Method and apparatus for passing suture through tissue

Abstract

A suture passer comprising: a hollow tube, the hollow tube comprising a distal end, a proximal end, and a lumen extending from the distal end to the proximal end; and a clamping rod slidably received in the lumen of the hollow tube, the clamping rod comprising a distal end and a proximal end, the distal end being bifurcated into a first arm and a second arm, one of the first and second arms extending distally of the other of the first and second arms and including a clamping surface; wherein at least one of the first arm and the second arm comprises a friction-enhancing surface for facilitating manipulation of a suture via engagement of the suture with the friction-enhancing surface.

  1. 1
A suture passer (5, 205) comprising:a hollow tube (10, 210), the hollow tube (10, 210) comprising a distal end (20, 220), a proximal end (25, 230) and a lumen (30, 240) extending from the distal end (20, 220) to the proximal end (25, 230);and a clamping rod (15, 215) slidably disposed in the lumen (30, 240) of the hollow tube (10, 210), the clamping rod (15, 215) comprising a distal end (50, 265) and a proximal end (55, 270), the distal end (50, 265) being bifurcated into a first arm (60, 275) and a second arm (65, 280), the first arm (60, 275) including a clamping surface (47, 285), and the second arm (65, 280) being outwardly biased such that when the clamping rod (15, 215) is moved distally, the distal end of the second arm (65, 280) extends laterally of the hollow tube (10, 210);wherein the hollow tube (10, 210) comprises a cutaway (245) formed at the distal end (20, 220) of the hollow tube (10, 210), the cutaway (245) communicating with the lumen (30, 240), wherein the cutaway (245) is formed by a pair of longitudinally-extending edges (250) having distal ends and proximal ends, wherein the pair of longitudinally-extending edges (250) terminate at a circumferentially-extending edge (255) at the proximal ends of the longitudinally-extending edges (250).
  2. 5
A suture passer according to any of claims 1-4, wherein the first arm and the second arm are both outwardly biased.
  3. 6
A suture passer according to any of claims 1-5, wherein the distal end of the tube terminates in a sharp point (225).
  4. 7
A suture passer according to any of claims 1-6, wherein the distal end of the first arm is distal of the distal end of the second arm.
  5. 8
A suture passer according to any of claims 1-7, wherein a gap (G) is provided between the distal end of the second arm and the clamping surface.
  6. 9
A suture passer (5, 205) according to any of claims 1-8, wherein the circumferentially-extending edge (255) comprises a pair of diametrically-opposed, longitudinally-extending recesses (260) sized to receive a suture (S) therein.
  7. 10
A suture passer (5, 205) according to any of claims 1-9, wherein, when the clamping rod (15, 215) is pulled proximally, a suture (S) engaging the clamping surface (47, 285) is pulled proximally against the circumferentially-extending edge (255) of the cutaway (245).
  8. 12
A suture passer (5, 205) according to any of claims 1-11, wherein a distal end of the first arm is ramped.
