1. Technical field
The present invention relates to high-density recording media such as optical discs, and in particular to Blu-ray read-only discs.
2. Background of the technique
Optical discs capable of storing large amounts of high-quality video and audio data are commercially available. The digital versatile disc (DVD) is an example of such an optical disc. DVD players and DVD recorders are available on the market lately and have become one of the most popular consumer electronics products.
The subtitle data to be displayed on the screen as characters or logos during the playback of video data (eg a movie) is generally recorded on a DVD in the bitmap format. While the main video data recorded on the DVD is being played back, the subtitle data in bitmap format is read from the DVD and delivered to an external display device such as a television, after a series of processing steps. signal, so that the bitmap subtitle is displayed on the external device's screen. Thus, a user can view subtitles or logos on a television screen during DVD playback.
Recently, the standardization of new higher density optical discs has been under development; for example the Blu-ray read-only disc (BD-ROM). In some respects, an efficient method of playing the subtitles recorded on a BD-ROM has not been established.

Figure 13 illustrates a block diagram of an embodiment of the optical disc reproducing apparatus according to the present invention; and Figures 14 to 16 illustrate block diagrams of partial component embodiments of the optical disc reproducing apparatus of the present invention.
5. Modes of carrying out the invention
In order that the invention may be understood in detail, exemplary embodiments thereof are described below with reference to the accompanying drawings.
For an optical disc such as a Blu-ray read-only disc (BD-ROM) according to the present invention, the subtitle data is recorded thereon to provide the subtitles associated with main audio and video data (A / V). Caption data is either bitmap or text formatted (for example, character codes). In the following, these two types of subtitle data will be referred to as bitmap subtitle data and text subtitle data, respectively. Both bitmap subtitle data and text subtitle data, or either, or neither, can be recorded on the optical disc. Before being recorded on the optical disc, the subtitle data can be multiplexed with the main A / V data.
Bitmap subtitle data or text subtitle data can be supplied from a server of a content provider (CP (content provider) server) via networks such as the Internet. The text caption data from the CP server is transmitted in the MPEG2 Transport Stream (TS) format or Extensible Markup Language (XML) format. A series of text caption data can be sent from the CP server to supply captions for several different languages. Furthermore, another type of data stream such as an audio stream may be supplied from the CP server together with the subtitle data.
According to the present invention, the text subtitle data and the bitmap subtitle data can be organized in a BD-ROM in different ways, which will be described in detail below.
In a first embodiment shown in Figure 1, both a bitmap subtitle stream and a
ES 2 347 660 T3 stream of text subtitles are recorded in a BDROM as a main subtitle and an auxiliary subtitle, respectively. The bitmap subtitle stream is multiplexed with a main A / V stream and then recorded to a main TS MPEG2 clip file. On the other hand, the text subtitle stream is recorded as a text subtitle file separately from the main TS MPEG2 clip file.
When played, the text subtitle stream is loaded onto a hard disk drive (HDD) or other memory such as RAM, flash memory, etc., and is then decoded by means of a word processor. (discussed in detail later with respect to Figure 13). Or, the text subtitle stream can be decoded directly by the word processor without being loaded.
The bitmap subtitle stream is written to a BD-ROM in a transport packet (TP) format, where transport packets have a unique packet ID (PID), distinguishable from PIDs of the main A / V stream. As shown in figure 1, text subtitles and bitmap subtitles can be used for subtitles of different languages such as Korean and English. While seamless playback between bitmap subtitle and text subtitle is possible, whether or not seamless playback between text subtitle streams may be supported depends on the optical reproduction apparatus.
In a second embodiment shown in Figure 2, both a bitmap subtitle stream and a text subtitle stream are recorded on a BDROM such that both streams are multiplexed with the main A / V stream and then recorded as a main TS MPEG2 clip file on the BD-ROM. Both streams are recorded in the BDROM in a TP format. The transport packets of each stream have a unique PID distinguishable from the PIDs of the main A / V stream. When reproduced, both streams are decoded directly by a word processor without being loaded into memory in the optical reproduction apparatus.
As shown in figure 2, the text subtitle and bitmap subtitle streams can be used for different languages such as Korean and English. While seamless playback between bitmap subtitles and text subtitles is possible, whether or not seamless playback between text subtitle streams may be supported depends on the optical reproduction apparatus.
In a third embodiment illustrated in Figure 3, the main A / V stream is recorded on a BD-ROM, for example, as a main TS MPEG2 clip file without the bitmap and subtitle subtitle streams of text are multiplexed with it. The text subtitle stream is recorded as a separate text subtitle file from this main file.
When played back, the text subtitle stream is loaded onto a hard disk drive (HDD), or other memory unit such as RAM, flash memory, etc., and is then decoded by a word processor. Or, the text caption stream can be decoded directly by the word processor without loading.
As shown in figure 3, text subtitle streams for different languages such as Korean and English can be recorded as separate text subtitle files (text subtitle files # 1 and # 2, shown in figure 3) , or they can be recorded as separate streams within a text subtitle file, so that seamless playback between text subtitle streams of different languages can be performed.
