Systems and methods for processing mixed solid waste

Abstract

A method for processing mixed solid waste, comprising: provide a mixed waste stream comprising at least 10% by weight of wet organic waste having a density greater than 192 kg / m3 (12 lb / cu ft) and less than 2242 kg / m3 (140 lb / cu ft) and at least 10% by weight of dry organic waste with a density lower than 192 kg / m3 (12 pounds / cubic foot) and greater than 16 kg / m3 (1.0 pound / cubic foot), where the wet organic waste and dry organic waste; separate wet organic waste from dry organic waste by size and density using at least two mechanical separators including a size separator (324) and a density separator (200) to produce an intermediate wet organic waste stream enriched in wet organic waste and an intermediate dry organic stream enriched in dry organic waste, wherein the separation includes sizing the mixed waste to produce at least one waste stream sized with a lower limit size greater than 5.08 cm (2 inches) and an upper limit less than 45.72 cm (18 inches) and a ratio between the upper limit and the lower limit is less than 6, and the dimensioned waste stream is separated by density using the density separator; converting at least a part of the intermediate wet organic flow into one or more of a renewable fuel product, a soil amendment, a liquid fertilizer, a compost, energy or a combination thereof using at least a first conversion technique; and converting the intermediate dry organic flow into one or more of a renewable fuel product, chemical compound, energy or a combination thereof using at least a second conversion technique, wherein the second conversion technique is different from the first conversion technique.
