Methods and apparatus to detect spillover in an audience monitoring system

Abstract

Methods and apparatus to detect spillover in an audience monitoring system are disclosed. An example method includes sampling a first audio signal from a first source received by a first microphone; sampling a second audio signal received by a second microphone from the first source, wherein the second microphone is separated from the first microphone by a first distance; calculating an origin direction of the first source based on a time difference between receipt of the first and second audio signals; when the origin direction is within a threshold angle, retaining the media associated with the first source; and when the origin direction exceeds the threshold angle, ignoring the media associated with the first source

  1. 1
An apparatus comprising:an audio sample selector (512) to select first audio samples of a first audio signal received by a first microphone (114), the first audio signal associated with media;an offset selector (518) to select first offset samples corresponding to a second audio signal received by a second microphone (116), the second audio signal associated with media, the first offset samples offset from the first audio samples by at least a first offset value;an offset analyzer (600) to count the number of times that the first offset value was determined by the offset selector (518) to determine an offset count for the first offset value;a cluster analyzer (602) to determine whether to accept the at least first offset value into a cluster, wherein for the first time that an offset is considered, the cluster analyzer (602) is configured to accept the first offset value into the cluster, and if a second offset value determined by the offset selector (518) is considered, accept the second offset value into the cluster if the second offset value is within a number of samples;a weighted averager (604) to calculate a weighted average of at least the second offset value and the first offset value in the cluster;a direction determiner to determine an origin direction of the media based on the weighted average;and a code reader (306) to, when the origin direction is within a threshold angle, monitor audio codes embedded in the media.
  2. 5
A method comprising:selecting, via at least one processor, first audio samples of a first audio signal received by a first microphone (114), the first audio signal associated with media;selecting, via the at least one processor, first offset samples corresponding to a second audio signal received by a second microphone (116), the second audio signal associated with media, the first offset samples offset from the first audio samples by at least a first offset value;determining, via the at least one processor, an offset count for the first offset value by counting the number of times that the first offset value was determined;accepting, via the at least one processor, the first offset value into a cluster when it is for the first time that an offset is considered, and, if a second offset value is considered, accepting the second offset value into the cluster if the second offset value is within a number of samples;calculating, via the at least one processor, a weighted average of at least the second offset value and the first offset value in the cluster;determining, via the at least one processor, an origin direction of the media based on the weighted average;and monitoring, via the at least one processor, audio codes embedded in the media when the origin direction is within a threshold angle.
  3. 9
A computer program that, when executed, causes at least one processor to perform the method of any one of claims 5-8.
