Shaped ceramic composites and methods of making the same.

Abstract

A METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING SELF-SUPPORTING CERAMIC COMPOUND BODIES OF THE DESIRED FORM INFILTRATING A PERMEABLE PREFORM WITH A POLYCRYSTALLINE MATRIX MATERIAL THAT CONSISTS ESSENTIALLY OF AN OXIDATION REACTION PRODUCT OBTAINED BY OXIDATION WITH OPECURINAL METHOD AND OPECURATION METAL CONSTITUENTS. THE COMPOSITE BODY IS FORMED BY CONTACTING A ZONE OF A PERMEABLE PREFORM THAT HAS AT LEAST A DEFINED SURFACE LIMIT SEPARATED FROM THAT CONTACT ZONE, WITH A Fused METAL BODY THAT REACTS WITH A SUITABLE OXIDANT IN A VAPOR PHASE OXIDATION REACTION. WITHIN A CERTAIN TEMPERTURE REGION, AND OPTIONALLY WITH ONE OR MORE DOPANTS IN, OR ABOVE, THE ORIGINAL METAL OR THE PERMEABLE PREFORM MENTIONED, THE ORIGINAL METAL FOUNDED PASSES THROUGH THE OXIDATION REACTION PRODUCT PREVIOUSLY FORMED TO BE IN CONTACT OXIDIZING, MAKING THE OXIDATION REACTION PRODUCT INCREASE WITHIN THE PREFORM UP TO THE MENTIONED LIMIT OF DEFINED SURFACE INFILTRATING THE PREFORM TO THIS, AND PROVIDING THE COMPOSITE STRUCTURE WITH THE DESIRED GEOMETRY.
