Internet TV program guide system
Background of the Invention
This invention relates to the internet, and more particularly, to techniques for providing guide information of television programs and services to a user over the internet.
A large number of television channels are available for cable television systems and satellite television systems. Viewers traditionally had to check the preprinted television program listings to determine which programs were scheduled for broadcast on a particular day. More recently, television-based program guides have been developed that allow viewers to view television program listings directly on their television receivers.
For example, the Prevue® channel is a listing service for screen-scrolling television programs, a cable system operator can make subscribers available on an exclusive cable channel. Viewers can tune in to the appropriate television channel to view listings for television programs that are being broadcast at the same time and are scheduled to be broadcast in the following hours. Although the Prevue® channel is a valuable service, the viewer is limited in some way by the passive nature of the service. For example, the viewer cannot see the television listings for the next day or week.
As a result, guidance services for the most advanced television programs have been developed that allow the service provider to provide data from the list of television programs to the user's decoder. The data is typically supplied on the cable television system infrastructure (for example, on a given television channel during the vertical erase interval or on an out-of-band channel). The decoder software allows the viewer to present the listings of the television programs in the viewer's television receiver.
These program guide services allow the user to manipulate television listings by searching or selecting the listings using criteria such as gender, channel, and broadcast time. An example of one of such interactive television program guides is the Prevue Express® guide of Prevue Networks, Inc. of Tulsa, Oklahoma, the assignee of the present invention.
Although passive screen scrolling guides and interactive decoder guides are useful sources of information in the television program guide, millions of users with personal computers have not been able to obtain listings of online television programs. In addition, users have not been able to select various options that allow the user to view promotional video clips, interview segments, audio clips, and other multimedia materials related to a given television program.
Therefore, an objective of the present invention is to provide a television program guide system that provides listings of television programs from a server to a user's multimedia system over an internet communication link.
A further objective of the present invention is to provide a television program guide system that allows users to click on a text or still images to view promotional video clips, audio clips, interview segments, and other multimedia materials related to A given television show.
Summary of the Invention
These and other objects of the invention are achieved, in accordance with the principles of the present invention, by providing an internet television program guide system. A computer system that has a multimedia library and a data server is used to provide multimedia clips and related data from the television program guide. Multimedia material and program guide data are provided to a web server. The web server provides this information to the user's multimedia system through the internet communications link.
The multimedia system has a processing unit to receive information from the internet communication link and process that information accordingly. The multimedia system also has a video unit to receive television signals. In a first embodiment, the processing unit is based on a personal computer that runs a conventional web browser with add-ons. The video unit is based on a television. In a second embodiment the processing unit and the video unit of the multimedia system the
It provides an integrated personal computer and a television unit. In a third embodiment, the processing unit is in a decoder with internet capability and the video unit is based on a television.
The web server can be located adjacent to the computer system and the program guide data and multimedia material provided to the multimedia system via the internet. Alternatively, the web server can be located at an input end of the cable system. When the web server is located at the input end of the cable system, program guide data and other multimedia materials can be provided to the web server via a satellite link. Program guide data and multimedia material are provided to the multimedia system over an internet communication link.
The television program guide and related multimedia information data is preferably provided to the user's multimedia system in the form of one or more web pages. As such distribution allows the use of the widely adopted hypertext transfer protocol (http) and emerging web standards, a user with a personal computer can access the information using a commonly available web browser software. As the information in the program guide is distributed on the internet, the user can access this information in remote locations. For example, the user can access the guide service of television programs while traveling by car, bus, train, or plane, from a hotel room or a work meeting, from a personal computer at work, or in Any suitable environment where there is an internet link. In all distributions (the user is accessing the program guide service from home or from a remote location), the system benefits from the use of established internet protocols and standards.
In addition, since the Internet TV program guide is provided as a website that has several linked web pages, the service provider can easily add or remove features of the service, without directly affecting the user's hardware and software.
The use of a website platform also allows a wide range of service options to be provided. In particular, numerous media formats (animation, full motion video, sound, still images, and text) are supported and can be interconnected using various built-in hypertext transfer protocol links.
Additional features of the invention, their nature and various advantages will be more apparent from the accompanying drawings and the following detailed description of the preferred embodiments.

Detailed Description of Preferred Embodiments
A guide system of the Internet television programs 10 is shown in Figure 1. The information of the television programs is stored in the media library 12 and the data server 14. The media library 12 preferably contains a series of read-only memory discs on compact disc (CD-ROM), digital video discs (DVD), or other media suitable for storing multimedia content. Media library 12 contains clips of television programs and related interviews and summaries. The information of the television programs stored in the media library 12 is mainly based on video. The data server 14 maintains various information databases of the television programs. For example, data server 14 may have a remote media database that contains video descriptions in media library 12. The data server 14 may also have a database containing information on conventional titles, a pay-per-view database containing information regarding pay-per-view events, and a database of programming information. The data server 14 may have a cable system operator database containing channel organizations, information on the operator's time zone, weather data for the operator region, data on zip codes in the operator area of the cable system, etc. Data server 14 can support other databases, as desired. The information of the television programs on the data server 14 is mainly in non-video formats.
