DESCRIPTION
The present invention relates to machines for packaging items. More particularly, it refers to a packaging machine intended to separate items such as beverage containers and load them into a cardboard container deployed in an intermediate manufacturing phase.
A permanent problem in the packaging of beverage containers, such as cans and bottles, is to separate the containers into groups while the containers move in a high-speed packaging machine and load said groups of carton boxes that also they travel at great speeds along the machine. The high speeds at which the machines operate require that the containers be displaced and segregated so that the danger of the containers falling and blocking the operation of the machine is minimized. The movement of the groups of containers in the cartoon boxes that move quickly must also be carried out smoothly to avoid misalignment that could also result in blockage of the machine.
The cartoon boxes in which the packages are packed are usually fed into the packing machine in the form of flat and folded cartoon pieces, which are opened to create the cartoon box in an intermediate manufacturing phase, with open ends and panels front and rear facing up. Different means have been used for feeding and segregation of beverage containers into groups of the desired number. For example, endless chains have been used that carry protrusions to come into contact and push the containers or containers into partially folded carton boxes. These devices require exact synchronization between the chains provided with projections and the main device for moving the containers and the device for moving the carton box and its use in modern high-speed packaging machines is not desirable.
In another arrangement described in US Pat. No. 3,778,959 to Langen et al., Sleeve-shaped carton boxes, that is, with open ends, are displaced downstream while feeding alignments of containers to a conveyor. adjacent. Devices for the separation of comb-shaped or arm-shaped containers are driven by the adjacent conveyor and extend along the width of the conveyor to separate the packages into groups of them. Said groups are kept in a segregation situation between themselves by the arms when moving the adjacent conveyor by groups of containers parallel to the sleeve-shaped carton displacement device. Guides in the form of rails arranged downstream or in a downward direction followed the machine, help in the movement of said groups into the sleeve-shaped carton boxes. While this constitutes an improvement over other complicated and slow machines, this machine requires a series of container conveyors operating in order to move the containers from the feed conveyor to the sleeve-shaped carton boxes. It also requires that the spacer arms extend across the entire width of the adjacent conveyor to segregate the containers at a point located above, relatively separate from the point at which the containers enter the carton. This, in turn, requires that the separating arms be structurally capable of extending in a hanging manner over the entire width of the conveyor to which they were attached, resulting in a much more important structural device than desired, both as regards the arms themselves. , the conveyor that carries them and the support structure that connects the arms and the conveyor. This in turn requires more space within the limits of the packaging machine than is desirable.
Another attempt to solve the problem is described in the US Patent of Calvert et al.° 4,237,673, which discloses a packaging machine in which sleeve-shaped carton packagings are pushed onto a support surface by rods in flywheel arrangement. Said bars extend beyond the ends of the carton boxes in the remaining width of the support surface and work with measuring bars to separate the beverage containers into groups of a predetermined number and to push the containers along the guides. which lead to the open ends of the sleeve-shaped cartoon boxes. The containers must therefore cross a dead plate to enter the carton box, there are friction forces that oppose a smooth passage into the carton box. The measuring bars, like the arms of the Langen Patent and others, are long and heavy, they require resistant support devices and a relatively large amount of space in which the measuring bars and their support structure can be moved. In addition, based on the linear force and the movement of the measuring bars to move the containers from the feed conveyor to the cartoon boxes, it becomes necessary to provide dampers to compensate the feed pressure to the carton boxes, it becomes necessary provide shock absorbers to compensate for the supply pressure of the containers. In addition, the use of a combination of fly bars and measuring bars makes the process take a long time to change to a different cardboard size.
It would be desirable to use a feeding of containers that does not depend on the pressure or force on the line of containers to displace bone in a downward direction and that does not require a measuring or luminous and elongated bar or similar arm, to separate the containers into groups of numbers predetermined.
The present invention uses displacement devices of the folded carton and separate means thereof to displace an alignment of items to be packaged in a downward direction. Means are provided for driving the articles from their movement device to the movement means.
016 154 of the folded containers, said delivery devices carrying transport means adjacent to the displacement devices of the folded cartoon boxes in order to separate the articles into groups of a predetermined number.
In a preferred arrangement, the folded cardboard boxes are pushed downwards and the article separating devices comprise a cradle-shaped part adjacent to the pushing device of the folded cardboard boxes. Said cradle-shaped part preferably extends upwardly from the article drive devices and in a direction in which it is separated from the displacement devices of the carton boxes, the latter being relatively short distance to establish contacts only with a Only one item at a time. In a preferred embodiment, the cradle-shaped elements for article separation are mounted on a mobile chain of saucers. By means of this arrangement the device separated from articles does not have to extend through the path of movement of the containers that move from the feed conveyor to the device for moving the cartoon boxes as well as in the previously known machines and containers do not slide on a passive or dead plate. In addition, although the separation device occupies little space, making the machine more compact and providing more space for the driving devices of the different moving parts, it is nevertheless capable of separating articles from a series of mobile article alignments.
