A flow cytometer (100) comprising: a first imaging sensor (113) configured to capture one or more images of a flow stream (111) in a first detection field of the flow cytometer (100); and a processor comprising memory operatively coupled to the processor, wherein the memory includes instructions stored therein for determining one or more properties of the stream and generating a data signal corresponding to the one or more properties of the stream. flow, wherein the processor is configured to automatically adjust one or more parameters of the flow cytometer in response to the data signal, and wherein the processor is configured to: determining the spatial position of the flow stream and generating a data signal corresponding to the spatial position of the flow stream, characterized in that the determination is based on data obtained from a system further comprising: a second imaging sensor (120) configured to detect the position of the flow stream in a second detection field that is oriented substantially orthogonally in an XY plane orthogonal to the axis of the flow stream from the first field of sensing and for generating a second signal representative of the current position in the second sensing field; a first support stage (116) comprising a laser (117) for providing illumination and operatively coupled to the first and second imaging sensors, wherein the first stage is configured to automatically adjust positions in the XY plane in response to the second signal in addition to a first signal that is representative of the current position in the first detection field of the first imaging sensor; and a second support stage (119) comprising a collection container (118) and configured to adjust positions in the XY plane in response to the first signal.