The media library 12 and the data server 14 are interconnected with the streaming server 16 via internal network 18. The media library 12, the data server 14, the network 18, and the streaming server 16 make up the computer system 19. The information of the television programs may be stored on the data server 14 in a relationship database format and may be stored on the transmission server 16 in an object-oriented database format. A construction process implemented in the C ++ programming language can be used to periodically construct (for example, once a day) a temporary data series of television program information (for example, a seven-day data series at one month) for storage on the transmission server 16. The transmission server 16 also receives information for the guide service of internet television programs such as weather data, sports results, etc., by entering data 17.
The information of the television programs and related data can be transferred from the transmission server 16 to the web server 20 via the communication line 22. The communication line 22 can be part of an internal network or can be a conventional exclusive communication line . The web server 20 can be connected to the internet 24 via the communication link 26. Communication link 26 is preferably a telephone line or other suitable internet communication path.
If the transmission server 16 and the web server 20 are different devices, as shown in Figure 1, the transmission server 16 can be used as a common data processing facility for other applications that use the program data type of television stored in the transmission server 16. If desired, the functions of the transmission server 16 and the web server 20 can be integrated into a signaling machine.
The web server 20 uses conventional protocols such as TCP / IP (Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol) and the hypertext transfer protocol to make the television program information available on the Internet 24 for users in systems multimedia 28, 30, and 32 through communication links 34, 36, and 38. Communication links 34, 36, and 38 are internet links formed from telephone lines, radio-frequency (RF) links, cable modem links, satellite links, combinations of links such as these, or any other path of proper internet communication.
The multimedia system 28 has a personal computer 40 and can have television 42. Certain features of the program guide require that personal computer 40 be able to control television 42 via link 41, which can be, for example, a link Infrared communication Link 41 allows personal computer 40 to tune television 42 using control signals. Television 42 receives television signals from input 44. The television signals received by input 44 and the other television signal inputs shown in Figures 1-3 may be provided by cable television, satellite television, broadcast television, a combination of said sources, or any other suitable source of television programming signals. Internet access for the multimedia system 28 is provided via the internet communication link 34.
The multimedia system 30 has an integrated personal computer and television 46, such as the Gateway 2000 Destination® PC-TV hybrid available at Gateway 2000 Inc. of North Sioux City, South Dakota. Television signals are provided at input 48. Internet access is provided through the internet communication link
36.
The multimedia system 32 has an internet-capable decoder 50. The decoder 50 can use the World Online Corporation TV Online® decoder application software, which can be implemented in decoders such as the Hatboro General Instrument Corporation CFT-2200® , Pennsylvania and the Scientific Atlanta 8600x® of Atlanta, Georgia. The decoder 50 receives television signals through input 52. Internet access is provided through the internet communication link 38. Video presentation signals containing television and internet information are provided to television 54 on line 56.
During the operation of the system 10, certain data processing functions, such as user-initiated searches and rankings, are typically performed on the web server 20. If desired, said functions can be performed on a suitable data processing component in multimedia systems 28, 30, and 32.
Certain functions of the television guide only require that multimedia systems 28, 30, and 32 contain web browsing capabilities. Other functions require television synchronization and video recording capabilities. Figure 2 shows a generalized multimedia system distribution that is capable of supporting controlled television tuning and video recording, if desired. As shown in Figure 2, the multimedia system 58 has a processing unit 60, which preferably contains a memory for storing instructions and a microprocessor for executing the instructions. The processing unit 60 accesses the internet via the internet link 62. The video unit 64, which can be connected to the processing unit 60 by the communication line 66 contains the recording unit 68, the tuner 70, and the monitor 72. Television signals are received at input 74.
The tuner 70 is used to select television programs among the television signals at input 74 for viewing or recording. The tuner 70 can be controlled in the direction of the control signals provided by the processing unit 60 over the communication link 66. Television signals and internet information can be viewed using the monitor 72. The recording unit 68 allows the user to make videotape recordings of the television programs. The recording unit 68 can also be controlled by control signals of the processing unit 60.
The operation of the processing unit 60 is determined based on the execution of the instructions stored in the memory in the processing unit 60 and in the control inputs received from the user via the user interface 76. Suitable user interfaces include Manual infrared remote controls, keyboards, indication devices, and voice recognition devices.
Multimedia systems such as multimedia system 58 of Figure 2 can be used instead of multimedia systems 28, 30, and 32. Alternatively, systems such as systems 28, 30, and 32 can be modified to incorporate features such as those of the multimedia system shown 58. For example, if it were desired to provide a multimedia system with circuitry to manipulate video recording, video recording units (such as recording unit 68) could be provided on systems such as multimedia systems 28, 30, and 32. In addition, in systems such as system 58, certain components may be used more than once (for example, tuner 70 may be contained both within the television component and in a video tape recorder component in system 58).
Regardless of the specific configuration of the multimedia systems used in the system 10, the user of said multimedia system has the ability to access the information of the television program guide on the web server 20. Many of the service features of Online program guides are available using multimedia systems with the capabilities of a modern personal computer (desktop or laptop). If it is desired to use certain features of the program guide that depend on the control of a tuner or recording unit, the multimedia system must also have the ability to tune in a desired television program among the various television programs provided in inputs 44, 48, 52, and 74 and should have the ability to record that program automatically, under the command control of the processing unit 60. Additional features can also be implemented in the multimedia system
58.