Other features and aspects of the present invention, as well as other advantages thereof, were readily appreciated from the more detailed description below.

Figure 3 is an elevational view with parts of the machine structure disassembled for purposes of greater clarity of the upper part of the machine of the present invention.
Figure 4 is a cross section following the cutting line 4-4 of Figure 2A.
Figure 5 is a partial perspective view showing the article separator element in engagement with adjacent articles.
Referring to Figure 1A, an unfolded cardboard box 10 adapted for use in the present invention comprises a bottom panel 12, side panels 14 and 16, an upper panel 18 and end panels 20 and 22. The end panel 20 , which is the rear or final panel of the cartoon box when moving along the machine, it is connected to the side and top bottom panels by means of an expiration line 21. Similarly, the end panel 22 is the front panel of the carton as it moves along the machine and was connected to the bottom, side and top panels by an expiration line 23. A short sloping side panel 24 connects the side panel 14 and the top panel 18, while the fins 26 and 28, connected to the side panel 16 and the top panel 18, respectively, are adapted to overlap and form a panel of the short and sloping cartoon box, in opposite arrangement. The end panels 20 and 22 contain folding lines that form fins 30 and 32, while the top panel 18 and adjacent parts of the end panels 20 and 22 contain openings 34 to receive the necks of the beverage bottles packed in the box. . Flap 28 contains locking tabs 36, while side panel 16 contains conjugate locking openings adjacent to fin 26.
In addition to the folding lines 21 and 23, the different panels to which reference has been made are connected between them only following folding lines shown in the drawing in the form of dotted lines but which have not been identified with reference numeral for purposes more clearly
To form a cartoon box from the sheet piece 10, the folded end panels 20 and 22 followed the expiration lines 21 and 23 to the position shown in Figure 1B and the beverage containers to be packaged, such as the bottles B, are introduced to the bottom panel of the sheet pieces by their thrust or direction 40 through the open end of the sheet piece above the side panel 16.
Continuing in Figure 1C, the folding panels 30 and 32 are then folded inward, causing the side panels 16 and 14 to rise vertically. Folding the upper panel 18 down on the necks of the bottles B and coupling the fins 26 and 28 by means of the tabs 36 and openings 38 results in the carton 42 shown in Figure 1D.
While the carton shown is illustrative of the type of carton that can be used in the present invention, it should be understood that this is not limited to the loading of cartons in the manner shown in Figure 1B but also It can be used with regular, open-ended maos boxes. Likewise, although it has been shown in relation to the packaging of beverage bottles, the invention can be used in relation to beverage cans or any other type of items that can be fed and introduced into an unfolded cardboard box or shaped box. cuff, in the same way as a can or bottle of drink.
Referring to Figures 2A, 3 and 4, a packing machine 44 comprises an input feed conveyor 46, preferably consisting of three separate conveyors 48, for feeding items such as bottles B to the packing machine. The conveyors 48 can be of any design ade3
016 154, such as that comprising a series of plates 50 fixed to endless chains 52 for movement therewith. Guides 54, which may be connected to suitable support elements 56, as shown in Figure 4, separate the individual conveyors 48 to guide the movement of the incoming bottles following the substantial part of the conveyor stroke 48.
Referring to Figures 2A and 3, separated with respect to the input conveyor is a support surface 58 that preferably takes the form of separate plates or strips. A hopper 60 contains a stack of unfolded carton boxes C that are removed from the hopper one by one by a suction cup 62 mounted with reciprocating motion and in separation thereof by means known in this art. An unfolded carton box that has been removed from the hopper is displaced from the suction vessel towards the position where the leading edge of said box contacts the rollers 64 that push it and accelerate it in a downward direction, also well known. A wheel 66 mounted above the support surface 58 and rotates so that its chain speed 72. The chain 72 carries projections 70 with certain spacing from each other and is mounted so that its upper branch is just below the surface 58 and such that the projections 70 extend, above the surface 58 through grooves or adequate spaces of the support surface. Just down the wheel mentioned below the support surface 58, there is an adjustment chain 71 that carries protrusions 73 at certain intervals so that the protrusions 73 can come into contact with the bottom surface of a box unfolded sheet that moves over said adjustment chain.
By moving the unfolded carton box downwardly from the roller segments 64, the mentioned wheel hits the unfolded box behind the expiration line of the front end panel, that is, it hits the unfolded box behind the expiration line. 23 of the cartoin piece shown in Figure 1A and a projection 73 of the adjustment chain 71 hits the front end panel 22 to place it against the rear face of the adjacent projection 70. While the unfolded box is still gripped by the wheel, the rear end panel 20 is folded upwardly around its expiration line 21 by the next projection 70. By these actions, the sheet piece of Figure 1A is folded into the shape shown in figure 1B. In this configuration they fit well in the space adjacent to the projections 70, as shown in Figures 2A and 3.
