Systems and methods for determining an objective pressure injury score

Abstract

A system comprises: a plurality of load sensors (152a-152d) coupled to a person support apparatus (100) configured to support a person on a support surface (104) of the person support apparatus (100) and configured to sense a mobility of the person on the person support apparatus (100); at least one moisture sensor (156) configured to sense a moisture level between the person and the support surface (104); and at least one computing device (200) coupled to the plurality of sensors and the at least one moisture sensor (156). The at least one computing device (200) comprises a processor and memory storing computer readable and executable instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the computing device (200) to: receive data from the plurality of load sensors (152a-152d) coupled to the person support apparatus (100) and the at least one moisture sensor (156); calculate, using a motion assessment module (208), a mobility score indicative of a mobility of the person based on the data from the plurality of load sensors (152a-152d), the mobility score being a function of changes in magnitude of sensor inputs received by the plurality of load sensors (152a-152d) over a time interval defined for mobility monitoring; calculate a pressure injury score indicative of a likelihood that the person will develop a pressure injury by adjusting a healthcare facility baseline value based on the mobility score and the moisture level sensed by the at least one moisture sensor (156), the healthcare facility baseline value being a general baseline pressure injury value for the facility and indicative of the likelihood that a person being treated at the facility will develop a pressure injury; and provide a notification of the calculated pressure injury score.

  1. 1
A system comprising:a plurality of load sensors (152a-152d) coupled to a person support apparatus (100) configured to support a person on a support surface (104) of the person support apparatus (100) and configured to sense a mobility of the person on the person support apparatus (100);at least one moisture sensor (156) configured to sense a moisture level between the person and the support surface (104);and at least one computing device (200) coupled to the plurality of sensors and the at least one moisture sensor (156), the at least one computing device (200) comprising a processor and memory storing computer readable and executable instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the computing device (200) to: receive data from the plurality of load sensors (152a-152d) coupled to the person support apparatus (100) and the at least one moisture sensor (156);calculate, using a motion assessment module (208), a mobility score indicative of a mobility of the person based on the data from the plurality of load sensors (152a-152d), the mobility score being a function of changes in magnitude of sensor inputs received by the plurality of load sensors (152a-152d) over a time interval defined for mobility monitoring;calculate a pressure injury score indicative of a likelihood that the person will develop a pressure injury by adjusting a healthcare facility baseline value based on the mobility score and the moisture level sensed by the at least one moisture sensor (156), the healthcare facility baseline value being a general baseline pressure injury value for the facility and indicative of the likelihood that a person being treated at the facility will develop a pressure injury;and provide a notification of the calculated pressure injury score.
  2. 4
The system of any preceding claim, wherein calculating the pressure injury score comprises weighting the mobility of the person in the calculation greater than other received data.
  3. 5
The system of any preceding claim, further comprising:a monitor (158) for sensing data regarding a blood pressure or a temperature of the person;wherein the executable instructions, when executed by the processor, further cause the computing device (200) to receive the data from the monitor (158), and include the sensed blood pressure or the sensed temperature in the calculation of the pressure injury score.
  4. 6
The system of any preceding claim, further comprising an angle sensor (154) coupled to a head end (112) of the person support apparatus (100), wherein the executable instructions, when executed by the processor, further cause the computing device (200) to receive the data from the angle sensor (154) regarding a head angle of the bed.
  5. 9
The system of any one of claims 1, 7 or 8, wherein providing a notification comprises providing a recommendation for a nutrition consult for the person.
  6. 10
The system of any preceding claim, wherein the at least one moisture sensor (156) is external to the patient support apparatus (100).
  7. 12
The system of any one of claims 1 to 9, wherein the at least one moisture sensor (156) is integrated into the person support apparatus (100).
  8. 13
The system of any preceding claim, wherein the at least one moisture sensor (156) is positioned at any one or more locations along the length and width of the person support apparatus (100).
  9. 14
The system of any preceding claim, wherein the at least one moisture (156) is coupled to a moisture detection sheet.
  10. 15
The system of any preceding claim, wherein the executable instructions, when executed by the processor, further cause the computing device (200) to alter a treatment plan for the person based on the calculated pressure injury score, and wherein altering the treatment plan comprises providing a notification of the pressure injury score.