Another configuration that can be used for an Internet television program guide system is shown in Figure 3. As shown in Figure 3, the Internet television program guide system has a media library 80 and a data server 82. Media library 80 contains clips of television programs, interviews, and summaries. The information of the television programs stored in the media library 80 is primarily video. The data server 82 contains databases of the information of the
TV shows. For example, the data server 82 may have a database containing descriptions of videos in the media library 80. The data server 82 may also have databases containing information about program titles, paid events by vision, and television program schedules. The data server 82 may have a cable system operator database containing channel organizations, information on the operator's time zone, weather data for the operator region, data on zip codes in the operator area of the cable system, etc. Data server 82 can also support other databases. The information of the television programs on data server 82 is mainly in formats other than video.
The media library 80 and the data server 82 are interconnected with the streaming server 84 via the internal network 83. The media library 80, the data server 82, and the internal network 83 make up the computer system 87. The information of the television programs can be stored on the data server 82 in a relationship database format and can be stored on the transmission server 84 in an object-oriented database format. A construction process implemented in the C ++ programming language can be used to periodically construct (for example, once a day) a temporary data series of television program information (for example, a seven-day data series at a month) for storage on the transmission server 84. The transmission server 84 also receives information for the guide service of internet television programs such as weather data, sports results, etc., by entering data 85.
A web server 86 is provided at each input end of the cable system 88. The input end of the cable system 88 has additional components (not shown) to distribute the cable television signals to customers in the service area that surround the inlet end 88. Providing web server 86 in a location that is relatively close to users allows users to provide information on television programs effectively.
The information of the television programs (including video clips and associated television program data) is transmitted from the transmission server 84 to each input end of the cable system 88 via the satellite uplink 90 and the satellite downlink 92 . Each web server 86 uses the TCP / IP internet protocol to make television program information available to users on multimedia systems 94, 96, and 98 through the respective communication links 100, 102, and 104. Communication links 100, 102, and 104 are internet links formed from telephone lines, radio-frequency (RF) links, cable modem links, satellite downlinks, combinations of these, or any other communication path of adequate internet. Although illustrated as direct links between multimedia systems 94, 96, and 98 and web server 86, communication links 100, 102, and 104 may be internet paths that pass through extensive parts of the internet.
The multimedia system 94 has a personal computer 106 and can have a television 108. The television 108 receives television signals from the input 110. Access to the web server 86 is provided via the internet communication link 100.
The multimedia system 96 has an integrated personal computer and a television 112, such as the PC-TV Gateway 2000 Destination hybrid. Television signals are provided at input 114. Access to web server 86 is provided via internet communication link 102.
The multimedia system 98 has an internet-capable decoder 116 such as the TV Online® decoder. Decoder 116 receives television signals through input 118. Access to web server 86 is provided via internet communication link 104. Video presentation signals containing television and internet information are provided to television 120 by line 122.
The system hardware shown in Figures 1-3 to provide internet services for television program guidance is illustrative and other suitable hardware distributions may be used, if desired. Regardless of the particular hardware system used, however, the present invention preferably involves providing guide services of television programs and features to users over the Internet in the form of multiple web pages using the hypertext transfer protocol (http ) conventional. In the system of Figure 1, the web pages and associated program guide features (such as search, etc.) are provided using the web server 20. In the system of Figure 3, the web pages and features Associates are provided using web server 86.
Since television program guide services are provided using web pages, program guide services can be accessed using conventional web browsers operating in the appropriate processing unit in a user's multimedia system. For example, in the multimedia system 58 of Figure 2, a web browser can be implemented using the processing unit 60. Suitable web browsers include the Internet Explorer web browser from Microsoft Corporation of Redmond, Washington and the
Netscape Navigator® web browser from Netscape Communications Corporation of Mountain View, California. These web browsers support the viewing of various types of multimedia content, such as video photos (JPEG or GIF files) and video and audio clips (AVI, MOV, and MPG files). If desired, certain of these multimedia support functions may be provided as web browser add-ons (ie, special software modules designed to enhance the features of a web browser application). A video player add-on suitable for MOV files is the Quicktime® application from Apple Computer, Inc. of Cupertino, California. AVI and MPG files (or MPEG - Motion Picture Expert Group) can be played using the Microsoft Corporation ActiveMovie® application.
An illustrative welcome page 124 is shown for the guide service of the television programs of the present invention in Figure 4. (A site map is shown in Figure 34.) The web browser function keys 126 help the Multimedia system user 58 to navigate through material web pages such as welcome page 124. Users can also navigate by clicking on an image or a text element highlighted with the cursor 142, which can be controlled by an indicating device such as a mouse or trackball. Other distributions can be used to select links if supported by the user interface 76 provided in the multimedia system 58. The web browser function keys 126 include forward and backward keys that allow the user to navigate back and forth along the navigation track. The web browser function keys 126 are not shown in the other figures, but are shown in Figure 4 to illustrate the types of function keys that are available with a conventional web browser.
Welcome page 124 may contain identification logos 128 (which may be, for example, US marks). Identification logos 128 allow a user to quickly associate a service provider, such as the assignee of the present invention, Prevue Networks, Inc. of Tulsa, Oklahoma, with the Internet television program guide service. If desired, welcome page 124 may contain summary instructions 130 that inform the user of some of the features available with the service. Other web pages (not shown) may contain links that indicate welcome page 124.
