint is taken, the paint should contain an addition of a plastic product in the form of a synthetic wax (so-called micro-wax) and / or a plasticizer and the like. Instead of (or in addition to) such a wax, a continuous mixture of the color in the toner container can be used.
The following Table 1 specifies 11 test plates prepared in accordance with the invention.

The color is best applied by spray painting or with a jam roller; alternatively a curtain machine or even a brush can be used to apply the paint. All known application methods can be considered.
As a final step in carrying out the painting method according to the invention, one or more layers are best applied on top of a stain or paint layer containing clear lacquer metal powder or the like.
Figure 1 shows a part of a test plate treated and painted according to the invention. Reference numeral 1 denotes a board of MDF or the like and 2 a layer of primer or topcoat arranged on top of the board, which may possibly be without, if the surface of the board is practically completely tight (non-absorbent). 3 is a groove from which the surface layer of the plate and the lacquer layer 2 have been milled off or otherwise removed so that the surface of the groove has become absorbent. The board is painted with a color consisting of two components 4 and 5, the first 4 containing a binder, a solvent and a color pigment having a particle size of less than 1 μm, and the second consisting of inert particles in the form of a color pigment having a particle size in the range of about 10 to 80 μm. Component 4 is absorbed inside the plate 1 in the region of the absorbent surface of the groove 3, but is on the component 5 on the non-absorbent surface of the plate. The component 5 rests on the absorbent surface dyed by the component 4 of the groove 3 and immediately on the primer layer 2, i.e. below the component 4 on the non-absorbent surface. 6 indicates a possible clear lacquer layer on top.
Figure 2 is a plan view of a masonite sheet first painted in a completely opaque color, on which two clear lacquer layers are then applied.
Figure 3 is an analogous top view of a masonite sheet first primed with a clear lacquer barrier layer, after which the groove forming the edge pattern is milled on a lacquered surface, on which a fully opaque paint layer is then applied before the surface treatment is completed by applying a clear lacquer layer.