Referring to Figures 2A, 3 and 4, another conveyor 74 is located between the feed conveyor 46 and the support surface 58 of the carton boxes. The conveyor 74 may take any convenient form but has been shown to comprise a series of separate plates 76 connected to endless chains 78. Coupled to the conveyor 74, at separate points along the edge of the conveyor adjacent to the movement path of the deployed carton boxes C there are separate projections of articles 80. Said projections 80 can be fixed directly to the plates 76 or said plates can be cut in said air and the projections 80 can be fixed to the structure carried by the nearest chain 78. In any case, the projections 80 are separated from each other on the conveyor 74 by a distance equal to the separation of said projections 70. In other words, the distance between the projections 80 is equal to the width of the sheet shown in the figure. 1 B. By moving the chains 72 and 78 so that their linear speeds are equal and aligning the projections 80 with the projections 70, said projections 70 and 80 have to move downwardly adjacent to each other and at the same speed.
As shown in FIGS. 2A and 4, the guides 54 extend diagonally from an upper point of the feed conveyor 46 to a location or descending point thereof. The inner guides are shown in Figure 2A ending at the remote edge of the conveyor 74, while the outer guides are shown in continuity on the support surface 58 to guide the already separated articles into the partially folded cartoin box . As shown in Figure 4, the guides 54 are separated upwardly from the support surface 58 and from the projections 70 to allow said projections 70 to pass through them. Although not shown for the sake of clarity, it will be understood that the guide segments would be supported by suitable structures such as the support structure 56 to the left of Figure 4.
The projections 80 extend towards the feed conveyor and in separation of the projections 70 over a relatively short distance, sufficient only to come into contact with the articles B of the closest alignment of the articles that move diagonally. The rear surface of the projections 80 includes an inclined face 82. The projection 80 therefore functions as a cradle that is inserted between the adjacent articles B and, in combination with the diagonal sections of the lateral guides 54 separates a group of items further down the projection 80 with respect to the items located above outgoing saying. This action is further shown in Figure 5, in which the projection 80 is shown to be in contact with adjacent bottles in the process of cradling between them. It would be understood that the dimensions of the projections 80 in the form of a cradle, the spacing between adjacent projections 80 and the dimensions of the containers B are interrelated so that the tally of the inclined face 82 keeps the containers in position to allow the point of The next cradle is attached to the containers in the appropriate location.
In operation, items such as bottles are fed into the packing machine on the feed conveyor 46 and are directed by the guides to the output conveyor 74. When the element is contacted in the form of
016 154 cot 80 with adjacent bottles, moves between them and separates them. At the moment when the bottles of the first alignment coupled by the projection 80 are displaced in a downward direction and guided towards the support surface 58, the descending movement of the projection leads them to establish contact with articles of the following article alignment, separating them in the same way and moving the group that has just been separated from articles, towards the support surface 58, so that they follow the group of articles already separated with respect to the first alignment. The same takes place with the articles of the third alignment. The group of articles of the third alignment is guided by the external guide so that the three groups of already separated articles continue to move on the support surface, as shown in the right part of Figure 2A, until they are guided towards its place as shown in figure 2B. Suitable folding devices, not shown, then complete the folding phases shown in Figures 1C and 1D, to form the finished and loaded cartoon box 42 at the downward end of Figure 2B.
Since the items are positively displaced by the conveyor 74 during its transfer from the feed conveyor belt 46 to the carton boxes on the support surface 58, there is no need to damp the feed pressure of the items as should be done. when the feeding pressure is what must push the cans on the stationary surface. Synchronizing the speed of the transfer conveyor 74 with the movement of the partially folded cartons, the transfer of the items to the cartons is smooth and without interference, thus reducing the possibility of the items falling and creating jams.
The small size of the cradle-shaped separator, particularly the distance that extends from the edge of the transfer conveyor 74 to the feed conveyor, reduces the structural needs to support the separator element 80 and minimizes the space that should be allocated to the element and its support structure to accommodate the lower branch of the conveyor 74. In addition, the use of protrusions to move partially folded cardboard pieces instead of fly bars facilitates the necessary change to produce cardboard boxes of different sizes. Thus, to pack items in cardboard boxes of different width from the one being moved, it is merely necessary to change the location of the projections to change the size of the alveoli between projections. To arrange the locations of the separating projections 80 so that they correspond to the different sizes of the aforementioned alveoli, it is a relatively simple matter due to their convenient size and the possibility of removing them and replacing them in a simple quick way.
The term "unfolded cardboard box", which is used herein, should not be understood as not being limited to a flat cartoon box in the manner it adopts at any initial or intermediate manufacturing stage, but may refer to a part laminar for a cartoon box that has been folded by adopting the configuration of the partially folded cardboard box shown in Figure 1B or in the form of a sleeve carton box, which has been opened to present the open end of the sleeve to incoming items to be packaged.
