15 claims: 10 independent, 5 dependent

  1. 1
A method for treating concrete wash water with carbon dioxide comprising (i) contacting concrete wash water with carbon dioxide;(ii) determining a value for at least one characteristic of (a) a pH of the wash water, (b) a temperature of the wash water, and/or (c) a carbon dioxide content of air above the surface of the wash water;(iii) modulating the contacting of the concrete wash water with carbon dioxide based at least in part on the value determined in (ii);wherein the concrete wash water is in a holding tank and is agitated sufficiently to prevent settling of solids;and wherein a portion of wash water is removed to a location away from the holding tank to be contacted with the carbon dioxide.
  2. 3
The method of any preceding claim wherein the agitation is accomplished by pumping the wash water.
  3. 4
The method of any preceding claim wherein the value for each of the characteristics determined is compared to a predetermined range of values.
  4. 5
The method of any preceding claim further comprising determining carbon dioxide flow rate using a flow meter.
  5. 6
The method of any preceding claim wherein step (ii) further comprises determining a calculated amount of carbon dioxide to be added to the wash water.
  6. 8
The method of any previous claim wherein the wash water is produced at a concrete production facility and at least 0.1% of the carbon dioxide produced in manufacturing cement to be used at the facility, transportation emissions, other emissions associated with concrete manufacture and use, or a combination thereof, is offset by the process.
  7. 9
The method of any preceding claim wherein wash water is pulled from the tank into a recirculation loop where carbon dioxide is introduced, then released back into the tank.
  8. 12
The method of any previous claim wherein a value for pH of the wash water is determined, and an acceptable endpoint for pH of the wash water is 7.0 to 10.0.
  9. 13
The method of any preceding claim wherein the carbon dioxide treatment of the wash water produces carbonate reaction products comprising calcium carbonate, wherein at least 10% of the calcium carbonate is nano-structured calcium carbonate.
  10. 14
An apparatus for contacting concrete wash water with carbon dioxide comprising (i) a container containing concrete wash water, wherein the wash water contains solids;(ii) a system configured to agitate the wash water in the container sufficiently to prevent solids from settling;(iii) at least one of (a) a sensor configured and located to determine a pH of the wash water, (b) a sensor configured and located to determine a carbon dioxide concentration in air above the wash water, and/or (c) a sensor configured and located to determine a temperature of the wash water;(iv) a system configured to contact the wash water with carbon dioxide, wherein the system comprises (a) a source of carbon dioxide;(b) a conduit operably connected to the carbon dioxide source to transport carbon dioxide to a location where wash water is contacted with carbon dioxide, and (c) an actuator in the conduit or otherwise located to modulate the flow of carbon dioxide to be contacted with the wash water;and (v) a controller, wherein the controller is operably connected to the sensor or sensors of part (iii) and to the actuator of (iv)(c), wherein the controller receives information from the sensor or sensors and, based at least in part on the information, sends a signal to the actuator to modulate the flow of carbon dioxide.
