Decoding an encoded audio signal using drc profiles

Abstract

A method for decoding an encoded audio signal is described. The encoded audio signal comprises a sequence of frames, and is indicative of a plurality of different dynamic range control (DRC) profiles for a corresponding plurality of different rendering modes. The method comprises determining a first rendering mode from the plurality of different rendering modes; determining one or more DRC profiles from a subset of DRC profiles comprised within a current frame of the sequence of frames; determining whether at least one of the one or more DRC profiles is applicable to the first rendering mode; selecting a default DRC profile as a current DRC profile, if none of the one or more DRC profiles is applicable to the first rendering mode; wherein definition data of the default DRC profile is known at a decoder; and decoding the current frame using the current DRC profile.

  1. 1
A method (600) for decoding an encoded audio signal (102), wherein the encoded audio signal (102) comprises a sequence of frames comprising encoded audio data and metadata, the metadata including a plurality of different sets of dynamic range control, referred to as DRC, gains, wherein the encoded audio signal further comprises an indication of a loudness level of the audio signal, wherein the metadata indicates a plurality of DRC profiles for the encoded audio signal, wherein each DRC profile comprises definition data defining a range of output reference levels for which the DRC profile is applicable, and wherein each set of DRC gains corresponds to one of the plurality of DRC profiles, the method (600) comprising setting a desired output reference level; the method being characterised by further comprising:selecting a specific DRC profile for which the applicable range of output reference levels includes the desired output reference level;extracting audio data and metadata from the encoded audio signal;extracting from the metadata, and applying, the DRC gains corresponding to the selected specific DRC profile to the extracted audio data to adjust the dynamic range of the extracted audio data thereby obtaining dynamic range adjusted audio data;determining a loudness related gain based on the indication of the loudness level of the audio signal and the desired output reference level to cause a change from the loudness level of the audio data to the desired output reference level;applying the loudness related gain to the dynamic range adjusted audio data to obtain loudness adjusted audio data that has the desired output reference level;and generating output audio data elements from the loudness adjusted audio data;wherein one or more of the DRC profiles are applicable for playback in a late-night environment.
  2. 2
A decoder (100) for decoding an encoded audio signal (102), wherein the encoded audio signal (102) comprises a sequence of frames comprising encoded audio data and metadata, the metadata including a plurality of different sets of dynamic range control, referred to as DRC, gains, wherein the encoded audio signal further comprises an indication of a loudness level of the audio signal, wherein the metadata indicates a plurality of DRC profiles for the encoded audio signal, wherein each DRC profile comprises definition data defining a range of output reference levels for which the DRC profile is applicable, and wherein each set of DRC gains corresponds to one of the plurality of DRC profiles, wherein the decoder (100) is configured to set a desired output reference level; the decoder being characterised in that it is further configured to:select a specific DRC profile for which the applicable range of output reference levels includes the desired output reference level;extract audio data and metadata from the encoded audio signal;extract from the metadata, and apply, the DRC gains corresponding to the selected specific DRC profile to the extracted audio data to adjust the dynamic range of the extracted audio data thereby obtaining dynamic range adjusted data;determine a loudness related gain based on the indication of the loudness level of the audio signal and the desired output reference level to cause a change from the loudness level of the audio data to the desired output reference level;apply the loudness related gain to the dynamic range adjusted audio data to obtain loudness adjusted audio data that has the desired output reference level;and generating output audio data elements from the loudness adjusted audio data;wherein one or more of the DRC profiles are applicable for playback in a late-night environment.
