Low overhead control channel for wireless audio systems

Abstract

A wireless audio system using low overhead in-band control and audio transmission is provided. The wireless audio system includes a first wireless audio device configured to operate separate physical layer channels for audio data and control data, and transmit the audio data and control data using a single wideband carrier. The wireless audio system also includes one or more second wireless audio devices configured to receive the audio data and control data, and execute an instruction based on the control data.

15 claims: 12 independent, 3 dependent

  1. 1
A method comprising communicating, by a wireless audio device, using a frame scheme comprising a plurality of frames, wherein each of the plurality of frames comprises a respective broadcast channel slot;sending, via a broadcast channel slot of at least one of the plurality of frames, an indication of a frame scheme parameter;encoding control data using a first modulation scheme and coding rate;and transmitting, via a control channel that is based on the frame scheme parameter, the encoded control data.
  2. 3
The method of any one of claims 1 or 2, further comprising:receiving, via a random access slot of at least one of the plurality of frames, a request for channel allocation;and sending, based on the request and via a common control channel slot, an indication of a control channel pair allocation, wherein the control channel is further based on the control channel pair allocation.
  3. 4
The method of any one of claims 1-3, wherein the control channel is further based on a quantity of control channel pairs per frame.
  4. 6
A method comprising communicating, by a wireless audio device, using a frame scheme comprising a plurality of frames, wherein each of the plurality of frames comprises a respective broadcast channel slot;receiving, via a broadcast channel slot of at least one of the plurality of frames, an indication of a frame scheme parameter;determining a control channel based on the frame scheme parameter;and receiving, via the determined control channel, encoded control data.
  5. 8
The method of any one of claims 6 or 7, further comprising:sending, via a random access slot of at least one of the plurality of frames, a request for channel allocation;and receiving, via a common control channel slot, an indication of a control channel pair allocation, wherein the determined control channel is further based on the control channel pair allocation.
  6. 9
The method of any one of claims 6-8, wherein the determining the control channel further comprises determining the control channel based on a quantity of control channel pairs per frame.
  7. 10
The method of any one of claims 6-9, wherein the frame scheme parameter indicates a number of frames N, wherein the determined control channel is repeated every N frames.
  8. 11
The method of any one of claims 1-10, wherein the encoded control data indicates one or more of:a bandwidth allocation;a battery life indication;encryption keys;or an audio playback volume.
  9. 12
The method of any one of claims 1-11, further comprising:operating separate physical layer channels for audio data and the control data;and communicating, via the separate physical layer channels and using a single wideband carrier, encoded audio data and the encoded control data.
  10. 13
A wireless audio device comprising:one or more processors;and memory storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the wireless audio device to perform the method of: any one of claims 1-5 or, when depending from claim 1, any one of claims 11 or 12, or any one of claims 6-10 or, when depending from claim 6, any one of claims 11 or 12.
  11. 14
A system comprising:a first wireless audio device configured to perform the method of any one of claims 1-5 or, when depending from claim 1, any one of claims 11 or 12;and a second wireless audio device configured to perform the method of any one of claims 6-10 or, when depending from claim 6, any one of claims 11 or 12.
  12. 15
A computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed, cause performance of the method of:any one of claims 1-5 or, when depending from claim 1, any one of claims 11 or 12, or any one of claims 6-10 or, when depending from claim 6, any one of claims 11 or 12.
