18 claims: 3 independent, 15 dependent

  1. 1
A method of operating an inserter, comprising:positioning a distal end of a base of the inserter on a skin surface, the inserter containing an on-body unit comprising an analyte sensor and a data processing unit, wherein the data processing unit comprises electronics housed in a sensor housing, the electronics comprising a processor, a power supply, and an analog interface for connecting to the analyte sensor;displacing the on-body unit operatively coupled to an introducer mechanism from a first position within the inserter to a second position where at least a portion of the analyte sensor of the on-body unit is in contact with an analyte under the skin surface, and further, wherein a distal surface of the on-body unit is positioned on the skin surface;and automatically retracting the introducer mechanism from the second position to a retracted position to be entirely retained within the inserter.
  2. 2
An insertion assembly, comprising:an on-body unit comprising an analyte sensor and a data processing unit, wherein the data processing unit comprises electronics housed in a sensor housing, the electronics comprising a processor, a power supply, and an analog interface for connecting to the analyte sensor;and an inserter containing the on-body unit, the inserter comprising: a base, wherein a distal end of the base is configured to be positioned on a skin surface;an introducer mechanism, wherein the on-body unit is operatively coupled to the introducer mechanism;and wherein the inserter is configured to displace the on-body unit from a first position within the inserter to a second position where at least a portion of the analyte sensor of the on-body unit is in contact with an analyte under the skin surface, and further, wherein a distal surface of the on-body unit is positioned on the skin surface;and wherein the inserter is configured to automatically retract the introducer mechanism from the second position to a retracted position to be entirely retained within the inserter.
  3. 5
The method of any of claims 1, 3 or 4 or the insertion assembly of any of claims 2 to 4, wherein the inserter comprises a handle.
  4. 6
The method of any of claims 1 or 3 to 5 or the insertion assembly of any of claims 2 to 5, further comprising, prior to positioning the distal end of the base of the inserter, disengaging an end cap from a bottom end of the handle of the inserter to expose the interior space of the inserter.
  5. 9
The method of any of claims 1 or 3 to 8 or the insertion assembly of any of claims 2 to 8, wherein the retracted position is the first position.
  6. 10
The method of any of claims 1 or 3 to 9 or the insertion assembly of any of claims 2 to 9, wherein the analyte sensor comprises a glucose sensor.
  7. 11
The method of any of claims 1 or 3 to 10 or the insertion assembly of any of claims 2 to 10, further comprising maintaining the power supply of the on-body unit in an inactive state when the on-body unit is positioned at or near the first position, and optionally further comprising activating the on-body unit when the distal surface of the on-body unit is positioned on the skin surface.
  8. 12
The method of any of claims 1 or 3 to 11 or the insertion assembly of any of claims 2 to 11, further comprising providing a bias mechanism within the hollow space of the inserter to automatically retract the introducer mechanism from the second position to the retracted position, optionally wherein the bias mechanism comprises a spring.
  9. 13
The method of any of claims 1 or 3 to 12 or the insertion assembly of any of claims 2 to 12, wherein displacing the on-body unit from the first position to the second position comprises applying a predetermined force on the inserter.
  10. 14
The method of any of claims 1 or 3 to 13 or the insertion assembly of any of claims 2 to 13, wherein the inserter comprises a driver for displacing the on-body unit from the first position to the second position.
  11. 15
The method of any of claims 1 or 3 to 14 or the insertion assembly of any of claims 2 to 14, further comprising providing one or more data associated with a monitored level of an analyte to a remote location, optionally wherein providing the one or more data comprises using one or more of RF communication, infrared communication, Bluetooth communication, Zigbee communication, 802.1x communication, or WiFi communication, further optionally wherein the remote location includes one or more of a remotely located computing device, a mobile telephone device, a personal digital assistant, or a communication enabled data processing device.
  12. 16
The method of any of claims 1 or 3 to 15 or the insertion assembly of any of claims 2 to 15, wherein the analyte sensor comprises a contact portion and an insertion portion, wherein the contact portion is oriented in a substantially horizontal configuration and is secured to a printed circuit board of the data processing unit, and the insertion portion extends in a substantially downwardly vertical orientation for placement in the skin of the subject.
  13. 17