In a fourth embodiment shown in Fig. 4, the text subtitle stream is multiplexed only with a main A / V stream and then recorded as a TS MPEG2 clip file on a BD-ROM. The text caption stream is recorded in a TP format, where the packets have PIDs distinguishable from the PIDs of the main A / V stream. When reproduced, the text subtitle stream is decoded directly by a word processor without loading it into memory in the optical reproduction apparatus.
As shown in Figure 4, the text subtitle streams for different languages have different PIDs so that seamless playback between the different language text subtitle streams can be performed.
In a fifth embodiment shown in Fig. 5, the bitmap subtitle stream is multiplexed only with a main A / V stream and then recorded as a TS MPEG2 clip file on a BD-ROM. The bitmap subtitle stream is recorded in a TP format, where the packets have a unique PID distinguishable from the PIDs of the main A / V stream. In this embodiment, a text subtitle stream is supplied as a separate text subtitle file, from a CP server that is connected via networks such as the Internet to the playback apparatus (an example of which is described in detail below , with respect to figure 12).
To be played, the text subtitle stream is loaded onto a hard disk drive (HDD), or another memory unit such as RAM, flash memory, etc., and is then decoded by a word processor. As shown in FIG. 5, the bitmap subtitle stream and the text subtitle stream, each having different languages, can be seamlessly reproduced. Whether or not seamless production between text subtitle streams can be supported depends on the optical reproduction apparatus.
In a sixth embodiment shown in Fig. 6, the bitmap subtitle stream is multiplexed only with a main A / V stream and then recorded as a TS MPEG2 clip file on a BD-ROM. The bitmap subtitle stream is recorded in a TP format, where the packets have a PID distinguishable from the PIDs of the main A / V stream. In this embodiment, the text subtitle stream is supplied as a separate text subtitle file, from a CP server that is connected via networks such as the Internet to the playback apparatus. Along with the text subtitle stream, another bitmap subtitle stream is supplied from the CP server as a separate bitmap subtitle file.
ES 2 347 660 T3
For the subtitle streams to be played from the CP server, the streams are loaded onto a hard disk drive (HDD) or other memory such as RAM, flash memory, etc. and then they are decoded by means of a word processor. The bitmap subtitle stream on the BD-ROM and the bitmap and text subtitle streams from the CP server can be used for the subtitles of different languages such as Korean, English and Chinese, and can be reproduced seamlessly, as shown in figure 6.
Other embodiments of the present invention can be created from combinations of the above elements. For example, bitmap subtitle streams and text subtitle streams can be supplied both from a BD-ROM and from a CP server.
A series of text subtitle streams can also be written to a BD-ROM in various ways, and the formats will be described in detail below.
As shown in Figure 7, a series of text subtitle streams (text subtitle streams # 1 to #n) are multiplexed with each other and then written as a single TS MPEG2 stream clip file. Each text caption stream has a unique PID so that each stream can be distinguished from the others. The single TS MPEG2 clip file can contain the streams of all text subtitles or some text subtitles that need to be uploaded or downloaded.
According to the writing formats of Figure 8, a series of text subtitle streams (text subtitle streams # 1 to #n) are written as individual files, each being according to the TS MPEG2 stream format or either with a non-TS MPEG2 format, such as XML. In either case, each text caption stream is distinguishable and is selectively chosen in reference to the corresponding text caption files to determine the text caption streams to upload or download.
According to the writing formats of Figure 9, a part of a series of text subtitle streams (text subtitle streams # 1 to # (n-2)) are multiplexed with each other and then written as a single TS MPEG2 stream file. Each text caption stream has a unique PID so that each stream can be distinguished from the other. The other parts of the text caption stream series (text caption streams # (n-1) to #n) are written as individual TS MPEG2 stream files without the insertion of unique PIDs.
According to the writing formats of Fig. 10, a series of text subtitle streams (text subtitle streams # 1 to #n) are written as a single non-TS MPEG2 file. Each text subtitle stream can be arranged separately or intermixed within the non-TS MPEG2 file.
According to the writing formats of figure 11, a part of a series of text subtitle streams (text subtitle streams # 1 to # (n-2)) are multiplexed with each other and then written as a single Non-TS MPEG2 file. The other part of the series of text subtitle streams (text subtitle streams # (n-1) to #n) are written as individual non-TS MPEG2 files, separately.
In accordance with the writing formats of Figure 12, when one or more bitmap subtitle or audio streams need to be played together with text subtitle streams, a series of the text subtitle streams (text subtitle streams) text subtitles # 1 to #n) are multiplexed with the bitmap subtitle or audio streams and then written as a single TS MPEG2 stream clip file. In this case, a user can choose to select subtitles and audio in any desired combination, for example, Korean sound and Korean text or bitmap subtitles, English audio, and text or bitmap subtitles. in Korean to practice listening to English, or English text subtitles and Korean bitmap subtitles to have multi-language subtitles.