Ads 132 and 134 allow a service provider to generate revenue from third parties who wish to advertise products using the Internet TV program guide system 10 (figure 1) or 78 (figure 3). Ads 132 and 134 may be video photos, may be animated, or may include full motion video. Audio material can also be associated with ads 132 and 134. For example, supplementary audio information may be provided when a user clicks on ad 132 or 134. If desired, ads 132 and 134 can be linked to websites provided by advertisers. Ads 132 and 134 that are presented can be recycled periodically (for example, once every few seconds) through different ads for different advertisers.
An important aspect of the guide service of internet television programs provided by system 10 (figure 1) and system 78 (figure 3) refers to listings of online television programs and information about upcoming films and events special. Several options can be presented to the user regarding the type of online information that is available. For example, the user may be presented with the opportunity to select between the option of going to local 136, the option of going to national 138, and the option of going to satellite 140. Additional features of the service can be accessed after the user has selected one of these options.
If the user wishes to select the option of going to local 136, the user can be asked to enter the zip code for the local area of interest in box 144. If the service is available, the program guide system links the user with a website of the appropriate local system operator based on zip code information. If desired, the user can select a local area by entering information such as the name of a cable system operator, the name of a city, the international country and city information, etc. Another way in which the user can select a local service area of interest is by using a map-based graphical user interface. As shown in Figure 5, the map of the United States 146 may be presented to the user. The user selects a state of interest using cursor 142. If necessary, additional maps are provided containing higher levels of detail, each allowing the user to make additional geographical selections. Finally, a local map is presented to the user (for example, a map that allows the user to select among several available cable system operators). On map 148 of Figure 6, the user can select from three available cable system operator regions: region 1, region 2, and region 3.
If a local service is not available, a web page such as the non-service page 150 of Figure 7 can be provided to the user, in which the user is informed that the local service is currently not available in the area selected by the user. The serviceless page 150 may provide the user with the opportunity to submit the user's email address, cable provider information, local zip code information, and comments. The information provided by the user can be used by the operator of the television program guide system to request the participation of local non-participating cable operators.
If no local service is available, the user may also be provided with a new election page 152, as shown in Figure 8. The newly elected page 152 provides the user with another opportunity to select the option to go to national 138 or the option to go to satellite 140. In addition, the newly chosen page 152 provides the user with the option of selecting a city 154, which is associated with a less restrictive set of program information than the option of going to local 136 (Figure 4). With the option to select a city 154, the user can select a desired city using the arrow key 156 (or alternatively, he could write the name of the city directly in box 158). After entering the desired city, the city information is sent to the system by clicking on the submit button 160. As the option to select a city 154 is less localized than the option to go to local 136, the choice of the option selecting a city 154 makes it more likely that there are a number of listings of programs available to the user. If the service is available to the user in any city selected in the city option 154 in the localized geographic area selected in the option to go to local 136, the registration page 162 is presented to the user, as shown in the figure 9. Registration page 162 may contain instructions requesting the user to enter an email address and information regarding the user's computer equipment. As with many other web pages provided in connection with the guide service of the Internet television programs of systems 10 (figure 1) and 78 (figure 3), registration page 162 contains an identification logo 164 and the announcements 166 and 168.
After completing the registration page 162, the user is presented with a page of the local cable site 170 of Figure 10, which is customized to reflect the local geographic area or city selected by the user. The local cable site page 170 may contain a welcome message 172 that is personalized to reflect the name of the operator of the local cable system.
Several options 174 may be presented as hypertext links to the associated web pages. An image 175 is presented which changes as the user places the cursor 142 at the top of each option 174. For example, the image 175 of Figure 10 is presented when the user positions the cursor 142 on the program guide option 190 Different images are presented as cursor 142 passes over each option 174. The images 175 to be presented are stored as bitmap images in the processing unit 60 of the multimedia system 58 (Figure 2). This technique for presenting context-sensitive images to illustrate the current cursor position on the hypertext link options is preferably used throughout the guide service of Internet television programs.
Various web pages may be presented depending on which option 174 the user selects. For example, selecting the community event option 176 presents the user with a community event page 178 (figure 11), which contains information about the upcoming local community events. If desired, the community events listed may be specific to the type of service to which the user is subscribed (for example, cable or satellite).
Selecting the cable feedback option 180 presents the user with the cable feedback page 182 (Figure 12), which allows the user to send an email address and comments to the operator of the local cable system.
Selecting the cable operator option 184 takes the user to the cable operator page 186 (Figure 13), which contains information related to the local cable system. For example, by clicking on icon 187, a weekly report prepared by the cable system operator can be provided to the user.
If the user wishes to customize the program guide service, the user can click on the option to customize 185 (figure 10). Selecting the option to customize 185 presents the user with a personalization web page that contains guide features that the user can customize, such as channel organizations and gender-specific presentation colors (for example, pink for sports program listings and orange for movie show listings). The personalization web page may also contain user selectable options that control how the user receives reminder messages when a desired program will begin on the user's television. The user can direct the system to provide a pop-up reminder on the television screen, to send the user an email reminder, or to remind the user through a predetermined paging number, etc. The option to customize 185 can be provided in any suitable part of the program guide service, such as on a program guide listing page (Figure 16).
