Method for increasing performance of offspring

Abstract

A non-therapeutic method of increasing intestinal nutrient transport in an animal's offspring, the method comprising the steps of administering to the animal a feed composition comprising an algae composition or a non-algae composition comprising omega-fatty acids. 3 or esters thereof; and increased intestinal transport in the offspring of the animal, where i) the ratio of docosahexaenoic acid to eicosapentaenoic acid in the composition of algae is approximately 60: 1 to approximately 1: 1 and the animal is a pregnant sow, a sow postpartum, another species of production animal, a human being, or a companion animal, or ii) the ratio of docosahexaenoic acid to eicosapentaenoic acid in the non-algae composition is about 30: 1 to about 1: 1 and the animal is a species of production animal other than a pig, a human, or a animal companion; wherein the feed composition as the final mixture comprises about 0.01% to about 4.0% by weight of the algae composition or the non-algae composition.