Fig. 13 illustrates an optical disc reproducing apparatus in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention. As shown, the apparatus includes a reader 11 for reading data from a BD-ROM 10; a source flow switch 12; a memory 13; a Java processor 14; a text caption processor 15; a first demultiplexer (demux) 16; a second demultiplexer (demux) 17; a presentation graphics source switch 18; a font engine 19; an interactive graphics decoder 20; a presentation graphics decoder 21; a video decoder 22; an interactive graphics data switch 23; a display graphics data selector 24; an interactive graphics plane 25; a presentation graphics plane 26; a video plane 27; a background plane 28; and various mixers 29, 30, 31.
The optical disc playback apparatus can be connected to a CP server 300 via the Internet 200 network. The CP server 300 supplies bitmap subtitle streams or text subtitle streams which may be in the stream format TS MPEG2 or in a default binary stream in XML format.
The text caption stream from the CP server 300 may be a multiplexed stream of only multi-language text caption streams, or a multiplexed stream of text caption streams and audio streams. Bitmap or text subtitle streams supplied from the CP server are loaded into memory 13, which is a HDD, a RAM, flash memory, and so on.
The decoding process of the text and bitmap subtitle streams will be described in detail below. A text subtitle stream recorded on a BD-ROM in the TS MPEG2 stream format separately from the main A / V stream, is read from the BD-ROM and can then be loaded into memory 13. The text caption stream is then supplied to the text caption processor 15 via the source stream switch 12 and the second demux 17. The text caption processor 15 may be configured as a component of the Java processor 14 or as a separate word processor, as illustrated.
Based on the text caption stream processed by the text caption processor 15, font presentation graphics data is generated from the font engine 19 and then input to the presentation graphics data selector 24. Corresponding presentation graphics data, for example a bitmap subtitle stream, can also be supplied to the host.
ES 2 347 660 T3 presentation graphics data reader 24 from memory 13 via switch 12, first demux 16 or second demux 17, presentation graphics source switch 18 and presentation graphics decoder 21 . As will be appreciated, the presentation graphics decoder 21 decodes the presentation graphics data. In one embodiment, the presentation graphics data selector 24 selectively chooses one of the presentation graphics data from the font engine 19 (text caption graphics data) or the presentation graphics decoder 21 (graphics data subtitles), and supplies this data to the presentation graphics plane 26.
At the same time, the reproduced background data (if any) is supplied by the switch 12 to a background plane 28, and the reproduced A / V data is supplied by the switch 12 to the video decoder 22 through the first demux 16. The video decoder 22 decodes the A / V data. The mixer 29 mixes the decoded A / V data with the background data (if any). The mixer 30 mixes the output of the mixer 29 with the output from the display graphics plane 26.
In this way, both bitmap subtitles and text subtitles can be displayed along with the main video images. As noted above, both the text subtitle stream and the bitmap subtitle stream can be supplied from the CP server 300.
When a text subtitle stream has been recorded on a BD-ROM in a predefined binary format such as XML, the text subtitle stream is loaded into memory 13 and then fed directly to the text subtitle processor 15 bypassing the second demux 17. Based on the output of the text caption processor 15, font presentation graphics data is generated from the engine 19 and then input to the presentation graphics data selector 24. Here, the presentation graphics data from the font engine 19 (text caption graphics data) or from the presentation graphics decoder 21 (bitmap caption graphics data) is selectively chosen as output. . The output of the presentation graphics data selector 24 is supplied to the presentation graphics plane 26 so that the bitmap subtitles or text subtitles can be displayed along with the main video images. This is accomplished by a mixer 30 that mixes the output from mixer 29 and display graphics plane 26. Also, both or some of the text subtitle stream and the bitmap subtitle stream may be supplied from the CP server 300.
Interactive graphics data such as the menu selector button is supplied from the interactive graphics decoder 20 through the demux 16, and the output of the interactive graphics decoder 20 is input to the interactive graphics data switch 23. Interactive graphics data may also be supplied from Java processor 14 and / or font engine 19, and is input to interactive graphics data switch 23. The interactive graphics data switch 23 determines which input is chosen as an output to the interactive graphics plane 25. Next, the output from the interactive graphics plane 25 is mixed by the mixer 31 with the output from the mixer 30.
The display graphics data selector 24 may be implemented as a switch or as a mixer, as shown in Figures 14 and 15, respectively. To be specific, whereas if the switch embodiment is adopted, a text caption and a bitmap caption cannot be displayed simultaneously, the mixer embodiment allows the two captions to be displayed simultaneously in non-overlapping areas of a screen. Furthermore, instead of using the presentation graphics data selector 24, a text presentation plane 40 as shown in FIG. 16 may additionally be used to display the text captions supplied from the font engine 19. As will be appreciated, this embodiment also uses an additional mixer to mix the output from the text display plane 40 and the mixer 31. In the configuration of FIG. 16, text captions and bitmap captions can be displayed independently of each other.
The present invention provides a recording medium having a data structure for managing the reproduction of subtitle data, and provides methods and apparatus for recording the data structure on the medium.
While the invention has been described with respect to a limited number of embodiments, those skilled in the art, with the benefits of this disclosure, will appreciate numerous modifications and variations from the foregoing. For example, while in some cases described with respect to a Blu-ray ROM optical disc, the present invention is not limited to this optical disc standard or to optical discs. All such modifications and variations are considered to be within the spirit and scope of the invention.