Another option 174 that is available on the local cable site page 170 (figure 10) is the local weather option
186. Selecting the local weather option 186 takes the user to the local weather page 188 (figure 14). If desired, a map-based menu (such as shown in Figures 5 and 6) or other user input distribution can be used to provide the user with the opportunity to select additional cities for which the weather information is desired.
The program guide option 190 allows the user to access the listings of the television programs that can be organized by time, channel and category and can be searched. Selecting the program guide option 190 takes the user to the program guide menu page 194 (figure 15). The movie guide option 192 allows the user to access the list of channels for surcharge and pay-per-view channels, interviews, and various promotional media. Selecting the movie guide option 192 takes the user to the movie guide menu page 196 (figure 23).
The user can reach the menu page of the program guide 194 (figure 15) from the option to go to national 138 (figure 4 and 8) or the option to go to satellite 140 (figures 4 and 8). If the user selected the option to go to local 136 (figure 4) and successfully completed the registration page 162 (figure 9), the user can reach the menu page of the program guide 194 (figure 15) by selecting the option of program guide 190 on the local cable site page 170 (figure 10). The user can also reach the menu page of the program guide 194 (figure 15) by the option of selecting a city 154. Each of these paths to the program guide menu page 194 requires the user to make slightly different selections.
The option to go to local 136 (Figure 4) requires a user to specify a particular local region (or cable system operator) of interest to reach the local cable site page 170 (Figure 10). To get to the program guide menu page 194 (Figure 15) from the local cable site page 170, the user selects the program guide option 190.
The option to go to national 138 (figures 4 and 8) requires a user to select a desired time zone (for example, East, Center, Mountain Range or Pacific). To reach the program guide menu page 194 from the welcome page 124 (figure 4) or the newly chosen page 152 (figure 8), the user selects the program guide option 284.
The option to go to satellite 140 (Figures 4 and 8) requires the user to select a desired satellite provider
286 To arrive at the program guide menu page 194 from the welcome page 124 (figure 4) or the newly chosen page 152 (figure 8), the user selects the program guide option 288.
Selecting a city option 154 (figure 8) requires the user to enter information specifying a particular city. When the user submits the city information by clicking on the submit button 160, the user is taken to the registration page 162 (figure 9). The user arrives at the program guide menu page 194 from the local cable site page 170 (figure 10) after completing the form on the registration page 162.
Regardless of which option is used to reach the menu page of program guide 194 (figure 15), system 10 or 78 preferably retains information indicating what selections the user has made. Withholding this information allows program listings and other information subsequently presented to be automatically customized to reflect user selections.
As shown in Figure 15, the program guide menu page 194 may be constructed of two smaller web pages: a top web page 198 and a bottom web page 200. Top web page 198 contains graphs and options based in text 202 which are common for many different system operators. The lower web page 200 may contain system-specific promotional materials, such as pay-per-view promotion videos 204. Splitting the menu page of the program guide 194 in this way makes it possible to use system resources more efficiently than would otherwise be possible, because the common material on the upper web page 198 can be used for more than one cable system local.
If desired, television channel options 206 and 208 can be provided that allow the user to easily access program services of related television channels. When the user selects options 206 or 208, the processing unit 60 (Figure 2) sends control commands to the video unit 68 that directs the tuner 70 of the video unit 64 to tune to a television channel on which it is You are broadcasting the desired program service.
For example, if the user wishes to tune the video unit 64 to the Prevue® channel, the user can click on the television channel option of the program guide 206. When the television channel option of the guide is selected of programs 206, the processing unit 60 directs the video unit 64 to select the appropriate television signal from the television signal input 74 so that the Prevue® channel is displayed on the monitor 72. The Prevue® channel is an example of a type of program guide service that presents a scrolling list of television program titles with a presentation of promotional videos and advertisements at the same time.
If the user wishes to tune the video unit 64 to the Sneak Prevue® channel, the user can click on the movie guide television channel option 208. When the television channel option is selected from
208, the processing unit 60 directs the video unit 64 to select the appropriate television signal from the television signal input 74 so that the Sneak Prevue® channel is displayed on the monitor 72. The Sneak Prevue channel ® is an example of a type of movie guide service that presents promotional videos of upcoming pay-per-view events and surcharge channel offers.
Television channel options 206 and 208 allow the user to jump directly from an internet-based television program guide service to program guide services provided on conventional television channels. Facilitating this type of direct link is beneficial for the user, because it allows the user to avoid the annoying stages of leaving the internet service and manually tune the video unit 64 on the appropriate channel while trying to remember the correct channel number of the service of desired television.
Options 202 allows the user to choose how to present various program listings for the preselected region of interest of the user (national, satellite, or local). Typical options 202 include option per hour 210, option per channel 212, option per category 214, and search option 216.
If the hourly 210 option is selected, the user is presented with the hourly page 218, as shown in Figure 16. The hourly page 218 contains listings of programs 220 that are organized in order of channels from top to bottom and by Broadcast time from left to right. On the hourly page 218, the programs can be listed in listings of programs 220 starting with programs currently being broadcast. For example, if the current time is between 1:30 PM and 2:00 PM, 220 program listings can begin with programs that start at 1:30 PM. Alternatively, the programs in the program listings 220 may be listed based on a predetermined time interval (eg, morning, afternoon, or peak audience schedule). If desired, the time interval closest to the current time can be presented. Program listings 220 typically contain information for approximately two hours of programming.
