Directional radio beam information in a mobile communications system

Abstract

The present invention provides a method performed by a user equipment of providing information to a first base station relating to directional beam signals received by the user equipment from one or more other base stations and optionally the first base station, the method comprising receiving with signals transmitted from a base station via a directional beam an identifier, the identifier having a property of distinguishing the directional beam from other directional beams; and transmitting to the first base station a report including information about the received identifier of the directional beam, characterized in that the received identifier is encoded in the signals transmitted by the base station at a physical layer, the physical layer being the lowest layer for communication between the base station and the user equipment according to a multi-layer model known as the open systems interconnection, OSI, model.

8 claims: 3 independent, 5 dependent

  1. 1
A method to determine a location of a user equipment, UE, device in a mobile communication system in which an infrastructure node utilizes directional beam signals for the exchange of data between the infrastructure node and the UE device, the method comprising:- transmitting lobe direction specific information (LDI) according to a predetermined configuration using at least one directional beam signal;- detecting the lobe direction specific information;- reporting the detected lobe direction specific information either in part or in its entirety back to the transmitter;and - using the reported information to determine the location of the UE device.
  2. 3
The method according to claims 1 or 2, wherein the lobe direction specific information is provided at a physical layer, the physical layer being the lowest layer for communication between the first entity and the second entity according to a multi-layer model known as the open systems interconnection, OSI, model.
  3. 4
The method according to any of claims 1 to 3, wherein the lobe direction specific information is part of designated positioning reference signals that are interspersed in a time/frequency resource grid of the physical layer.
