Systems and methods for processing and transmitting sensor data

Abstract

There is provided a method of wirelessly exchanging glucose information between a first communication device associated with a continuous glucose sensor and a second communication device associated with a glucose information display device. The method includes: transmitting a first beacon using the first communication device, the first beacon comprising a first device ID; receiving the first beacon using the second communication device; determining, using the second communication device, if the first device ID transmitted by the first communication device matches a second device ID stored at the second communication device; and executing an authentication protocol, using the second communication device, if the second communication device determines that the first device ID matches the second device ID.

  1. 1
A method of wirelessly exchanging glucose information using a Bluetooth communication protocol between a first communication device associated with a continuous glucose sensor and a second communication device associated with a glucose information display device, wherein the first communication device is a sensor system comprising a sensor electronics module and the continuous glucose sensor, and wherein the method comprises:transmitting a first beacon using the first communication device, the first beacon comprising information associated with the sensor system, the first beacon being an invitation for a display device to establish a communication channel with the first communication device;receiving the first beacon using the second communication device;determining, using the second communication device, if at least some of the information associated with the sensor system matches information stored at the second communication device;executing an authentication protocol, using the second communication device, if the second communication device determines that the at least some information matches with the stored information at the second communication device;and after authentication, the first communication device periodically sending glucose data to the second communication device.
  2. 3
The method of any preceding claim, wherein to authenticate the data communication between the first communication device and the second communication device, a challenge response protocol that uses password authentication is provided, wherein the challenge is a request for a password and the valid response is the correct password.
  3. 4
The method of any preceding claim, wherein the first communication device and the second communication device perform pairing during a channel establishment process.
  4. 5
The method of any preceding claim, wherein the display device is used for alerting and providing glucose information to a user.
  5. 6
The method of any preceding claim, wherein the first communication device periodically sends the glucose data to the second communication device at predetermined time intervals.
  6. 7
The method of any preceding claim, wherein the sensor electronics module is integral with the continuous glucose sensor.
  7. 8
The method of any preceding claim, wherein the sensor electronics module includes electronics circuitry associated with measuring and processing the continuous glucose sensor data, including prospective algorithms associated with processing and calibration of the sensor data.
  8. 9
The method of any preceding claim, wherein the second communication device displays the sensor information as it is communicated from the first communication device without any additional prospective processing required for calibration and real-time display of the sensor data.
  9. 10
The method of any preceding claim, wherein the second communication device comprises software that includes display instructions to enable display of displayable sensor information thereon, wherein:the display device is programmed with the display instructions at the manufacturer;or the display device displays the displayable sensor information via a downloadable program.
  10. 11
The method of any preceding claim, wherein the display device is a mobile device.
  11. 13
The method of any preceding claim, wherein the continuous glucose sensor is a transcutaneous glucose sensor.