Cursors 222 and 224 are used to navigate to earlier or later periods of time, respectively. Web browsing cursors 226 and 228 allow the user to scroll through the program listings. The user can also browse the program listings with the 230 hour navigation buttons. For example, if the user would like to see the program listings that start in the morning, the user clicks on the morning navigation button 230. If the user would like to see the program listings for programs currently being broadcast, the user can click on the navigation button of the current 230. The program listings for different days in the month can be viewed by selecting the appropriate day from the calendar buttons 232.
The user can choose from various viewing options available by selecting the appropriate time, channel, category, or search button among the viewing buttons 234. The viewing buttons 234 take the user to the same web pages that are presented when selecting the corresponding options 202 of the figure
fifteen. For example, channel option 212 and channel display button 234 are both linked to page by channel 242 (Figure 17).
Another component of the hourly page 218 and various different web pages provided by the present system is the program information box 236. The contents of the program information box 236 change dynamically, depending on which program title of the program listings 220 is selected. For example, the user has clicked on the "Primal Fear" entry in the program listings 220 of Figure 16. As a result, the contents of the program information box 236 reflect this selection. The program information box 236 typically contains the program title (for example, Primal Fear), the projection time of the program (for example, 2:09), a brief description of the program (for example, A character ... ), and a description of the type of program or genre (for example, drama film). The program description may contain information about the actors of the program, the director, etc. The program information box 236 typically provides a program rating, such as a star rating (for example, three stars) or the US Motion Picture Association (Motion Picture Association of America) rating for films or the valuation of television for television programs. If the user wishes to see additional information regarding the selected program, the user can click on the look closer icon 238 (or alternatively, anywhere in box 236), which takes the user to the program information page 240 (figure 30).
If desired, when a user selects programs currently being broadcast, the direct tuning button 231 may be presented. When the user clicks the direct tuning button 231, the processing unit 60 directs the video unit 64 to select the appropriate television signal from the television signal input 74 to present the selected program on the monitor 72.
The page per channel 242 of Figure 17 is presented when the user selects the option per channel 212 from the program guide menu page 194 (Figure 15) or when the user clicks on a viewing button of
channel, such as the channel display button 234 on the hourly page 218 (figure 16). The page per channel 242 contains the list of channels 244. The list of channels 244 may be distributed in order of channel number and may contain associated icons 246 for certain channels. A user can click on each individual channel 248 in the channel list 244 to obtain a list of program information based on the selected channel. A user can also click on a graphic or text link to a website on the network listed to hyperlink to that site.
When a channel 248 is selected, a page of the program list of channel 250 is presented to the user, as shown in figure 18. The channel selected in the example of figure 18 is channel 2. On the page of the channel program list 250, program listings 252 for the selected channel may be distributed in order of time, starting with the current time. If the programs in the program listings 252 extend to the next day, the programs can be separated by the data separation bar 254. The title bar 256 contains information that identifies the currently selected channel.
The page by category 256 of figure 19 is presented when the user selects the option by category 214 from the menu page of the program guide 194 (figure 15) or when the user clicks on a category viewing button, such as the category 234 view button on the 218 hourly page (figure 16). The page by category 258 contains the list of categories 260, which can be presented in the form of category 262 icons. A user can click on an individual category icon 262 in the category list 260 to obtain a list of program information based on the selected category.
When a category is selected, the user is presented with the program list page of category 264, as shown in figure 20. On the program list page of category 264, program listings 266 can be be distributed in order of time and channel, starting with the current time and date. Program listings 266 contain the channel information for each program adjacent to the program title. If a user wishes to view the program information for a given channel, the user can click on one of the presented channels. The user is then presented with a list of programs that is restricted to the programs that appear on the selected channel.
If desired, the list of programs presented on the program list page of category 264 may be limited to programs that appear in the next 24-hour period. The user can view the information for later days by clicking on the appropriate day in the calendar buttons 270.
The search page 272 of Figure 21 is presented when the user selects the search option 216 from the menu page of the program guide 194 (Figure 15) or when the user clicks on a search viewing button, such as the search display button 234 on the hourly page 218 (figure 16). The search field options 274 allow the user to select a search field, such as title, actor, category, description, rating. A sequence of search text is entered in the search text box 276.
After the search text has been entered in the search text box 276 and one of the search field options 274 has been selected, the requested search is performed (for example, by the web server 20 (Figure 1) or web server 86 (figure 3)) and the search results page 278 of figure 22 is provided to the user. Search results page 278 contains listings of programs 280 that meet the search criteria specified using search page 272 (Figure 21). For example, program listings 280 in Figure 22 were produced by a search for the "Gibson" text sequence in the actor search field, as shown by the search criteria bar 282.
The user can ll go to the menu page of the movie guide 196 (figure 23) from the option to go to national 138 (figures 4 and 8) or the option to go to satellite 140 (figures 4 and 8). If the user selects the option to go to local 136 (figure 4) and successfully completes the registration page 162 (figure 9), the user can reach the menu page of the movie guide 196 (figure 23) by selecting the option of movie guide 192 on the local cable site page 170 (figure 10). Each of these paths to the movie guide menu page 196 requires the user to make slightly different selections.
