Haptic optic management system utilizing edge rollers

Abstract

Systems, methods, and devices for inserting an intraocular lens (IOL) into an eye may be provided. In an exemplary aspect, the present disclosure is directed to a haptic optic management system. The haptic management system may include a housing that includes a bore and a cavity disposed in a first surface of the housing. The cavity may include a first end portion, a second end portion, and a central portion, wherein the cavity provides access to the bore through the first surface of the housing. The haptic management system may include arms coupled to the housing. The haptic management system may include edge rollers coupled to the housing.

  1. 1
A method for preparing an intraocular lens (110) for delivery using an insertion tool (100), comprising:rotating a pair of arms (704) such that each of the arms (704) engages a corresponding haptic extension (112) of an intraocular lens (110), thereby moving the haptic extension (112) up inclined surfaces (822) and onto an optic (114) of the intraocular lens (110);pivoting a pair of edge rollers (706) in engagement with edges (719) of the intraocular lens (110) to cause the optic (114) to fold in upon itself and move the intraocular lens (110) into alignment with a bore (800) that extends from a first end of a housing (702) to a cavity (707) formed in a first surface (806) of the housing (702) in which the intraocular lens (110) is disposed.
  2. 3
The method of any preceding claim, wherein the pivoting the pair of the edge rollers (706) comprises applying an external force to a tab (1106) that extends from each of the edge rollers (706) to cause each of the edge rollers to pivot in an arc (1200).
  3. 4
The method of any preceding claim, wherein each arm (704) of the pair of arms comprises:a first portion (710) and a second portion (712) joined at a bend (714);a pin (716) extending from the second portion (712);a protrusion (718) extending from the second portion (712), the protrusion (718) configured to engage a haptic extension (112) of the intraocular lens;and a tab (717) extending from the second portion.
  4. 6
The method of any preceding claim, wherein each edge roller (706) of the pair of edge rollers comprises a slot formed in a first surface of the edge roller for receiving an edge of the optic of the intraocular lens, a bore formed adjacent the slot, and a tab extending on a second surface opposite the first surface, wherein the tab is received in a slot formed in a sidewall of the housing.
  5. 7
An insertion tool, comprising:a drive system (102), wherein the drive system comprises a body;a plunger (104) disposed at least partially in the drive system;a nozzle (108);and a haptic optic management system (106) disposed between the drive system and the nozzle, wherein the haptic optic management system comprises: a housing comprising a bore (800) and a cavity, wherein the housing further comprises a first end portion (808) at a first end of the cavity and a second end portion (810) at a second end of the cavity, and wherein the cavity provides access to the bore (800);arms coupled to the housing (702);and edge rollers coupled to the housing (702).
  6. 10
The insertion tool of any one of claims 8 to 9, wherein the plunger is operable to engage the intraocular lens when the drive system is actuated to dispense the intraocular lens from the nozzle.
  7. 11
The insertion tool of any one of claims 7 to 10, wherein the drive system comprises a lever and a pneumatic system.
  8. 12
The insertion tool of any one of claims 7 to 11, wherein the drive system comprises an actuator mechanically connected to the plunger.
