Wearable drug delivery device

Abstract

The present invention is concerned with a modular concept for a semi-disposable patch pump to conduct a medical therapy, where a pump unit is releasably connected to a reservoir unit by means of a bayonet connection; and a housing design to support both reliability and ease of use of said connection.

  1. 1
A patch pump (1) comprising a reservoir unit (200) and a pump unit (100), whereby the reservoir unit (200) comprises a reservoir unit housing (211), a base plate (211a), an adhesive patch assembly (280) for attaching the pump (1) to a patient (300), a reservoir (222) with a reservoir outlet (222c), a needle assembly (260) to guide the drug from the reservoir outlet (222c) into the body of the patient (300), and an inserter assembly (250) to insert a portion of the needle assembly (260) into the body of the patient (300) using energy stored in the reservoir unit (200) and/or the pump unit (100);the reservoir outlet (222c) is in fluid-tight connection with the needle assembly (260);the reservoir (222) is in fluid-tight connection with a pump mechanism to move the drug out of the reservoir (222);the base plate (211a) is mounted on the adhesive patch assembly (280);the pump unit (100) comprises a pump unit housing, an electrical power source, a drive unit with a pump driving means to drive the pump mechanism, and a control unit;the pump unit (100) is configured to be releasably attachable to the reservoir unit (200);characterised in that the mechanical interface between the pump unit (100) and the reservoir unit (200) comprises a bayonet connection (212a) with a rotation axis (212b) defining an opening side (114) on the patch pump (1), where the pump unit (100) is lifted away from the base plate (211a) to open the bayonet connection (212a).
  2. 3
A patch pump (1) according to claims 1 or 2, where the base plate (211a) extends from the bottom of the reservoir unit housing between the opening side (114) and the rotation axis (212b) of the bayonet connection (212a) in the direction of the pump unit (100) to prevent unintended detaching.
  3. 4
A patch pump (1) according to any of the preceding claims, where the base plate (211a) comprises a cut-out (211m) to allow easy detaching of the pump unit (100), the length of the cut-out along the edge of the base plate being in the range of 5 mm to 30 mm, preferably 15 mm to 25 mm, the width of the cut-out (211m) being in the range of 1 mm to 10 mm, preferably 3 mm to 5 mm.
  4. 5
A patch pump (1) according to any of the preceding claims, where the locking mechanism (113) includes a latch operated by the movement of opening or closing the connection, such as a locking spring (113a) interacting with a locking structure (212d).
  5. 6
A patch pump (1) according to any of the preceding claims, where the energy driving the auto-inserting mechanism such as the inserter assembly (250) is a mechanical energy, for example a mechanically expandable or shrinkable component, preferably a pre-loaded insertion spring (252).
  6. 7
A patch pump (1) according to any of the preceding claims, where the energy driving the auto-inserting mechanism such as the inserter assembly (250) is an electric energy, for example the rechargeable battery (150) integrated in the pump unit (100) or a further battery like the battery (244) integrated in the reservoir unit.
  7. 8
A patch pump (1) according to any of the preceding claims, where the pump mechanism comprises a plunger (221).
  8. 9
A patch pump (1) according to any of the preceding claims, where the pump driving means comprises a threaded rod (125).