The option to go to local 136 (Figure 4) requires a user to specify a particular local region (or cable system operator) of interest to reach the local cable site page 170 (Figure 10). To get to the movie guide menu page 196 (figure 23) from the local cable site page 170, the user selects the movie guide option 192.
The option to go to national 138 (figures 4 and 8) requires a user to select a desired time zone (for example, East, Center, Mountain Range or Pacific). To get to the movie guide menu page 196 from the welcome page 124 (figure 4) or the newly chosen page 152 (figure 8), the user selects the movie guide option 290.
The option to go to satellite 140 (Figures 4 and 8) requires the user to select a desired satellite provider
286 To reach the movie guide menu page 196 from the welcome page 124 (figure 4) or the newly chosen page 152 (figure 8), the user selects the movie guide option 292.
Regardless of which option is used to reach the menu page of the movie guide 196, system 10 or 78 preferably retains the information indicating what selections the user has made. Retaining this information allows program listings and other information presented later to be automatically customized to reflect user selections.
As shown in Figure 23, the movie guide menu page 196 contains the popular 294 option, the 296 movie tour option, the 298 main event option, and the 300 interview option. When the user Select one of these options by clicking on the associated icon, the user is presented with a corresponding web page for that feature.
If the user selects the popular 294 option, the popular 302 page is provided to the user, as shown in Figure 24. The popular 302 page contains images 304, 306, 308, and 310 of the popular programs for the that promotional materials are available. Images 304 and 308 typically contain program titles. Images 306 and 310 typically contain photos of actors. The programs for which images 304, 306, 308, and 310 are presented can be automatically selected according to their proximity frequency in pay-per-view services. The proximity frequency can be calculated based on the number of expected incidents of a given program in a predetermined period of time (for example, seven days). The predetermined period can be started starting with the current date and time, thus allowing a crossing without irregularities of the monthly barrier. The information used to determine which program images are presented is preferably customized based on the selections (local, national, satellite, etc.) that the user has previously made.
When the user clicks on one of the images 304, 306, 308, or 310, the user is taken to the program information page 240 (Figure 30), which allows the user to obtain additional information, such as video clips and video segments. interviews about the selected program. When a user clicks on the pay per view link 312 or the pay per view link 314, the user is taken to the pay per view page 316 (Figure 26), which provides the user with listings of pay per view programs for the selected program.
When the user selects the movie tour option 296, the movie tour page 318 is presented to the user, as shown in Figure 25. The movie tour page 318 lists the pay per view and surcharge channels that are available to the user (based on previous selections). In particular, the movie tour page 318 contains the pay-per-view channel 320 options and the surcharge channel 322 options.
If the user selects one of the pay per view 320 options, the user is taken to the pay per view page 316, as shown in Figure 26. The pay per view page 316 contains listings of 324 programs for events of pay per view. Multiple pay-per-view programs can be listed simultaneously in a grid format or they can be listed as shown in Figure 26 for a selected pay-per-view channel (i.e., channel 35). As with several different pages, page 316 contains the program information box 325, which contains program information when the user has selected a program from the 324 program listings. By clicking on box 325 (or a look more icon near in box 325) the user is taken to the program information page 240 (figure 30).
If the user selects one of the 322 surcharge channel options on page 318 (Figure 25), the user is taken to the 326 surcharge services page, as shown in Figure 27. The 326 surcharge services page Contains listings of 328 programs for surcharge events. Multiple programs of the surcharge service can be listed simultaneously in a grid format or a single program can be listed as shown in Figure 27 for a selected surcharge service (i.e., the Disney® channel). The program information box 330 provides program information for a program that the user has selected. In the example in Figure 27, the user has clicked on "Pete's Dragon." Clicking on the program information box 330 (or a closer look icon in box 330) takes the user to the program information page 240 (Figure 30), where the user can view additional information about the program selected (i.e. information about the movie Pete's Dragon).
When the user selects the main event option 298 from the movie guide menu page 196 (figure 23), the main event page 332 is presented to the user, as shown in figure 28. The main event page 332 lists sporting events and other special surcharge or pay-per-view events. By clicking on an event (for example, event 334), an associated program information page (such as page 240 of Figure 30) can be presented to the user, provided it is available
Additional information about the event. As an alternative, the vision payment request page 336 may be submitted directly to the user (figure 31).
When the user selects the interview option 300 from the movie guide menu page 196 (figure 23), the interview page 338 is presented to the user, as shown in figure 29. The interview page 338 contains images Fixed 340 of various subjects. As with other pages in the online program guide service, the subjects to which the interview page 338 has been presented are customized to reflect the type of service selected from the user (for example, the selection of an operator's user of the particular cable system or the selection of the user of the national service or a particular satellite service). Accordingly, images 340 refer to interviews for movies and other programs currently available to the user. The determination of which interview images 340 has to be available on the interview page 338 may be based on a calculation of the next programs most frequently in a predetermined period of time (for example, in the next week). If desired, interviews corresponding to programs not currently available to the user can also be provided. The user can select a given interview by clicking on one of the images 340. The user is then taken to the program information page 240 (figure 30).
