15 claims: 10 independent, 5 dependent

  1. 1
A method, comprising:transmitting one or more predefined commands from a controller unit to a transmitter unit;retrieving from a memory of the transmitter unit an identification information in response to the one or more predefined commands;transmitting the retrieved identification information to the controller unit;generating by the controller unit a communication key based on the transmitted identification information;and receiving at the transmitter unit a data packet including the communication key associated with the transmitted identification information.
  2. 2
An analyte monitoring device, comprising:an analyte sensor;a data transmission section;a data receiving section;a data processing section coupled to the data receiving section;and a memory;wherein the data receiving section is configured to receive one or more predefined commands from a controller unit;wherein the data processing section is configured to retrieve from the memory an identification information in response to the one or more predefined commands;wherein the data processing section is further configured to control the data transmission section to transmit the retrieved identification information to the controller unit in response to the one or more predefined commands;and wherein the data receiving section is further configured to receive a data packet including a communication key associated with the transmitted identification information.
  3. 6
The method or the analyte monitoring device of any preceding claim wherein the identification information includes a device identification information.
  4. 8
The method or the analyte monitoring device of any preceding claim wherein the communication key includes an 8 bit data associated with the identification information.
  5. 9
The method of any one of claims 1 or 3 to 8 including storing the communication key.
  6. 10
The analyte monitoring device of any one of claims 2 to 6 or 8, wherein the data processing section is further configured to store the communication key in the memory.
  7. 11
The method of any one of claims 1 or 3 to 9 wherein the transmitter unit is in signal communication with an analyte sensor and the analyte sensor optionally includes a glucose sensor.
  8. 12
The analyte monitoring device of any one of claims 2 to 6, 8 or 10 wherein the analyte sensor includes a glucose sensor.
  9. 13
The method of any one of claims 1, 3 to 9 or 11 including receiving one or more signals related to a monitored analyte level.
  10. 14
The analyte monitoring device of any one of claims 2 to 6, or 8, or 12 wherein the data processing section is further configured to receive one or more signals related to a monitored analyte level.
