Interior rearview mirror assembly with driver monitoring system

Abstract

A vehicular driver monitoring system comprises a vehicular interior rearview mirror assembly which includes a mirror head having a mirror reflective element comprising a transflective mirror reflector which transmits near infrared light incident thereon, transmits visible light incident thereon and reflects visible light incident thereon. The mirror assembly includes a driver monitoring megapixel camera and a near infrared light illuminator, which move in tandem with the mirror head. The driver monitoring megapixel camera is operable to capture frames of image data, wherein the camera views through the transflective mirror reflector. The near infrared light illuminator may be electrically operated to emit near infrared light that passes through the transflective mirror reflector. When the mirror assembly is mounted in the interior cabin of a vehicle, and the near infrared light illuminator is electrically operated to emit near infrared light, at least the eyes of the driver and at least the front passenger seat region within the interior cabin of the equipped vehicle are illuminated with near infrared light.

  1. 1
A vehicular driver monitoring system, the vehicular driver monitoring system comprising:a vehicular interior rearview mirror assembly comprising an interior rearview mirror head adjustably attached at a mounting base, the mounting base configured to mount the vehicular interior rearview mirror assembly at an interior portion of an interior cabin of a vehicle equipped with the vehicular driver monitoring system;wherein the interior rearview mirror head accommodates electronic circuitry;wherein the interior rearview mirror head accommodates a mirror reflective element;wherein the mirror reflective element has a planar front surface and a planar rear surface opposite the planar front surface, and wherein the planar front surface is closer to a driver of the equipped vehicle than the planar rear surface when the vehicular interior rearview mirror assembly is mounted at the interior portion of the interior cabin of the equipped vehicle;a driver monitoring megapixel camera accommodated by the interior rearview mirror head;wherein the driver monitoring megapixel camera is operable to capture frames of image data;wherein, with the vehicular interior rearview mirror assembly mounted at the interior portion of the interior cabin of the equipped vehicle, the driver monitoring megapixel camera views the head of the driver of the equipped vehicle and views at least a front passenger seat region within the interior cabin of the equipped vehicle;a near infrared light illuminator accommodated by the interior rearview mirror head;wherein the driver monitoring megapixel camera and the near infrared light illuminator move in tandem with the interior rearview mirror head when, with the vehicular interior rearview mirror assembly mounted at the interior portion of the interior cabin of the equipped vehicle, the interior rearview mirror head is adjusted by the driver of the equipped vehicle relative to the mounting base to set a rearward view of the mirror reflective element for the driver of the equipped vehicle;wherein the mirror reflective element comprises a transflective mirror reflective element, and wherein the transflective mirror reflective element transmits near infrared light incident thereon, transmits visible light incident thereon and reflects visible light incident thereon;wherein the driver monitoring megapixel camera views through the transflective mirror reflective element;wherein the near infrared light illuminator, when electrically operated to emit near infrared light, emits near infrared light that passes through the transflective mirror reflective element;wherein, with the vehicular interior rearview mirror assembly mounted at the interior portion of the interior cabin of the equipped vehicle and when the near infrared light illuminator is electrically operated to emit near infrared light, at least the eyes of the driver of the equipped vehicle are illuminated with near infrared light;and wherein, with the vehicular interior rearview mirror assembly mounted at the interior portion of the interior cabin of the equipped vehicle and when the near infrared light illuminator is electrically operated to emit near infrared light, at least the front passenger seat region within the interior cabin of the equipped vehicle is illuminated with near infrared light.
  2. 5
The vehicular driver monitoring system of any one of claims 3-4, wherein a duty cycle of pulsing of near infrared light emitters of the plurality of near infrared light emitters of the near infrared light illuminator relative to the reciprocal of the rate of capture by the driver monitoring megapixel camera of frames of image data (frame time) is at least 8% and is less than 40%.
  3. 6
The vehicular driver monitoring system of any one of claims 2-4, wherein the driver monitoring megapixel camera comprises an at least 2.3 megapixel imaging array, and wherein, with the vehicular interior rearview mirror assembly mounted at the interior portion of the interior cabin of the equipped vehicle, appropriate near infrared light emitters of the plurality of near infrared light emitters of the near infrared light illuminator are pulsed for respective frames of image data captured by the driver monitoring megapixel camera.
  4. 14
The vehicular driver monitoring system of any one of claims 10-13, wherein, with the vehicular interior rearview mirror assembly mounted at the interior portion of the equipped vehicle, processing at the electronics control unit (ECU) of image data captured by the driver monitoring megapixel camera recognizes the driver of the equipped vehicle via at least one selected from the group consisting of (i) face recognition and (ii) biometrics.
  5. 15
The vehicular driver monitoring system any one of claims 3-4, wherein, with the vehicular interior rearview mirror assembly mounted at the interior portion of the equipped vehicle, (i) at least one near infrared light emitter of the plurality of near infrared light emitters of the near infrared light illuminator is tilted towards the head of the driver and (ii) at least one other near infrared light emitter of the plurality of near infrared light emitters of the near infrared light illuminator is tilted away from the head of the driver.