As shown in Figure 30, the program information page 240 contains detailed information about a selected program (for example, the Birdcage movie). The program information page 240 preferably contains image 342, which may initially be presented as a still image of the program title (for example, from a JPEG or GIF file). When a user clicks on image 342, an associated video clip is presented. The program information page 240 also contains title 344, actor information 346, and program description 348. Additional information may include content information 350 and gender information 352. If desired, information about the program may be provided. director, year of release, and other relevant details. Additional information on the actor can be provided (for example, in the form of biographical information and related video clips accessed by clicking on the actors 346).
The interview icon 354, the comment icon 356, and the promotional clip icon 358 represent available services. The user can watch video clips of interviews about the selected program (i.e., the Birdcage movie) by clicking on the appropriate file type option associated with a given service. For example, file options 360, 362 and 364 are associated with an interview service (represented by the interview icon 354). Clicking the 360 file option allows the user to watch video clips of interviews using an appropriate protocol for a MOV file (for example, using the QuickTime application). Clicking on file option 362 or 364 allows the user to view an interview video clip using an appropriate protocol for an AVI or MPG (MPEG) file (for example, using the ActiveMovie application). The comment icon 356 and the promotional clip icon 358 have associated file options (for example, MOV, AVI, and MPG options) that allow the user to watch comment or promotional video clips for the selected program.
The program information page 240 contains information related to the program selected by the user on previous pages. The user can reach the program information page 240 by various paths. For example, the user can select a program from the program listings 220 on the hourly page 218 (Figure 16) by clicking on the desired program title. The user can also select a pay-per-view or surcharge program from the pay-per-view page 316 (figure 26) or the surcharge services page 326 (figure 27) by clicking on the appropriate listing. When the user reaches the program information page 240, program information is provided for the selected program. Icons and other indicators are used to identify which services are available for the selected program. For example, if comment video clips are not available for a given program, then the file options can be omitted under the comment icon 356. Also, if video photos are not available for a movie, image 342 can be omitted.
The program information page 240 contains listings of programs 366, which provide program title, channel, and time and date information for the selected program. In the example shown in Figure 30, the Birdcage movie is appearing on channel 35 (a pay-per-view channel) in three days in the following weekly period. When the user clicks on a pay-per-view entry in program listings 366, the user is taken to request page 336 (Figure 31).
As shown in Figure 31, application page 336 contains instructions 368 on how to request a pay-per-view event. The request page 336 also contains a request box for the telephone number 370 and the personal identification number box 372. The user can make a request for a pay-per-view event by clicking the request button 374. The information entered by the user in boxes 370 and 372 is used to verify the identity of the user and the status of the account. Once the user information has been verified, the selected pay-per-view event can be transmitted to the user's multimedia system.
The way in which requests for pay-per-view events are processed depends on the particular hardware used to transmit services to the user. The verification information of the application and the account is generally sent electronically to the operator of the cable system of the input end or to a request fulfillment processor of a third party involved linked to the system of the input end. The equipment at the entry end automatically processes the request and prepares the transmission of the pay-per-view event to the user. Typically, the input end equipment directs the equipment (such as a decoder or similar integrated component) in a user's multimedia system to present the requested event.
In the system 78 of Figure 3, the web server 86 at the input end of the cable system 88 can be used to receive and process the pay per view requests sent using the request page 336. After processing the request, the Web server 86 may direct the conventional pay-per-view equipment at the input end 88 to authorize the presentation of the requested pay-per-view event using decoder 116.
Similar techniques can be used to transmit pay-per-view events with other hardware distributions such as those shown in Figures 1-3. If desired, after the web server 86 has processed the request for payment by vision of the user, the web server 86 can communicate the authorization information to the processing unit 60 (Figure 2) in a user's multimedia system 58 (figure 2). The processing unit 60 (figure 2) can direct the video unit 64 (figure 2) to decode and present the pay-per-view event between the received television signals 74 (figure 2) based on the authorization information.
The request page 336 may be provided with options selectable by the user to record programs and to remind the user when the selected programs are about to be broadcast. For example, the request page 336 may contain a record button that can be clicked on. Selecting the recording option by clicking on the recording button directs the multimedia system 58 (figure 2) to record the selected program (controlling the recording unit 68 of the video unit 64 with the processing unit 60) when the selected program is is broadcasting Also, the request page 336 may contain a reminder button that can be clicked on. Selecting the reminders option by clicking on this button directs the multimedia system 58 to remind the user of the proximity of the selected program (for example, 10 minutes before the scheduled broadcast time) by automatically tuning in to the desired channel by presenting a reminder message, or issuing an audible reminder. Reminder messages can also be generated by web server 20 or 86 and transmitted to multimedia system 58 via email.
If desired, these selectable recording and reminder features can be incorporated into other pages, such as the program information page 240, one of the pages containing television program listings, or a page presented to the user after clicking on the request button 374.
When a user clicks on an ad (typically an image) on one of the web pages associated with the program guide service, the user can be taken directly to a more detailed ad page. Alternatively, the user can be taken to the advertiser's submission page 376, as shown in Figure 32. Advertiser 376 submission page contains clickable images, such as images 378, 380, and 382, that are linked to more detailed ad pages. Advertiser submission page 376 may also contain an advertiser logo image, such as the image
390. Text bar 392 contains text fields that you can click on, which duplicate the selections available by clicking on the images.
